[Drama Review] 'She Was Pretty' - Episode 12

Siwon, Hwang Jung Eum, Park Seo Joon, Go Jun Hee
The 12th episode of 'She Was Pretty' left me so very incredibly dejected. It's great and all that Sung Joon finally got to reunite with his childhood first love (yippee ki yay) but what about satisfying my secondary lead syndrome?? What about 'Jjacksen' and Shin Hyuk?? Call me biased, I don't care. Shin Hyuk is the way better man for Hye Jin than Sung Joon will ever be, and the events in this episode prove just so.

Ha Ri isn't gone like Hye Jin believed her to be, at least not in the literal sense. The old Ha Ri, however, is gone, as the girl goes through something of a mid-life crisis...in her twenties. A bit early for one of those, but change isn't always for the worst. In fact, it should be embraced, especially for self-improvement! And thus, Ha Ri embarks on a remarkably humbling journey towards a sort of nirvana in which she will feel pain no longer from her desire for things she shouldn't be lusting after in the first place. It's a step in the right direction; she is starting anew, building a life for herself from scratch and letting go of all the things that never really belonged to her.

Ooohhhh gurl are these Dolce & Gabbana shoes

The sparkling pair of heels that Ha Ri gifts Hye Jin with is the prime example of Ha Ri 'letting go.' They symbolize Ha Ri's path towards redemption, a token of recompense for her deceit towards the two people she cared about the most in her life. For Hye Jin, the shoes signify her path towards Sung Joon. Though she never needed permission from Ha Ri, she can go to Sung Joon with a peace of mind knowing that she won't be emotionally scarring her 'wifey' in the process. I was still immensely frustrated with Hye Jin in this episode because she just refused to make Ha Ri's attempt at redemption any easier! Hye Jin's idea of being considerate towards the people she loves is ironically having the opposite effect. By feeling continuously feeling guilty about developing her love with Sung Joon, she unknowingly perpetuates Ha Ri's own guilt. What's worse, she is also hurting Sung Joon, who has waited practically all his life for her. If you're going to be so wishy-washy about your feelings, a little warning would be nice...?

Run, run like the wind after your love!

The only person being upfront about his feelings is the not-so-idiotic, 'idiot editor' Shin Hyuk, who made his feelings for Jjacksen clear as day early on. He was there for Hye Jin through thick and thin, even after he ascertained that Hye Jin only harbors romantic feelings for Sung Joon and Sung Joon alone. Unlike Ha Ri, however, who bottled up her emotions, Shin Hyuk ran away from them. Or maybe he just needed some time to sort things out and figure out what he truly wants, which of course, is Hye Jin. As he said at least gajillion times in the episode, "It ain't over until it's over!" which....is kind of a useless argument that goes in circles, but hey, if that's the kind of cheap bromide that gives Shin Hyuk motivation in the love game, then so be it.

derpity derp derp derp, who's the derpiest of them all??

It was almost painful to watch how Shin Hyuk kept getting subtly rejected by Hye Jin throughout the episode. In the one scene at a cafe where Hye Jin is trying to find the best way to reject him, Shin Hyuk deftly rejects her...rejection. It's a reject-ception. Or reverse confession..? In any case, my heart gave out to poor Shin Hyuk who keeps trying even though deep down he knows Hye Jin only has eyes for Sung Joon. The decisive moment of when Shin Hyuk has to also let go of what he can't have arrives at the very end of the episode. As always, Shin Hyuk makes his bet on the flip of a coin, telling Hye Jin that if heads, he will let her go wordlessly and if tails, he will hang onto her. Though he tells Hye Jin heads, we find out later that the result is actually tails.

Girl, did anyone tell you that you're a teeeeeeeny bit frustrating?

DARGGGGHHHHHH. So now we have a total of two casualties in this ruthless match of love and war. What's even more damning is the fact that Hye Jin thinks she's the one sparing everyone's feelings by tip-toeing around her own emotions and just dilly dallying. But she just ends up hurting everyone around her!

How I feel while watching this drama. Alone. Because alim17 has abandoned me and this show.

The best part of this episode was Siwon's abs.
