CNN says North Korean girl group 'Moranbong' took inspiration from Girls' Generation

Girls

K-pop fans noticed a recent news report by CNN about North Korea actually featured the immensely popular South Korean girl group Girls' Generation!

The news segment by Kyung Lah was about how North Korea's young dictator Kim Jong Un is attempting to make himself and his country more modern, which is a big change from his father's approach. One of the changes is the North Korean girl group Moranbong (The Moranbong Band), who debuted in 2012 as North Korea's first all-female band.

Girls' Generation appeared in this news segment when the CNN reporter noted Moranbong's stage outfits looked very similar to Girls' Generation's "Genie" concept back in 2009.

She said, "The ladies of Moranbong... clearly got some ideas from their enemy on the other side of the DMZ... South Korea's K-pop bands," as footage of Girls' Generation's "Genie" MV as well as their song played on screen.
