[K-indie Spotlight] Indie artists of July

misc.

Welcome to our new series 'K-indie Spotlight' where we will be introducing various Korean independent artists in Korea each month! This gives a chance for our niche readers who are not just into the K-Pop scene, but also those who are interested in discovering the huge diversity of music in South Korea to add on to their playlists.

With the help from 'Onstage [K],' a Korean indie music program that introduces the authentic beauty of Korean contemporary music to the world, we hope to be adding diversity and possibly enlightening our readers with the Korean music scene that has not yet been touched on.

Check out the first round of K-indie artists for this month below!

SAZA Band

Formed by Choi Woo Joon, the former guitarists of the band Winterplay, SAZA Band depicts the joy and sorrow of life through blues music. They are known to touch everyone's heart with their wild, fierce, yet sensual sounds. They were the 8th guest of 'Onstage [K].'

The name 'SAZA' ('Lion' in Korean) was created due to Choi Woo Joon's hairstyle identical to a lion's mane. The band consists of Jung Young Joon on bass, Lee Do Heon on drums, and Kim Jung Kyun on percussions.

Chaboom

The Chaboom we're going introducing isn't the Korean football legend Cha Bum Kun (aka Cha Boom), but an underground hip-hop rapper who is looking to tell his side of the story in the vast industry of Korean hip-hop. Inspired by the city where he grew up, Ansan, Chaboom combines his trademark rough and unfiltered lyrics with a typical Korean flow, carrying on the spirit of Korean hip-hop.

Chaboom released his first full-length album, 'Original,' in 2014 and was highly praised for his ability to realistically depict the stories of modern- day youths as well as Korean society.

Kim Ju Hwan

Dreaming of becoming the Tony Bennett of Korea, Kim Ju Hwan is Korea's premier jazz vocalist who talks about beauty and quintessence of jazz through his unique sounds. To local Korean jazz lovers, Kim Ju Hwan is known to enrich the ears and souls with his signature soft yet striking high-pitched vocals.

Kim Ju Hwan's first album, 'My Favorite Things,' was released in 2012, and has been nourishing our soul with his jazz standards since.

Earthbound

Three member band, Earthbound, is one of the hottest groups in the Korean indie scene despite their recent first full-length album, "Hangover," released in May of this year. This young talented trio talks about their journey as musicians while delightfully surprising the listener with their sound.

Earthbound is comprised of Kim Kak Sung on vocals and guitar, Kim Young on bass, and Park Sung Kook on drums. With their roots in rock and blues, their music is intertwined with variety of styles and genres.
