[Drama Review] 'Scholar Who Walks the Night' - Episode 2

The second episode of 'Scholar Who Walks the Night (SWWTN),' though not as eventful as the first, still held my interest with the introduction of new characters and plot twists. Who are those character and plot twists you ask? Well, read on to find out!

Kim Sung Yeol (referred to as SY) desperately searches for the records left by the long dead Crown Prince Junghyun (CPJ), which allegedly contains the crucial information that could rid of Gwi once and for all. SY has an inkling of where he may obtain this information, as he shares with his close confidants what he has discovered in his search. There is an author who goes by the name of 'Lustful Student,' who wrote a book in which the main character's name is Hoyool. SY is one of the few people who knows that 'Lustful Student' was the nom de plume of the late CPJ, and he also knows that 'Hoyool' was CPJ's childhood nickname. This strikes SY as strange because any trace of CPJ's existence was completely obliterated 120 years ago, save for the one in SY's memory. Hence, SY believes that this fake 'Lustful Student' may either know that CPJ existed or that he holds CPJ's records. �

SY is on the receiving end of a one-sided love by a fatally attractive courtesan named Soo Hyang (played by Jang Hee Jin and referred to as SH), and she confesses that if he 'turns' her, she will stay by his side forever. However, SY firmly rejects SH's advances, making it clear that an accursed life is not the life she would want. He tells her, "My heart is human but my body longs for the blood of humans," displaying deep remorse for all the people he had to kill for blood so he could stay alive. Besides, he is still in love with Myung Hee, his adopted sister who sacrificed her life for him 120 years ago. At this point, I don't know if I should praise or pity the man for not being able to move on. Hopefully Yang Sun (YS) changes his heart?

Changmin triumphant over his dashing new facial hair

Crown Prince Lee Yoon (played by Changmin and referred to as CPY in this review), has his eyes on YS as he believes that YS is his lost childhood friend named Seo Jin from ten years ago. However, YS doesn't seem to be catching on to the clues CPY drops whenever he encounters or maybe she is purposefully not acknowledging that she knows him. It's not clear whether CPY is right in his guess that YS is indeed his lost bud since Seo Jin is revealed to be a male in a flashback scene. That means YS dressed as a man all her life or CPY has the wrong guy (gal). Guess we'll have to wait to find out who exactly is Seo Jin and why he is so important to CPY.

Hey there lil mama let me whisper in yo ear

A nameless rebel distributes flyers all over the city claiming that he will find out the truth about Crown Prince Sadong's (CPS) death. CPS was Lee Yoon's father who died for committing 'treason' when in fact he was murdered by Gwi for defying him. King Hyunjo, who is CPS's father, had no choice but to sacrifice his own son to Gwi and cover up what really happened to his grandson Lee Yoon by lying that CPS was punished for 'treason.' Till this day, CPS is forced to live under cover for being the son of a 'duplicitous traitor.'

Gwi turns a young girl into one of his minions but for what purpose and to what end is not revealed. The young girl preys on YS as she's traveling alone through the dark forest at night. YS tries to run away but the newly-turned vampire catches up with no effort and hurls YS at a tree, leaving her with a grave head injury. As if by beck and call, SY appears to save YS and easily overpowers the young vampire. We then find out why Gwi has set the girl loose; it was to lure SY out from hiding DUN DUN DUN.

Will there be an epic vampire battle between the SY and Gwi in the next episode? That would be pretty awesome.�
