HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODES 9 & 10

"Have you seen the phone bill? How many times a month do you call the psychic line anyway?"

The news has been leaked to the press: Joon Ki, an ordinary joe, is dating a chaebol's daughter. Ji Yi quits her job to prepare for her new job under Yoon Ha. Hye Soo threatens to ruin her husband. Yoon Ha finally figures out what the mysterious key is for and finds a lockbox in her brother's safe containing an SD card with damning evidence against Taejin. Chang Soo's mother tries to pry Ji Yi and Chang Soo apart, even withholding stocks from her son and letting Ji Yi know that Chang Soo could lose everything he owns merely by dating her.

Yoon Ha shows Joon Ki her intended office at Taejin and shares a kiss with him. Chang Soo continues to do sweet things for and with Ji Yi, which reassures her for a while at least. The next morning, Won Sik cries while eating, reminiscing about his only son. Both Yoon Ha and Chang Soo are told by their respective mothers to break up with the people they love. Ye Won continues to plot and scheme, telling her mother she needs to break up with dad, airing concerns (to Yoon Ha) that our heroine would not be a good fit with the company and trying to dig up dirt on Joon Ki

During a morning bicycle race the next day, Joon Ki reveals everything to Chang Soo; how he used the chaebol to get a leg up, and how he feels Chang Soo's elitism limits him. Ji Yi tries to break up with Chang Soo (scary mom), but they agree to not break up because it's raining. Joon Ki's mother confronts Yoon Ha about her chaebol heritage and says that Joon Ki has a pic of her from when she was a child. She looks at the pic and a piece of her jewelry is with it. She goes white, excuses herself, and waits for Joon Ki. He has some explaining to do...

"I could totally tell you how to steal that, if you really want it..."

Kyung Joon has (okay, had) some information on Taejin. I'm not sure I entirely understood it, but there's a couple files on there that seem to indicate lawsuits. Ye Won, when pressed about it, brushes Yoon Ha off. But there's some funny things about his death. One, they couldn't find a body. Two, the family seems to indicate that he's dead, then they backtrack. To make themselves feel better or perhaps they know he's not really dead? If he knows company secrets that are better left un-researched, then could he have been killed for what he knows? Killed by Taejin? Maybe? They also bring up a company that they had dealings with that went sour and they've brought it up two or three times in flashbacks. Kyung Joon was told to harden his heart and cut ties with them. Did someone kill him out of revenge?

Joon Ki seems to be shady. Every time I get comfortable with him, he pulls something else. And it's not like he's being sly about it; everything is done in plain sight, but it's still irritating. I just remember he played a pretty great guy in 'I Need Romance 3,' so maybe I'm riffing off that. He just seemed to be a decent guy. A little reserved, maybe, but still in love with Yoon Ha. It seems, though, they keep trying to make him not nice, even as his natural easiness comes out through the lines and softens the blow, even when he admits his motives are less than pure. Now that he's had his heart-to-heart with Chang Soo, maybe they can possibly continue the bromance they had. Maybe? Possibly? The passive-aggressive war is starting to get annoying.

A word to the wise: never exercise in your C-3PO cosplay costume.

Chang Soo's mom has now officially hit evil drama mama status. At least they dropped hints before they dropped the bomb. She meets with Ji Yi not once but twice and tells her to cut ties. She threatens Chang Soo, too, who seems to continue to defy her. This can't end well unless his connections can shield him from her influence. I like how the actress just embodies bipolar. The woman could easily be mistaken for Chang Soo's older sister (if he had one) and she acts young sometimes. But when she scowls, she oozes evil, and it puts about 10-15 years on her. It's kind of a shocking transformation.

"I never noticed before, but she has some serious flakes..."

Again, we seem to be hitting makjang territory, at least judging from the preview. Yoon Ha now appears to be flipping out, flashing UEE's signature deer-in-the-headlights look as she gazes into a foggy mirror, saying, "My dream is to crush you." Uhh, yeah...180 turnaround from who you were before. In the teaser, we see all sorts of things that warn me not to watch, but I can't quite avert my eyes from the train wreck yet. Why? I want to know how in the hell we got to this point.

How about you guys?
