HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 14

"I thought I saw a face in here. Let me take a closer look..."

Seeing Yoon Ha and Chang Soo in the beginning stages of mortal liplock, Joon Ki steers Ji Yi out of the restaurant. Chang Soo and our heroine can't get past the fact that she's more a dongsaeng than a hot chica to him (she probably doesn't hear that very often in real life!). They talk, and Chang Soo reveals that Joon Ki really did love her.Joon Ki and Ji Yi decide not to meet with Yoon Ha, because they don't want to interact with their ex-lovers.

Joon Ki dines with his mother, who counsels him about Chang Soo and Yoon Ha. As he goes back to work, he bumps into Yoon Ha, and they talk about how Chang Soo is still in love with Ji Yi. Speaking of Ji Yi, that girl makes her way home and cries. Later, Chang Soo stumbles drunkenly into his house and goes wild. When his mother confronts him, he tells her it's too hard, that he doesn't want to live, and that he loves Ji Yi. Joon Ki and Yoon Ha make some inroads being decent to each other.

The next morning, Yoon Ha's family gets some unsettling news -- Kyung Joon could still be alive. Not only that, he may have faked his death. The mistress refuses an offer from Yoon Ha's mother to move to the U.S., figuring that she can get a better offer if she sticks around. When they get proof positive that Kyung Joon is still alive and has several residences around SE Asia, Won Sik gets upset and collapses again...

"I remember when you used to be that tall."

So, given that we're close to the end of the series, I wonder if this is is it for Won Sik. He hadn't really learned his lesson and wasn't really interested in giving up his mistress, but at least he treated his wife a tad bit better. I was hoping that he would undergo a change of heart (figuratively speaking), realize that life is really worth living, and not everything can be expressed in won or stock portfolios. I'm guessing now we'll get a death scene, where he's in the hospital and the doc says there's nothing they can do. It's too bad, really. I started to feel for the guy when he wept for his son.

It takes a strong man to ascend the throne.

I hadn't realized how bent out of shape Chang Soo was, but this episode really pulled out his heart and showed it to us. He drinks himself silly twice this episode, all over Ji Yi. He's got it bad, just like she does, and I think both of them (if they can actually stop avoiding each other) could get together and make things work. They were good together. The thing that worries me is that despite Chang Soo's obvious heartache, his mother hasn't given her blessing. That concerns me because she could do all sorts of things to make sure Ji Yi never comes back into Chang Soo's life.

She throws her own parties, complete with confetti

This episode actually jerked at my tear ducts. While I'm vaguely interested in Yoon Ha getting back together with Joon Ki, I was moved by Hyungsik's performance as Chang Soo. His sobbing here seemed fairly real, and he just kind of threw himself into it. There was no wiping his eyes or a little sniffing, there were some serious tears. Whether they were real or not, well, I'm not going into that. His face was a mask of pain, and it was heartrending.

This installment was a lot busier than normal. And rather than focusing on schemes or plots, it really focused more on emotions. People talking with other people ancillary to the ones they love, getting pieces of information, trying to figure out whether they can trust the other person, whether the other person loves them, and what they should do. This was so much better than normal. Now I can't wait for the last two episodes.
