NINE MUSES - 'SPECIAL SUMMER EDITION'

Track List:

1. MUSE
2. Hurt Locker
3. A Guy Like You
4. Fancy
5. Yes or No

Having scored some pretty big hits in the past (think "Ticket" and "Wild,") these lovely ladies join the summer slam with their '9Muses S/S Edition,' six fresh tracks (well, okay, five and an instrumental) to make your summer even more fun.

"MUSE," the intro track, features a wash of synths with the chorus to "Hurt Locker" mixed in. It's nothing amazing, but it's serviceable and blends in nicely.

The title track is "Hurt Locker," characterized by strong beats and high-tempo frenetic vocals -- at least in the beginning. A soaring bridge and sweeping chorus make this is a seriously awesome jam. Love Euarin's raps here. The title is fairly appropriate, even if they didn't seem to understand it. "Hurt Locker" is military argot for being in pain for a prolonged period, which is pretty much what happens during a breakup, and this song embodies that well.

"A Guy Like You" reminds me of "Ticket," but even better. It was co-written by Euaerin, which is freakin'daebak. Horns, guitar, and a futuristic synth whining and bouncing really make this track work. And, of course, Euearin's rapping, which has always been on point. The girls are complaining about a guy they like.

"Fancy" is a swingy, pretty piece of pop. Aside from being a memorably, hooky track with contributions by Euaerin, they actually use the word cleverly in the myriad ways it can be used: "I want a fancy tonight," "you are so fancy," "I fancy you." Which is nice to hear, after all the head-desking fails that pepper K-pop.

The girls ask their whether they're dating or not on "Yes or No." The buttery-smooth croons work well here, and with a peppy, throwback feel, a sweet, simple, sweet pop confection that makes this a perfect close to a sweet collection of tracks.

Truthfully, after "Drama," which I found bland, I was worried. I didn't need to be. The girls show chemistry with the new lineup, each girl given a part which she kills, and the songs are sweet and hooky. Put this EP out with the sun tea or the lift tickets (depending on the weather). If you're a Nine Muses fan, this is the one you've been waiting for.

MV REVIEW

It probably helps that I like the song (and the group, though I'm not biased), but the video was pretty enjoyable.

There was a lot to take in, including Kyungri and Euaerin (remember, I'm not biased) and the girls were zooming and dancing around a working dock, boxed in by shipping containers, which is vaguely appropriate given the term "locker." But these containers were more brightly colored (and in better shape) than I've ever seen them.

Still the dance sequences were pretty cool. And because the video was largely plotless, there were quite a few of them. Those girls must have been exhausted by the time they were done, but it still made for a fun show.

The concept was sexy surfer girl, and the costumes were quite appropriate. I give more of a pass to skimpy clothing during the summer (okay, maybe a little biased). What else are they gonna wear? Winter coats? They did one of the things I was hoping for, too, which was roller skate. I was hoping for some shredding with the skateboard Hyuna was holding, but alas, that was probably a pipe dream.

But with all the vrooming around and the roller skating (not to mention dancing on top of a stack of containers), I wonder if any idols were harmed during the making of this video. Okay, I'm biased. I like the group. Sue me. :)
