[Album and MV Review] Big Bang - 'D'

BIG BANG - 'MADE (D)'

Tracklist:
1. If You
2. Sober

July is here, and with the new month, as promised, Big Bang has dropped the latest in their series of singles, 'D.' G-Dragon, T.O.P., and company also have released yet another madcap MV to go with it.

The first track is "If You," a much slower, more reflective Big Bang than we've seen previously. Much more acoustic than the typical EDM/hip-hop that the boys are famous for, the piece is emotionally sung over a strummed guitar. Billowy vocals masterfully define the pain of a breakup in this stripped down, stirring tune.

Last but certainly not least is "Sober," which is in a style that we're more used to from Big Bang, with heavy drums and the blaring synths and electric guitar. The title "Sober" is pure irony, as it's obvious from the song that, in the middle of splitsville, the boys want to be anything but. Melodic, in-your-face, and delivered with their usual aplomb, it's not hard to guess that this will dominate the charts as well.

MV REVIEW

This summer, the band has given us videos that are wild and crazy. "Sober" is no exception.

The vignettes are bizarre, although probably less so if you view it through the lens of controlled substances. An army of G-Dragons are going nuts in field littered with beds, Taeyang's in a shower in the midst of a forest, T.O.P. shifts from room with hobby horse to field with a goat before flipping a car with a mere gesture. Not to mention the weird room where gravity has been warped.

The costumes are classic Big Bang. Never ones to take themselves seriously, at times they are clad in ensembles and hairstyles that would make Lady Gaga blink more than once.  Leave it to my screenshots to disprove that line. Watch the MV and see for yourself!

Of course, one notable thing is that there's no synchronized dancing. Whenever dancing is called for, it looks like they're at the whims of a spastic marionette, who might also be less than lucid.

"Sober" is a visual treat, vibrant and exciting. Video of the year? Perhaps. Hilarious and fun? You bet.
