[Single and MV Reviews] Big Bang - 'Bang Bang Bang,' 'We Like 2 Party'

Big Bang, T.O.P, Taeyang, G-Dragon, Daesung, Seungri

Big Bang - 'Bang Bang Bang & We Like 2 Party'

It is without a doubt that Big Bang's "Bang Bang Bang" is one of the most hype rave-style tracks that recently dropped. It is an anthemic party jam that is actually more of a party song than "We Like 2 Party." "Bang Bang Bang" is more of the 'party-hardy' song what with its pulsating, eardrum-tingling synths and a grainy bass. Now this is the song to blast at a club or any other rowdy social function.

SINGLE REVIEW: "BANG BANG BANG"

The distorted beat that drives the overall momentum of the track layered on top with loud claps and chantings are reminiscent of old school hip hop, a genre that G-Dragon loves to revisit. Then, with a reverse reverb, the song starts off with Taeyang's strong vocals and busy squeaky synth rhythm. Taeyang, who undoubtedly has one of the best R&B and Hip hop vocals in K-Pop, has the voice that fits best with all Big Bang songs next to T.O.P and G-Dragon. It makes complete sense that he is the one to open up the song. Trap rolls are added in as T.O.P spits his carefully crafted rap lines all the while continuing to amp up the momentum, building up to a climax.

As always, G-Dragon trolls us by stomping on the momentum that they've worked so hard to build up with a contrasting, laid back, low bass rhythm. When that sick beat drops around the 1:00 mark, you can't help but think, "What happened to the song I was listening to?" Not to worry though, as Daesung picks up the main melody again at 1:30. The way the song is structured doesn't make much sense, but not a lot of things that G-Dragon does make sense and I'd say that it gives him another edge as an artist. The rest of the song is smooth sailing or so you believe until the song screeches to a halt yet again around the 2:42 mark and revs up again with what sounds like another song altogether. All these sudden unexpected twists will probably make your head jerk every which way, almost like a Wild Mouse roller coaster ride.

aw yeah.

MV REVIEW: "BANG BANG BANG"

The MV's production and cinematography are flawless as usual as is expected from a big name label like YG. Everything about the video is bombastic, over the top, and in-your-face from Taeyang with all his muscular, oiled minions; T.O.P cosplaying as both an astronaut and a cowboy (in reference to Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'); GD as equal parts a slave and a master;Seungri with his zombie dancers; and Daesung as a playboy night club owner(?) to the fire-spitting flamethrowers. My favorite part would probably have to be when GD makes his appearance with ReQuest Dance Crew's lead choreographer Parris Goebel. Enveloped in bright red and black from head to toe, GD is the very imagery of the devil himself, emerging from the depths of hell with his hound. I have to say, I was more captivated by the hound than her master.

Here comes the devil himself.

I couldn't help but take notice of some of the ridiculous props some of the members were donning, especially T.O.P's tall furry hat. Yes, T.O.P has the right to try any look he so desires, and yes, that prop was added for grandiose effect, but he just ends up looking absurd. Even when they're dressed up as outlaws on motorcycles, T.O.P. refuses to surrender his fluffy friend. That scene also could have done without Seungri's headdress; a biker wearing tall fluffy hats and Native-American-inspired headdresses are rare if not completely unheard of.

SINGLE REVIEW: "WE LIKE 2 PARTY"

"We Like 2 Party" is the second song released in the 'A' series, and it is the ultimate 'feel good' song. The title is a bit misleading since "We Like 2 Party" is much slower and steadier than the erratic "Bang Bang Bang," soothing to listen to rather than alarming, with simple, straightforward guitar chords. The beat in the background lends the song the slightest hint of a hip-hop vibe, which didn't come as much of a surprise since Big Bang always return to their hip hop roots. However, the beat, along with the drums, are not the focal point of this laid back track. The guitar is what takes front and center, and its thrumming chords drape over most other elements of the song. That is not to say the song is bad, but it isn't a very powerful song either.

MV REVIEW: "WE LIKE 2 PARTY"

The MV is also a 'feel good' kind of video to match the song. There isn't really much to discuss since the entirety of the video is spent watching the Big Bang members goof about and engage in random horseplay. The most satisfying part was getting to watch the Big Bang members out about in public, just having fun and interacting with their fans. I couldn't help but smile at all their silliness, especially near the end when all of them plunged into a pool (Oh, T.O.P, will you ever take off that shirt?).

If I had to choose, I would still prefer "Bang Bang Bang" over "We Like 2 Party" because "Bang Bang Bang," though lacking a clear identity, is still more potent and ingeniously clamorous. Many of you probably disagree because the chorus is so...unfitting and possibly even grating to your aural receptacles. But as a listener with unorthodox tastes, I was immediately intrigued by the unorthodox composition. GD may not be an iconoclast but he is a pop icon who was never afraid to push boundaries and "Bang Bang Bang" shows that he pushed with all his might. Because of this, I'm always looking forward to his next work, whether it be with Big Bang or as just G-Dragon. Let's just see what the following chapter, 'D,' will offer.

  1. Big Bang
  2. T.O.P
