HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 6

"Don't worry, I'm studying magic. It was either this rose or a rabbit, but the rabbit kept pooping in my pocket."

Okay, this episode had some of those grand reveals, except, um, they weren't that grand:

That morning, Yoon Ha's dad confronts his wife about her behavior. Later, at Joon Ki's house, Yoon Ha makes breakfast for the both of them. Ye Won meets with her family to discuss her impending divorce and her intent to move in. She battles her mother over using Gyung Joon's house on the property, but her mom finally capitulates. Chang Soo asks Ji Yi out, and Chang Soo's brother calls her before the carpet. He makes her feel uncomfortable about the relationship. Joon Ki decides to inform a reporter about Yoon Ha working at the department store, and a story runs. Ji Yi is stunned to find out that Yoon Ha is a chaebol. Later, Yoon Ha tenders her resignation at the department store and gets an earful from Ji Yi about her encounter.

Chang Soo is furious at his brother when he finds out. He tells his brother he shouldn't have started a fight he can't win. He tries to get Joon Ki to admit to dating Yoon Ha, but doesn't ask directly. Yoon Ha's father breaks up with his mistress. Yoon Ha meets with her father at the company, and he informs her she'll be cut off if she leaves home and cuts ties. Chang Soo takes Ji Yi to an amusement park and they spend the day there.

That evening, Ji Yi is upset that Chang Soo attended a blind date with someone else. She storms off and brushes off his attempts to console her. Chang Soo heads to a bar, invites Joon Ki there, and asks him if he really actually likes him. Yoon Ha shows up for a blind date with him, but when she arrives, both Joon Ki and Chang Soo ask, "Why are you here?"

"Sir, may I suggest using something other than your neighbor's window as a sandtrap?"

While it appears to end on a "ruh-roh" moment, it really doesn't, as we only get the barest hint that Yoon Ha has been set up with Chang Soo. It's something he tells his brother to brush off his accusations that he's gone soft and to defray the idea that he actually has a thing for a part-time worker. So I'm not sure what's going on there. Blind dates set up for financial gain, having to hide it if you date beneath your station...glad I'm not part of that world. The chaebols can have it.

On to the mom. She's done a total 180. Okay, I guess I need to chalk it up to temporary insanity. The mother is once again stable and subdued even. She still has a thing about the mistress, but sounds almost resigned to it. I'm not really comfortable with characters changing personalities like a chameleon changes its skin. I dunno, maybe there's a bigger picture I'm not seeing here. I hope so. A drama that plays fast and loose with the script often ends up obviously rushed and badly done.

"If I'm really quiet, the dishes won't hear me."

I'm not sure what Joon Ki's motivation is for informing reporters about Yoon Ha. Was he trying to get her to accept her chaebol heritage and dump the poor girl image? I mean, I suppose he stands to gain from this if he marries her, but it still seemed odd. He's not rich, but Yoon Ha is. She even has her own villa. I know the fact that he grew up in abject poverty drives him not to be that way again, and maybe he's trying steer Yoon Ha into a position where she can effectively be rich the rest of her natural life, and him by extension if they're married?

Chang Soo is actually questioning his decisions for once. I'm not sure if that's good or bad for Ji Yi, but at least he seems to be asking himself if he's a good guy. You have to feel for him. If you've lived your whole life doing whatever you want and receiving validation from Mom for it, you've never had to deal with the consequences of your actions. I'm not sure what Ji Yi was entirely so mad about. But apparently she considered it a betrayal of the relationship to go on another date while they're dating, and I can see that. Monogamy maybe be hard for Chang Soo to accept, but to Ji Yi (as well as most of the rest of the world), it is natural.

"Sorry, I get carsick easily."

This drama seems to do a bit of meandering, and a few WTF moments that really aren't all that compelling. Maybe it's building toward something, and I'll hang on til I see it. The cute moments, I think, are worth it.

Opinions, thoughts, questions?
