5. Come Out

Hyunseung, one half of the duo Trouble Maker, not to mention one of the boys from B2ST, has dropped his new mini-album. This is his first solo album.

"It's Me," the intro track, is one minute 22 seconds of awesome. From the deep dubstep wub-wubs to Hyunseung's tenor that he effortlessly blends with the music, this track pops.

The title track, "Ma First," is a full-on club-banger. Here Hyunseung proudly and excitedly proclaims that his girl is his "first." About the time I thought to myself this track needs a rap, Giriboy shows up for a few notes and lays down the law. The hooky chorus "You're the first" should have any beat junkie jumping for joy.

"Break Up With Him" continues in the same musical vein, only less manic. Rookie rapper Tokki gives a good account of himself on this tune with good flow and timing. It is urging his friend's girl to break up with him, one of the arguments is that Hyunseung has caught her eye as well. Not a bad track at all.

"Dirty Jokes" is a 19+ track about the private jokes couples tell each other, and way too slow and lackluster for the subject matter. It's a tenderly sung ballad, and Hyunseung sings his heart out here. The jokes, such as they are, fall a bit flat -- however, there are reassurances that he likes her. But there's very little going on in the song itself. It was just kind of a snoozer to my ears.

The album wakes up again with "Come Out," and he's telling his girl that he doesn't care how she's dressed -- he just wants to see her:"You don't have to put on make up. You don't need to wear heels." The tone of the song is playful and tender at the same time. Whatever she's going through, they'll get through it together.

The final song on the disc is "I Said I Love You" is a slow track tinged with anger and regret. As you might guess from the title, the song is not sweetness and light, it's about the internal dialogue in a man's head after the relationship has fallen apart. Here he drops a few f-bombs ("I said I love you, f***!"), and there's even a woman screaming near the end, which lends a bit of a scary air to the whole thing.

Taken as a whole, it kind of tells a story, albeit not the happiest one. "It's Me" is also written to a girl, which blends into "Ma First." Emboldened by his conquest, he worms his way into another relationship and steals his friend's girl. "Dirty Jokes" is the playful period, the "honeymoon" that new lovers go through, spending time with his stolen girlfriend. "Come Out" mentions the girl is sad, possibly with the knowledge of what she's done. And the final track chronicles when everything falls apart.

Interesting concept (if I'm reading this right), and different from what I expected. Pop is not typically concept-laden, other than I want you, I love you, I miss you (or go away). This EP contains some killer jams as well as pretty high-quality songs overall. Even if you're not a fan of B2ST or Trouble Maker, this is definitely worth picking up.

MV REVIEW

The MV is one of those wild and crazy videos that doesn't make much sense. There's a plot, of sorts, but it's an odd duck:

We see Hyunseung walking through an alley because everyone knows that's where you can find hot chicks, right? (Maybe for pay, but I digress.) After greeting a couple of guys with fist bumps and handshakes, he sees a girl and immediately cops a feel.

She of course rebuffs his strong advances. "Get away from me you beast!" ;) So he busts out a mating dance right there in the alley with his buds. Even this doesn't impress her.

Back at his creepy apartment, he lays on top of the couch, Snoopy-style, and at various times the girl is there with him, then she's not. He whips a magic crayon and draws "holla" on her breast with a crayon (because that will change her mind, I just know it), and she still slaps him. I think it's just him imagining things, but what an imagination!

He heads to the club rocking some white threads and breaks out his best moves. He of course goes home with the girl (well, gets her in the elevator at any rate). His victory dance is priceless:

Then, he wakes up on his couch. The whole thing was a dream.

Or was it?

Highly amusing and never boring (even if his apartment is creepy), this is funny and has a plot that you can basically follow. Does it make much sense? No. Preposterous and confusing? Yes. But is it fun to watch? Yes, yes it is. :) It's much better than a box with lights. What are you waiting for? Click "play" already!
