HELLO VENUS - "Wiggle Wiggle" MV & Single Review

Hello Venus shimmied their way into a comeback recently with the release of their new video and 5th digital single, "Wiggle Wiggle."

Consensus: they aren't offering cups of tea anymore.

The song itself is actually pretty catchy. While there's no standout vocalists really, Alice and Yooyoung appear to sing the bulk of it. Just fast-forward past that really annoying 30 seconds at the beginning and you have a solid, hook-filled tune. I like the bouncing synth riff, and the chorus itself is pure pop goodness. Honeyed voices help carry this track, but I was disappointed there weren't more parts for Seoyoung.

The lyrics? Well, not exactly poetry. They talk mostly about dancing with the occasional interlude about meeting a guy in the club and giving him "a great present." Odds are that doesn't come gift-wrapped.

The tune should be familiar to fans of Hello Venus by now. They've performed it on 'Inkigayo,' 'Music Core,' 'Music Bank,' just to name a few off the top of my head. Thankfully, it has a little more substance to it than Jason Derulo's song of the same title. It's certainly not a bad song, even if it is all hooks. I liked it a lot more than I expected to.

MV REVIEW

If I enjoyed the song, I should enjoy the video, right? Well, not exactly.

The concept, such as it is, has the girls dancing in a club. Except they're not because the room is really small and there's no other patrons except them. It looks more like some noraebang that they dragged a smoke machine into. The effect is rather cheap and distracting. If the idea was that we're supposed to be watching them, I think they failed.

Watching the girls, I was even further put off because of the outfits. I sometimes wondered if I were watching a low-impact aerobics video instead of a K-pop MV. The two aren't entirely mutually exclusive, but the costumes lend themselves far more to a fitness video than anything else. The outfits are nice and colorful at least, and the famed half-shelled Venus has nothing on these ladies, but I'd like cooler-looking apparel.

And the dance wasn't particularly original or challenging (well, maybe if you're out of shape...). I'm serious: get up, try it out. It also emphasized the posterior a lot. Well, if you can't twerk, you must do something, right?

Honestly, this video was so cheaply-made I felt like I was watching a "dance practice (eye contact version)" of the video rather than an actual MV, just with better lighting. The sad thing is that they didn't succeed (at least to me) in what they were trying to do. They were trying out a new sexy concept for the girls, starting with "Sticky Sticky" and culminating with "Wiggle Wiggle." Anyone detecting a trend in the names here? Let me know ;)

I like Hello Venus, but I am definitely not a fan of this MV. All the wiggles in the world can't save this one.

No, not those Wiggles!
