[Spoilers!] Heirs Ep. 9: Five Truths Come to Light

Krystal, Lee Min Ho

My first article on 'Heirs' was a list of lies. Going into the halfway point of the drama, let's turn it around and look at some of the truths that we and our characters learn in episode nine...

SEE ALSO: In a follow-up interview on a YouTube show, Min Hee Jin admits that she considered methods for acquiring ADOR, but never acted on them

5. Hyun Joo was raised on the charity of Jeguk Group

Hyun Joo (Im Joo Eun) made just a brief appearance today- just long enough to mention that she's an orphan whose childhood was funded by the people at Jeguk Group. She's been offered a teaching position at the school, and she can't really say no, but she knows that Jeguk will release a PR article about her if she says yes. It's not a lot to go on, but it adds a new dimension to the Hyun Joo/Won/Hyo Shin triangle- Won (Choi Jin Hyuk) is the president of Jeguk Group, after all, and Hyo Shin (Kang Ha Neul) is a student at Jeguk High.

4. Young Do tripped Eun Sang on purpose

It's not so much the tripping that's the truth, but the underlying motive- Young Do (Kim Woo Bin) keeps waffling between picking on Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye) to bother Tan (Lee Min Ho) and picking on her because he likes her. The scene when he confesses (sort of) to her is interesting, because it echoes their forgotten first meeting at the bike shop. Young Do and one of the mechanics hit on her to try to get her number, and she shut them up by promptly calling the police. Today, some other guys hit on Eun Sang at work and she threatens to call the police- but before she can, Young Do bursts in and kicks one of the guys' chairs over. You weren't charming then, and you're not charming now, Young Do.

3. Eun Sang is social care

We all know how Eun Sang got to Jeguk, but many characters are still wondering how it happened. Rather than let Young Do hold this information over her head any longer, Eun Sang admitted to it point-blank. Took the wind out of his I-think-I'm-being-clever sails, ha ha. I love how Eun Sang calls people on their nonsense when they're being ridiculous. Young Do's little show in the cafeteria last episode was a step too far, and she's done playing his game.

2. Ki Ae is Tan's mother

Eun Sang's not the only one who's over Young Do's shenanigans- when Young Do crosses the line by pretending to think that Ki Ae (Kim Sung Ryung) is a maid in Tan's house, Tan refuses to take it. He introduces Ki Ae as his mother- much to her astonishment and fear- and still refuses to kneel for Young Do. As Tan said, once Young Do gives up the information about Tan's mother, he has nothing on Tan- now we'll see if that holds true.

1. Eun Sang likes Tan

So, she finally admitted it, to herself and to Tan. But these feelings come with the catch that they don't matter- neither of them can do anything about it. Eun Sang explains that trying to date while at Jeguk would be way too much trouble for both of them- they should just finish school and worry about their feelings after they graduate. Ahh, she's such a smart and mature girl. She's right, of course, but Tan doesn't take the news particularly well.

Reading through recent comments, I noticed that some of you seem to think that I hate Young Do, and I want to clarify my position. Kim Woo Bin is phenomenal in the role- his expression alone tells just as much, if not more, about him and the story than the dialogue does. There were points when he was dealing with his feelings for Eun Sang when I actually almost felt sorry for him, even though he's so needlessly awful to her that I have no real reason to feel sorry for him over that relationship. I still want him to stay far away from Eun Sang and basically everyone else in the world, but A+ to Woo Bin for getting me to sympathize with such a cold-hearted character.

I've also noticed that a LOT of you are Bo Na (f(x)'s Krystal) fans, which makes me so happy to see! She may not have a huge role in the show, but her relationship with Eun Sang is so interesting. On the one hand, she's jealous of Eun Sang and Chan Young (CNBLUE's Minhyuk)'s relationship- she's very realistically jealous of their friendship and history, even though she seems to know there's nothing going on between them. Despite her dislike for Eun Sang, she still helps take care of her at school because Chan Young cares about Eun Sang and Bo Na cares about Chan Young. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Eun Sang and Bo Na's relationship progresses and if they can ever really be friends.

I love Eun Sang's independence and maturity, but she also has a young, fun side to her that I miss. With all the stress in her life, we're losing the Eun Sang who loves horror movies and sticks her hand out the side of a convertible and gets an Americano just because it's American and she's in America. With all the new drama that Ki Ae and Young Do are bringing to the table, the stress just keep piling up- as great as all the drama is, I hope we get a nice, fluffy episode soon where Eun Sang can get a break from all the crazy in her life.

So, what do you guys think so far?
