Who will be the next top male group in K-pop?

Who will be the next top male group in K-pop?

In 1996, 5-member idol group H.O.T debuted, and eight years later in 2004, 5-member groupTVXQ stepped into the music scene. Now, another eight years have past.

Kang Tae Gyu, a mass media critic, commented, "Everyone is watching to see if the '8-year cycle for male idols' will come true. According to the theory, starting in 2012 a new top male idol group will appear."

Several entertainment companies have debuted new boy bands this year. The creators of HOT and TVXQ, SM Entertainment, debuted 12-member groupEXO, who are promoting in both China and Korea simultaneously. SECRET's company, TS Entertainment, debuted B.A.P in January, and the group has constantly released singles, keeping in close contact with fans. Cube Entertainment has also debuted B2B, whilePledis Entetainment debuted NU'EST.

These groups did not fail in face of all the hype. EXO has received much love from China as B.A.P has been noticed from before their debut for their strong performance. They have been gaining popularity in Europe and other countries as well. Also, B2B and NU'EST have become spokespersons for teens.

There are those who believe the next top idol group has yet to debut. With more acts set to debut throughout the year, no one can be sure of who will turn out on top. DJ DOC's Kim Chang Ryeol has announced he will be debuting a new DJ DOC, Wonder Boys, gaining much interest. Another 5-member band gearing up to debut in October, reported to rival H.O.T and TVXQ, also has great musical abilities. They have already been signed for CFs and have been gaining popularity overseas.

In order to rise to the top, the group must be able to attract a large, mixed fan base. H.O.T and TVXQ attracted female fans in their teens and twenties. With amazing performances, both groups remained 'the best'. First generation idols, H.O.T, also gained immense popularity in China, while second generation idol, TVXQ, took over Japan and other Asian countries.

Though there have been many male idol groups to debut and gain popularity, not one has achieved the star power of H.O.T and TVXQ. One insider remarked, "Every time H.O.T members speak of getting back together, it becomes a hot topic. I am excited to see the new stars who will overcome Big Bang, Super Junior, etc., and bring a new era to K-pop."
