allkpop TV Guide: Big Ep. 11-12

Official Synopsis: 18-year-old Kang Kyung Joon's (Shin Won-Ho) spirit suddenly becomes transplanted into the body of 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae (Gong Yoo). Seo Yon Jae is a successful doctor who is engaged to high school teacher Gil Da Ran (Lee Min Jung). Gil Da Ran just so happens to be the teacher of 18-year-old Kang Gyung Joon. More problems ensue when 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae falls in love with another woman.

Ratings: With the conclusion of MBC's 'Lights and Shadows' last week, 'Golden Time' aired its pilot episode with an 8.7% rating. SBS's 'The Chaser' and KBS's 'Big' were able to experience increase in ratings, as 'The Chaser' took first place with a 17.9% rating, while 'Big' received a 9.2%. 'The Chaser' broke the 20% mark with a 20.7% rating with its Tuesday broadcast, while 'Big' received an 8.9% and 'Golden Time' took a 7.8%.

Recap of Ep. 11: After Kyung Joon tells Da Ran he will leave her when his soul returns to his body, Da Ran grabs his arm but Kyung Joon tells her not to hold him back and to only continue walking her path without looking towards him. Meanwhile, Ma Ri (miss A's Suzy) continues investigating on Kyung Joon's dad and takes a photo of Yoon Jae's dad talking to the art professor. While Kyung Joon meets up with Yoon Jae's dad, he notices a brochure of the art professor and realizes the two know each other.

Kyung Joon takes Da Ran on a shopping trip, after Yoon Jae's mother begins to berate Da Ran for not dressing like a doctor's wife. However, Da Ran becomes even more depressed that she is becoming more attached to Kyung Joon. Kyung Joon tries to cheer him up with his aegyo and singing, and although Da Ran enjoys it at first, she becomes even more upset at liking Kyung Joon even more.

Kyung Joon and Da Ran go to the art exhibition, but are alerted by Ma Ri that Kyung Joon's father is not the art professor and his father is currently looking for Kyung Joon. Later, Da Ran meets up with the art professor, who tells her he does not know who Kyung Joon is and also apologizes that Da Ran's accident was caused by him as Yoon Jae was rushing towards him when he bumped into Da Ran.

Da Ran is so shocked at the new truth that she meets with Se Young, who confirms that it's the truth and that Yoon Jae had never used the house key she had given to him. Although Kyung Joon prepared flowers for her, Da Ran comes home upset with her misunderstanding. Da Ran meets up with Yoon Jae's mother, who hands her jewlery. Yoon Jae's mother tells Da Ran to leave Yoon Jae, but Da Ran admits that she will once the original Yoon Jae comes back. After the meeting, Da Ran comes out crying. Kyung Joon tells Da Ran if he won't stop crying, he won't let her go.

Recap of Ep. 12: Kyung Joon tells Da Ran that once she takes off her marriage ring, it signifies that Da Ran will stay by Kyung Joon's side and leave Yoon Jae. Meanwhile, Yoon Jae's parents discuss Kyung Joon and Yoon Jae. Yoon Jae's mother hopes that Yoon Jae's father chooses her and Yoon Jae again, instead of Kyung Joon.

As Kyung Joon treats Da Ran nicely, Da Ran gets even angrier and tells Kyung Joon that she hates it that she's enjoying her time with Kyung Joon while waiting for Yoon Jae. In a fit of anger, Da Ran throws out all the items Kyung Joon had given to her, but then ultimately brings it back.

Kyung Joon and Ma Ri discuss Kyung Joon's future. Although he couldn't find his father, he doesn't want Da Ran to know since it might hold her back. Da Ran goes on a camping trip with her family, but makes an excuse for Kyung Joon to not follow around. As Kyung Joon wants to go, Da Ran's family arranges for the two to spend time alone.

Yoon Jae's father meets up with Kyung Joon's relative, telling them that he plans to take Kyung Joon's body back to America, while his relatives can take care of the trust fund. Yoon Jae's parents visit Kyung Joon's body in the hospital, where Kyung Joon experiences an out-of-body moment at the campsite where he enters into his original body for a few seconds. Later, Yoon Jae's father meets with Ma Ri, but before she could confirm that he is Kyung Joon's father, the two see Kyung Joon faint in Yoon Jae's body.

As Da Ran begins considering a teaching job in the countryside, she begins to make up her mind between Yoon Jae and Kyung Joon. During Kyung Joon's birthday, she buys a watch for him engraved with his initials and takes off her wedding ring, noticed by Se Young. After Kyung Joon's (in Yoon Jae's body) medical results come out, revealing the recurrence of his childhood disesase, Yoon Jae's dad decides to use Kyung Joon's body for a bone marrow transfer.

After Se Young tells Kyung Joon about Da Ran's suspicious behavior, he rushes over to Da Ran in the park. As Da Ran is about to put the ring back on, he prevents her from doing so and goes in for the kiss, as the ring drops to the ground.

kdramacrazy's Thoughts:

[Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, and not necessarily those ofallkpop.]

'Big' does well with the nuances of love, which is actually quite nice to see among all the dramatic and quick, spontaneous romance. I have to praise the Hong sisters for their writing skills in seamlessly transitioning Da Ran from Kyung Joon to Yoon Jae. Although most of the viewers were already shipping for Da Ran and Kyung Joon, then we begin to question Da Ran's faithfulness and loyalty with love. But in the complicated (and rather drab, which I'll get to next) pondering and crying over giving up Yoon Jae, it helps us move to the next part of the story while still maintaining a love for the main character. But while I do love the sweet moments and how it's more of a realistic drama (romance-wise) than the other dramas you'll find, I don't know if it's the right sort of medium and if it'll cater towards most viewers. A lot of viewers (myself included) enjoy the exciting and action-packed dramas that will almost never happen in reality as dramas, which makes this drama less enjoyable and fun. While in reality, the romance plot will most likely occur in circles like this dramas has been doing, a lot of viewers don't want to experience the drag and the drab plot movement, especially in TV. So while I do enjoy the drama and think it's successful with the nuances, I don't particulary enjoy the drama as leisure (although I do enjoy all the Gong Yoo body revealing and the adorable moments between Kyung Joon and Da Ran).

And with all the makjang elements that go on about the family, inheritance, the obligatory bitchy mother. I'm not particulary attached to it, except for those shaking-my-head moments with Yoon Jae's parents. I would find it much more interesting once the bodies switch back and Yoon Jae begins interfering. Not only did I expect the body switch to happen sooner, but I also hope that Yoon Jae would come back to pose some challenge to Kyung Joon. Because the only thing attaching Da Ran to Yoon Jae are those memories, which the viewer didn't directly see. If we saw Yoon Jae in action, maybe we would finally understand her contemplation over who to choose. I would be quite interested to see the dynamic between Yoon Jae and Kyung Joon as brothers and saviors and to see the bone marrow transplat problem resolved with both awake in their own bodies.
