Review: FT Island Mini Album "Jump Up"

F.T Island or FTI for short, is the name of a South Korean instrumental band. The name F.T Island stands for 'Five Treasures Island', signifying each member as the 'treasures'. Their official color is yellow, and fans carry yellow flags known as "pentasticks." Their self-titled debut album was the sixth best-selling album of 2007 in South Korea. FT Island has quickly become one of the most famous pop/rock bands in the Kpop scene. They have even managed to cross into Japan and have landed on the Oricon charts. Recently, one of FT Islands members, Wonbin, has been replaced by Song Seung Hyun. However, this did not stop FT Island from continuing their music. FT Island recently released their new mini album entitled "Jump Up". Here is my full review of the album: FT Island "Jump Up" Genre: Pop/Rock; Ballad Korean Issue Date: 2009-02-11 Track 1: 나쁜 여자야 ( (You Are A) Bad Girl) An overly emo and dramatic song, so of course I love it. Throughout the entire song there is a strong string section adding to the overall depressing feeling of the song. This is the single they are promoting the album with, which in my opinion was a great choice. The music video reflects the lyrics well. Check it out here: Video Credit: jaeurazn1mv Track 2: 인형처럼 (Like A Doll) I like this song better than Bad Girl. The first 30 seconds is sort of an intro for the rest of the song. This song features the second vocal (Song Seung Hyun?) on the verse and very nice harmonies with HongKi during the chorus. The 1st verse starts peaceful with just the piano playing and they turn it up as the song progresses. I love the bridge part. Track 3: 마법 (Magic) This song is finally one where the guitars aren't drowned out by the all the other editing layers on top of the music. This track features the new member of the group, Song Seung Hyun, with a rap passage which is...o.k. But, really? Rap!? Well, the guitar solo while the guy is rapping is good. Track 4: Missing You "Missing You" features a sampling of an old famous orchestral piece that I can't figure out the name to. Anyways, this track is actually very good too. I like the bass part during the verses. A very generic guitar solo is played in this song before the last chorus. Track 5: 그대와 나 (You And Me) In this song bassist Lee Jae Jin and guitar/pianist Choi Jong Hun are on lead vocals. Their voices are actually very pleasant; a pleasant surprise. Probably the most chill song throughout the album. The guitar solo is the best on the album. Track 6: 어쩌란 말이야 (What Can I do?) Some of the guitar strumming patterns throughout the song reminds me of Maroon 5. There is another rap bit in this song which is better than the first one but still the question arises...why??? Tempo is slow but I love the guitars throughout the song. Overall I give this album 4.5 out of 5 This album gets high marks due to a couple of reasons. First off is the switching of singers throughout the album. I love it when bands showcase their other member's vocal talents. This relieves the redundancy of hearing the same lead singer over and over, keeping the album fresh and exciting to listen to. Second, I was kind of scared of how the new guy would affect the band's music but he seems to have a nice voice. Only complaints I have are about the rapping...stick to singing please. Here is some advice: If I were you I would become a member and check out our very cool forums, to find cool people, gossip, and other free goodies.
