Sports fans petitioned the IOC to cancel Winter Olympics

Although the IOC and sports federations' officials virtually fail to respond to a potential nuclear threat from North Korea, a group of activists decided to take the initiative and petitioned the IOC either to move the XXIII Olympic Winter Games from the Republic of Korea or to cancel them altogether. Authors of the petition are sure that the situation on the Korean Peninsula can go out of control at any moment and turn into a real war that will make thousands of athletes and spectators hostages of circumstance.

Scroll down for the text of the petition:

There are less than two months left before the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang but athletes and spectators of the games still have not got security guarantees, which sparks deep concern in connection with the rapidly deteriorating situation on the Korean Peninsula.

In the course of the current year the USA and South Korea conducted multiple joint military exercises, the largest of them were held in early December with the use of stealth fighters and bombers. Along with that, the USA is making plans for 'bloody nose' military attack on North Korea's nuclear facilities. As for North Korea, it called recent UN sanctions 'an act of war'. Tensions are mounting. However, the fact that China is preparing for large-scale refugee crisis and is about to muster the army is testimony to the fact that a war against North Korea is unavoidable and chances are high that the Winter Olympic Games and all its visitors will fall victim to it.

In respect of these facts and owing to clear war policy of the countries involved, the International Olympic Committee needs to arrive at a discretionary decision to relocate the XXIII Olympic Winter Games from South Korea to a safer place or consider total abortion of the games. In this case thousands of lives of athletes and foreign visitors are at stake. Security of people but not loss of face of IOC and South Korea should be the primary concern. This is the exact reason why it is important to support this petition and make organizers of the games give up on this fatal Olympic reckless attempt.

The fact is on target in the petition that the IOC and the Republic of Korea are concerned more about the image rather than about the lives of thousands of guests of the Olympics. However, if the athletes appear to get taken captive by war, sports officials' credibility will be affected even more than in case they cancel the competitions. It's still possible to move the Winters to any location on the planet and the expenses are incomparable with possible risks.

No doubt, the petition is pretty relevant and well-timed. The more signs are collected the bigger is the possibility that the IOC goes into the suggestion and responds publicly to the opinion of millions of sport lovers who are indifferent neither to the athletes' well-being nor to the future of the Olympic movement which must avoid casting an imputation on its reputation with a deadly gamble in PyeongChang.
