It has always baffled me that a top girl group like Sistar who were dubbed as Digital Queens and Queens of Summer and had one of the most successful sub-units (Sistar19) and successful collaborations could only sell about 20k albums. Having high digital sales and achieving a lot of PAKs means that a lot of people love your music. I would have expected a lot of people to start stanning them because they constantly produce bops that appeal to a huge audience. High physical sales is usually associated to having a big fandom but their physical sales can't even do their status justice. Does this mean that Sistar never had a big fanbase? Why??? o_Oo_Oo_O

I guess because most of their fans were casual fans

It wasn't just Sistar, pretty much all GGs didn't sell albums back then, except for SM ones(and we all know bulk fucking why) . 20k is actually good for their time.

It more or less has to do with the concept that the gg goes for too. I read on a Korean article like 3 years ago that ggs with a sexy concept usually get good public recognition and get invited to events easily meanwhile lack fandom power. Girl groups with more innocent concept or a classier one like apink, snsd, kara and from new generation twice and gfriend got huge fandom.

Meanwhile sistar alongside AOA,EXID and Girl's day were all considered big but never had a massive fandom and impressive physical sales despite having huge hits. Actually groups like lovelyz or WJSN sold more than what sistar did (physically),tho they don't have hits. Bcz they have a more approachable image.

I guess that's proof of why numbers not always equals a successful group. Sistar was big, despite lacking in some categories like physical sales and a large fanbase.

I think you got a point.
If the song is catchy then it's gonna get attention, but maybe people tend to feel more attached to groups that have a sweet image because they can relate more easily.

It's what Princess said that sexy girl groups have a hard time building a fanbase.

They don't always go hand in hand though like I think the IOI groups have better physicals than Oh My Girl and EXID but they chart way better than the IOI with most/all just failing to chart I think

This. It wasn't such a bad place to be in either... they may not have had a massive fandom, but they didn't languish. As OP said, Queens of Summer. Having general popularity, and not just fandom popularity, is something a lot of groups strive for, but can't quite get.

because many people ultimately go for looks to decide whether they stand or not, and apparently sistar does not have that cute innocent look that koreans like

The problem is that Sistar was considered a top tier group along the likes of SNSD and 2NE1 yet GFriend who was barely a year old by then almost outsold their Shake It EP. They couldn't do tours like SNSD and 2NE1 did and they only sold out one of their concerts.

MMM is kinda a weird group and you can see over time they built a fanbase.

Girls Day are probably in that category too, maybe Miss A too.
I would say BlackPink has a 'sexy' image but they seem to be doing well sales and fan-base wise, probably because of strong visuals and of course they're a YG group.

i understand, but MMM is a example of a similar gg doing just what Sistar did not. Smaller agency semi sexy vocally focused digimons.
Was Sistar disposable pop? Did the albums suck?
I know i never considered buying any of them and i like Sistar, really like Bora as a person.

Sistar was popular with Korean public and dubbed Summer Queens for good reason, with a series of hits and high digitals up until disbandment. But the public weren't so dedicated as to purchase their albums. So, high digitals, low physicals.

Fangirls are generally more dedicated than fanboys and buy up the albums (not to generalize guys, I'm sure there are some dedicated fanboys out there).

Sexy girl groups don't generally appeal to fangirls (I can't imagine why: sexy groups are my favorite), so Sistar has no dedicated female fanbase to back them.

I honestly love Sistar a lot, if I lived in Korea (or a place where it was easy to access K-pop albums) I would've bought all their albums up myself.

I kinda already explained it. Don't know why aren't you asking about Winner, Ikon or BigBang sales being low compared to other boy groups. That's just how they are marketed.
