Who do you think is going to be the it girl group of the 3rd generation? The girl group who people will think of the most when people look back at the 3rd gen. We have multiple girl groups who define each generation, but who is the main girl group of that generation. For example SNSD was the 'it' girl group of the 2nd gen.

Sm's GG when they debut. They will probably outshine twice like snsd did with WG

They are major differences between Wonder Girls and Twice. Also GG outshined Wonder Girls when they got shipped off to the US.

People need to stop saying that. Yes they promoted in the U.S but it was for such a brief period of time it really didn't do anything. They returned a couple months later and kept getting millions of sales with new releases. GG outshined WG because GEE was the most popular girl group song of all time.

Probably Twice, which is a shame if you are to compare them to the 'IT' GG of the second gen.

There's a stark contrast between talent.

I love WG, but people have to stop saying that Soshi only outshined them because they were sent to the US.
Gee had already been charting for over two weeks (I believe) by the time JYP announced Wonder Girls US advancement. They would've become extremely popular anyway, in fact they were already gaining popularity in 2008. WG's Korean hiatus just made it a bit easier.

What is the "it" GG supposed to include? I assure you, if the "it" GG is determined by people's own opinions of the "it" GG (which in all honesty, it is), you would get varied answers now, compared to the answer/s you will get from the 2nd gen.

There are a number of GG's from 3rd gen with vast amounts of popularity within the K-pop industry, each of which have made remarkable success stories in their own right.

K-Pop is bigger now than during the time of the 2nd gen, and more people have gravitated towards 3rd gen groups than they did with the 2nd gen, obviously due to size in recognition of K-pop now compared to a few years ago etc.

The top 5 GG's right now and the top 5 GG's of the 3rd gen are; Twice, Red Velvet, Black Pink, MAMAMOO and Gfriend.

Whose to determine the "it" girl group from those 5 when ALL are arguably equal in success/impact and each continue to dominate. When people look back at the 2nd gen to suggest the "it" GG, sure, most would say SNSD. Then 2NE1 and WG. But SNSD's impact arguably stands out the most from their time, regardless of the fact they were Korea's #1GG. Within the K-pop/idol industry, as we all know, it takes WAY more than just topping albums charts etc to determine the "it" GG, or the success/popularity of a GG. It means impact. Again, whose to determine that impact? Especially now that K-pop is way more saturated, and more people are divided or equally like a number of groups, especially the top 5.

So, for the 3rd gen GG's? Regardless of whose topping charts etc, ALL the top 5 groups mean something to a lot of people and have ALL achieved many good things, hence their place as top 5. The top 5 have certainly made their own impact on the industry and will continue to do so. Neither of them, objectively, stands out more than the other, based on what they have achieved and the vast fanbase each group has.

Ask K-pop fans who the "it" GG is now, and you will get a number of different answers. Most answers would be one of the top 5, I'm sure. I know my "it" GG won't be the same as someone else etc. But regardless of which of the top 5 someone would chose, even from an unbiased and objective point of view, no one could argue when someone suggests any of the top 5 as being their "it" GG.

To answer your question as objectively as I can, K-Pop doesn't have an "it" GG. It has a top 5, and all have made an equal impact on the industry that has resonated with MANY K-pop fans from all over the world.

SNSD could do it all - they were at ease in multiple concepts (Red Velvet), whether impeccably produced cute (Twice, GFriend) or sassy girl crush (Blackpink, Mamamoo), with undeniable vocal talent and stage presence (Mamamoo), and tight, iconic choreography (Twice, GFriend, Red Velvet). They had something exceptional to offer almost any fan of kpop. There is no one group like that these days.

Personally, I believe an IT girl/boy group should be the one to set the trend.

This is going to sound weird and out of place compared to most people's answer, but as someone who doesn't belong anywhere, I believe Mamamoo is the real IT girl group for this generation.

    Why?

If you look at BTS, they set a trend for groups being known to produce and write their own music. Which is why, currently they're the IT boy group.

A bit difficult to determine the IT girl group, because of how small the impact is. But I've noticed how Mamamoo have set the bar higher for female idols to be more expressive in their performance. They set an example, a trend.

Thus, in my opinion, that's what it takes to ever be considered as an IT girl/boy group.

Back when SNSD was active didn't people constantly criticize their choreo, stage presence, vocals, overall talent, etc?

People always love to glorify and defend things after they're no long active. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

To answer the OP. in 5-10 years after the dust has settled there will be only one girl group who managed to capture the hearts of the entire world and go down as THE queen bitches of third gen.

That group will be fromis_9. Nothing but facts and tea.

this type of comment is funny :D
don't you remember the fanwar amongst wg snsd 2ne1? people shit on snsd back in the day just like people did with twice now
taeyeon and hyoyeon are the only ones getting praised. tiffany always messing up live stage. jessica the lazy dancer. yoona only there for her face. people don't know what sooyoung did for the team. sunny? yeah the sm's niece
i have a hard time being sone back then
it's only because of time (and blackjack and wonderful grew old for fanwar) that people start praising snsd for their power and talent and whatnot and it becomes hyperbole
which would happen with twice if they keep relevant for 3 or 4 more year
when people grew tired of downplaying a group, newer fans will start praising the old ones based on what they can see, which is numbers
just like 4 years from now signal will be praised as it won soty. because people didn't know the "controversy" behind it ;)
