Were you aware of K Pop before you became a fan?

Having been involved in Anime for the most part of my life and discussing it among fellow fans as a teenager there was some fellow members on a Anime forum who discussed K Pop and the first ever name that came to my attention on a regular basis was BoA who was at her peak at the time (this was around 2005).

Another name that I saw occasionally was none other than SNSD..... I knew that they were a Korean girl group who were gaining a lot of attention because of Gee but at the time I wasn't interested in K Pop or Korean culture so it was always a case of "oh they are talking about that group again" when I saw fellow members talking about them on the Anime forum. At that time I considered checking them out a few times out of curiosity, but never did. And it wasn't till 2010 when 'Oh!' and 'Genie' appeared in my recommendations on Youtube that I finally decided to learn more about those K Pop artists who my fellow Anime fans were talking about.

I had a very short J-pop phase and I heard of BoA during this time (it was on a skyblog, the french equivalent of myspace at the time so you know how old I am lol). But I didn't want to look more into it. Than a few years later (2010) I heard Nobody by Wonder Girls in a hair tutorial and first I thought Korean sounded very awkward but it only took me a few weeks to get completely hooked.

I knew about it but wasn't really interested in checking it out before. I was too deep into Japanese stuff- anime/manga and even video games. Some of my friends had watched a few K dramas and movies like Winter Sonata, Mischievous Kiss and so on.

I was a bigger fan of Korean cinema before I became a Kpop fan. They make some of the best revenge/serial killer/horror flicks in the world. Oldboy, Memories of Murder, A Bittersweet Life, A Dirty Carnival and I Saw the Devil were some of my favorite movies. I only got into kpop accidentally after checking out a reaction video by Fine Brothers Entertainment.

I had no clue until I was sent to Itaewon for work. An invite to a M/V after party started my addiction. Even then it took seeing a bunch of shows to fully realize how huge it was.

    Yeah-sort of
I got into Kpop in 2009, but in 2007 a local teen magazine wrote 2 sentences about the 'Korean music phenomena-TVXQ' so I kind of thought that the music scene in Korea must be quite strong.

I have a funny story: I once met a girl named Jessica Jung. One day I was trying to try that you can find everyone on the interent and I came accross the other Jessica "Sica" Jung, but I never paid attention to her after that but I learned she was in a group named Girls Generation. I knew there were people who watched Korean dramas and I though how much obsessed with soap operas can you get?

But then I was shown a kdrama and I was hooked. I kept watching them until I decided I wanted more and I remembered there was something called kpop and I started searching it up. I liked what I found enough to keep listening to it and here I still am.

So basically, yes, I was aware of it before I became a fan.

Sorry for the long preamble to my reply, lol.

    Kinda ....
2010 I was in a chat forum and a user used to link songs.
I checked out one and it was a bunch of guys dancing and singing in a language i did not know. It was fun but I thought if i were going to watch boy bands i would look up bsb or Nsync ect, something in english.

A few weeks to a month later he linked another some strange wanna be hip hop boy girl thing. Hated that lasted under a min.

About the same time span another link. This was a bunch of girls telling some devil to run sounded like a guy cheating girl kicking him to the curb song, but still fun and not stupid bitter like say TS or blu cantrell. I liked that. Clicked a recommended song that was cheerleaderish. That was super fun too. I had no idea what was going on but it was fun.
Clicked another reco that started with a guy locking up a store and girls in a shop window.
Loved it, spent 2-3 hours watching videos looking desperately for English translations trying to google who they were.
By dinner that night i was hooked spent my free time for 2 weeks learning about them.
At the end of that time i was only listening to GG that was my start.
Here were kids singing fun happy songs, genuinely, humble and likable, seemed to really embrace the power and responsibility of being examples. The more i learned the deeper i fell.

I have pretty much the same story as you. I was an anime fan and searched up anime osts and that's how I came across SNSD's ITNW though I didn't know that they were a kpop girl group then.
And then in 2014-2015 someone mentioned Nine Muses' s Sleepless Nights on one of the fanfictions I was reading and I searched it up and that's how I got into Kpop.
So yes I knew yet kind of didn't know.:sweatr:

I was aware for about 2 months before I eventually got into it. My friends were huge fans.
