YGE records a 2.1 billion won deficit in first half (Q1, Q2)

YG Entertainment that was once the most profitable entertainment agency is struggling.

Unlike other agencies that are reporting record profits, YG Entertainment recorded a 2.1 billion won (1.76 million USD) deficit throughout the first and second quarters

Even lower tier agencies like FNC posted an operating profit surplus of 800 million won (670,000 USD) in the second quarter. Compared to YG, FNC's operating surplus is four times greater than operating revenues posted by YG.

When compared to Big Hit, the gap is even greater. Big Hit reported a record first half operating profit of 39.1 billion won (32.6 million USD) thanks to global achievements from its main group BTS. SM and JYP also generated profits of 6.7 billion (5.6 million USD) won and 15.2 billion won (12.7 million USD), respectively.

Is the artists's agency making good money a good sign? I mean, part of it may come from the fact that they take a bigger cut off of the profits than the others agency?

The companies can prove that their artists make a profit even when stock prices are in the basement.

That is importent for Annual Planning 2020/2021 (Investing for debuts and comebacks)!

    K-POP agencies market capitalization [2010 to 2019]

Top K-Pop agencies’ market capitalization changes from 2010 to 2019

In the last decade, we have witnessed the top K-Pop agencies going through a number of up and downs from successful album releases and overseas tours to unexpected scandals and lengthy hiatus of popular artists. Market capitalization is one of the most accurate indicators of whether a company is in its prime or is struggling through a difficult time. The video above illustrates the market capitalization change of the major K-Pop entertainment companies (SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, FNC Entertainment, and CUBE Entertainment) that are listed on the Korean public stock market (KOSDAQ) from 2010 to 2019.

As you can see, SM and YG dominated throughout most of the decade but JYP has come on strong as of late.

Will SMbe able to keep its crown from JYP who recently came out of prolonged stagnation and now in its golden age? Will YG who has fallen behind the competitors be able to rise back again? Or will we see the emergence of a new company to take the first place? Perhaps when Big Hit Entertainment finally has its IPO?

Check out the detailed ranking in the video above!
