I was there when The Great War of Youtube views became so intense with the threads about Youtube views (first hour, first 24 hours, first 100m, first 200m, etc...) pop up like crazy.

But why it suddenly became irrelevant, especially from some specific fandoms, which were part of that war?

I think they still matter a bit, but the view wars of 2017-18 will not be missed

I remember way back in like 08-10 no one really cared about it. In the media age people think views=worth, which to me is very flawed. People constantly shit on SHINee for having so little views in recent years but don't understand that is Shawol literally could care less about that and we support by actually physically owning things and the like. They've made it 11 years this way. I noticed they started to care more about it after 2011 and for some reason something shifted recently. I haven't figured out what it is yet tbh.

When the buying of views through ads got overly ridiculous, thanks JYP

YouTube is I think the second most used website daily after Google (duh, it’s Google) so I don’t get when people say YouTube views aren’t important. It’s just the ad buying that got sketchy.

Other companies did it too, not just JYP.

Because it's actually not that important in the long run. Views do not equal sales or worth. Usually, super high view counts are due to fans streaming religiously, not individual people, so views are misleading in terms of how many people actually buy the albums (although obviously higher view count does generally mean the group has more sales, that's not always the case).

Like, sure you have your view count giants among newer groups like BTS and Blackpink, but older groups with way under 50M views on any one video (a lot of the time around or under 10M-15M, even!) still have a ton of sales. E.g. SHINee (aside from Ring Ding Dong and Lucifer). Heck, even VIXX was listed in the Top 10 bgs of the decade in some sales chart or other in late 2019 and their highest MV view count is 26M on Chained Up. These groups with low view counts but good sales are usually due to slightly older fans, who don't really care about streaming/the fanbase as a whole doesn't care for it.

So yeah, views don't really mean anything to the groups. They get nothing physical from it (e.g. an award, money, whatever), just recognition (though again, a lot of views are current fans of said group).

so The Great War of Youtube views was just a useless period, when it last more that several years? If I remember correctly, it all started in 2016 till last year... what a useless life kpop fans had went through

Boy group fans talk about album sales more than anything else
You should know this by now

    YouTube is another metric
    Spotify is another

I think with bts & BP upcoming CBs, everyone is curious to see whether each of the group will experience a massive decrease or an increase

youtube views have ALWAYS been important it's just the fans whose faves get barely any views that complain a lot about it
youtube is the biggest video sharing platform on earth and has such a wide and global reach and has helped every single kpop group reach greater heights

    so let these people complain

If you look up old archive, you will find it so funny.

Some group stan was liking youtube views a lot because it favors their fav, but now they pretend they don't care.

Same thing happened to brand reputation. Some group stan even said their fav are making history when they got no.1 brand reputation for several months back-to-back. Now they pretend they don't care.

Things change when there is someone surpassing their fav.

The last fight was when Twice released Feel Special. You haven't seen much because the only fandoms that fight about this are blinks and Armys. It used to be Onces but really Once isn't a streaming fandom so Twice is basically the third strongest in YouTube views but behind BP and BTS.

When BTS and BP comeback you will see a resurgence in this fight. But until then, it always dies down.
