As the title says, do you guys think Song of the Summer should be a category at Awards Shows? It wouldn’t be as big as Song of the Year per say, but it will have it’s own merit for being Song of the Summer. It’d be for songs that don’t quite hold up to SOTY status but performed well. Some examples would be: 2017 — Red Flavor 2018 — Dance The Night Away 2019 — Drunk on Love (I’m not sure about 2019 as I fell out of K-POP at the time so please correct me if I’m wrong) I feel like it’d help alleviate some of the tension between fandoms while also making clear what is worthy of a SOTY or not. It would also give more attention and appreciation to songs so that’s a plus. I’m not sure what the criteria or time period would be but that’s what this thread is for. Thoughts? (Please be respectful)
I think that it'd be a good idea but a lot of fans would discredit the award so it'd just end up becoming one of those awards that are like "best star" or "icon award"
Which is why I don’t really advocate for the Male-Female separate SOTY category. This Song of the Summer category would be smaller, probably equivalent to a bonsang but it would have its own merit as an award.
Oh I get what you mean. I agree but then I think it wouldn’t make sense to not have a song of the winter category (although it’ll probably be a ballad winning let’s be honest)
i somewhat agree, but would it be considered a daesang? also for 2019 idk about a feb and april release being summer songs itll probably be drunk on love it was a really big song last year in the summer
The thing is, barely anyone releases during the Winter season and when they do it’s automatically for the next SOTY because it has a longer time period to gain points and etc... Plus Song of the Summer is already a sort of thing in some Western Award Shows so it’s not like it’s a completely foreign idea.
I think it would be lower than a Daesang to not take away from the grandeur of Song of the Year. I don’t know how big a Bonsang is but probably to the likes of that maybe? Also yeah, I wasn’t sure about Twit or Fancy. I was thinking maybe Snapping but I guess Drunk on Love would be good (I’m not familiar with that song at all).
But isn’t it harder to win SOTY with a song released in the winter of the past year though? I don’t think any recent SOTY has been a past-year-winter-song There’s loads of winter ballads released during winter though, and those are often underappreciated

Winter starts in late December so there’s not that much of a time frame from the past year. The only song I recall from recent memory that was released in that period worthy of a SOTY is Psycho. Any song and ON came out in Winter and are major contenders for SOTY as well. But I’m open to a Song of the Winter idea! It sounds nice, but it would definitely get messy with all these new Song of the Seasons.

So long as MAMA hypes it up and the contenders have big fandoms, it could be big. People would love validation from it after their faves are out of the running for SOTY.
Sistar would have definitely dominated SOTS for 2014-2016. Imagining it makes me sad that there isn’t a Song of the Summer category yet. It would be such a nice touch to an Awards lineup.
