My late-adopter ass is always late to the game with music. But I finally went back the other day and watched Suzy's Yes No Maybe.

    Wow. I love it.

So I started searching the forums for old threads around the time it was released but sh-t... only a couple 4 reply threads and basically a lot of dislike and apathetic shrugging.

Did no one love this release?

For those cool kids that disliked it/ignored it... What gives? All I hear on this forum is b-tching about cute concepts and fuming rants decrying the stale nature of kpop along with wanting cries for more "mature" concepts. Here. I give you Suzy. Woman.

    Anyway, the music video killed.

I'm a huge Wong Kar Wai fan (Chinese film director based out of Hong Kong) and as one user pointed out in one of the threads I saw, it evoked a similar style to his 90s fare. Wong Kar Wai is one of the seminal visual auteurs and whoever did this video made a loving ode to his trademark style. I'm so into it.

Think Fallen Angels, Happy Together, Days of Being Wild, and Chungking Express (My favorite film). Moody reds and languid neon swaying through seedy back alleys and dilapidated locales, shadowed bedrooms haunted by vice, sin and failed dreams, all dripped in dark sensuous romanticism. A visual blending of wanting despair and erotic longing.

Couple the wonderful video with Suzy's beautiful, sensual vocal efforts and you have a killer combo.

So I'll ask again... Where was everyone on this?

(If you loved the track, don't mind this rant. You get a sticker. Here. I like you.)

In what way? (seriously I'm curious)

I think it's hands down better than that Girls Day track everyone's lighting up with love around here.

my thot leader explained it perfectly like what i had in mind

    here it goes

"What could turn a lot of people off this effort is the instrumental, which at times can come off uninspired. I get it. On first listen I thought it was just alright, with a rather bare bones but repetitive production. However, after repeated listens I found that the minimialistic foundation beat worked quite well, the flute-ish sound played intermittently throughout was a great touch, and it knew when to add and subtract tempo. Furthermore, the post-chorus helped to break up potential monotony by switching the format up a bit. but because of that same repetitiveness,“Yes No Maybe” is one of those releases where I understand the people who found it uninteresting."

I loved it! The MV fits the vibe of the song perfectly as well, and is a pleasure to watch. It's probably because it's a steady journey rather than a roller coaster ride that people find it lacking.

I just didn't feel anything from her when she sang it. And the live performances disappointed me, she danced well but her expression didn't fit. Suzy had a nice solo debut, but it could've been better.

I don't find it repetitive personally, at least no more so than is the norm for a given kpop track.

The stripped down minimalist approach fits the aesthetic evoked by the music video in my opinion. It's the kind of minimal, roughly constructed romantic performance you'd expect to find in some swank smoke filled music hall on a dark side street in Hong Kong. A place of late night trysts and unseemly encounters between secretive lovers and exiles, sharply dressed gentlemen trying to drown their troubles in liquor and companionship, and sensual women in want of romance, glamour and escape.

I love it, in fact, I love the whole album, especially 'Pretend'. It's a very simple song(focuses more on her vocals), not too upbeat with huge build ups, which is why I'm guessing it didn't appeal to the larger audience?:whatr:
I found the chorus catchy actually, I can remember it in my head lol. The new girls day song has a more repetitive beat imo

    I cannot understand this.

This song is one of the more interesting kpop tracks I've heard in years.

I've heard people say they want a more mature styling.

They say they don't want cutesy pop songs.

They say they want a less commercial or manufactured sound.

Yet they sleep on a song such as this.

Here is a song that is moody and sexy.

Dark and seedy. A sensuous and romantic lament.

Mature in it's femininity and presentation.

I struggle with responses indicating it's somehow.. what... boring? uninteresting?

I'm just thinking out loud here.

But perhaps some find the seedy aspect and dark tone off-putting?

Also, the track is sensual and erotic but not in that "confident woman taking control of her sexuality and keeping her man in line" kind of way that many prefer (see Girls Day I'll Be Yours).

Maybe these items explain or at least contribute to the song's lack of traction.

Anyway, I'm perhaps beating a dead horse at this point. I'll call it a day lol.

Thanks for the responses and discussion. I've enjoyed hearing them. Good night y'all.

I loved it! I thought both the music and mv was superb.
It gives me electro-house vibes which is really popular in America atm.
(Man, I miss 90's circa HK films, good ol' days.)

I think the fact that it was the opposite of I'll Be Yours in message is why. People don't like fragility and vulnability in the west. In Korea they like the opposite.

i love it!!! and i love the mv too. it reminded me of 90s Chinese movies, just like you said.
but it's not public friendly, that's why it flopped.

I thought it was bland and the wrong route for a solo debut. Plus the song is an inch out of Suzy's vocal range, I can hear her trying and straining to reach.
Did she write the title track herself? If so, good for her taking a step as an artist and painting her own image. If not, I really can't find anything positive to say.

I really like the MV. The song though could do with some improvement. Suzy doesn't have the lower range to handle that song and she's doing a lot of questionable things vocally in it even in the studio version which lowkey bothers me (just lowkey, if the song was great, I'd just ignore it). She just lacks dynamics and tends to focus only on sounding soft and airy which is fine for her public but not really my thing. I'm not really into the chorus but the verses are good. I like the instrumentals and I didn't think it was as bad as some people paint it to be for a solo debut.
