Going through the list it really drives home the fact I've really neglected my Western media consumption the past year.

I've only seen three on the list, Roman J. Israel, Esq., Dunkirk, and Beauty and the Beast.

I thought Dunkirk was technically extraordinary but felt it lacked the narrative push to really allow emotional connection. Beauty and the Beast, while I enjoyed, didn't quite capture the magic of the original animated version (perhaps no live action ever will).

As for Roman J. Israel, Esq.....

I'm a huge Denzel fan. But here are my thoughts.

Roman J. Isreal, Esq. was an extremely flawed film.

It had the makings of a great legal drama, yet never fulfills the promises it set out in its beginnings.

The central character was built up as some behind the scenes lion of the civil rights movement.

However, the film derails midway through and builds to a conclusion that is ultimately unsatisfying.

The film seems to want us to find some greatness in the central character upon its conclusion.

But he is ultimately a tragic figure. One who abandons his previous legacy and falters in his final hours.

The film (and its central character) is not the inspirational endeavor it seems to think it is.

It needed to be rewritten as there was a worthwhile story to be found there.

uhm................I watched the first five minutes of that.
It's a gay movie which is why I wanted to watch it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason why I dropped it is because the main characters were introduced and they were a grown man and a teen and it didn't seem like the kind of movie that would critically show the bad effects of that but rather one that romanticizes relationships with minors which is just a very clear no for me.

So the question is....why the hell would the oscars nominate a movie like that?

I've watched Get out, Three billboards outside of EbbingMissouri, The shape of water, Coco, The Boss Baby, and Baby driver

Most of them, except Baby driver, are a must. Baby driver is very entertaining.

I really like Sally Hawkins in Maudie, another film I recommend, and I really liked her in The shape of water.

Three Billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri is the best for me.

I love Coco, Disney once again pulls the strings of self discovery, family and belonging to a place in one movie now set in Mexico and around the magical tradition of Dia de los Muertos. I loved it.

Oh I also watched Beauty and the Beast and I agree. It will never be at the level of the animated one but I love Gastons sidekick here.

I have not seen it so I can't really comment. I'm not familiar with it other than knowing it is an adaptation of an acclaimed novel.

As to the relationship between an older man and a younger one.

I would suspect that several factors are at play.

First being that that major/minor relationships when they are between two men probably do not register as inappropriate (at least to the same extent) culturally as perhaps a pairing between an older man and a younger woman would.

Second, there is a not quite small portion of the world that does not actually find relationships between adults and near-adults problematic. Especially in certain European literature, they are actually romanticized.

Third, a cursory survey of the critical response suggests there may be other redeeming qualities and themes within the film that perhaps negate or push aside concerns over the appropriateness of the relationship at hand.

Again I haven't seen it so I'm merely giving you my take on it.

I looked it up, the teen is 17, the adult is probably in his fourties.

Yeah I know culturally it's more accepted but...that's just so wrong, the teen probably hasn't even finished highschool yet and he still lives with his parents, he doesn't have a job either. Relationships like that are extremely dangerous and can become very dangerous very quickly regardless of gender.....actually this is set in the 80s so that makes it worse than if it was a heterosexual relationship because the teen would have no support from anyone if the relationship became public, he then would have relied only on the older guy and then if something went wrong he would likely not be accepted back into his parents house, he'd have a hard time getting help from authorities......just, this stuff is dangerous, I don't like when it's romanticized.

    Good perspective,

We need people from certain communities to speak up and add differing opinions like this to the overall conversation.

Shape of Water sounds really interesting to me. You recommend it?

And Three Billboards also sound very intriguing.

I have a penchant for crime dramas.

Did you ever see Hell Or High Water? I wholly recommend it if you want a tense, exhilerating crime genre piece. It also incidentally gives you a window into rural America not too dissimilar than where I'm originally from. Not so poverty stricken (we've been relatively propped up economically by the wheat, cattle, and oil markets), but the sense of place and much of the "rural" details are very similar.

It's okay to watch it but be critical of it too. Way too often dangerous and unhealthy situations are romanticized in media.

Dunkirk was a travesty of a film making.
Poor in every way, characters were weak and boring, felt very lack luster overall.

It's social commentary and it's very fitting for the current political situation in the US.
There is a lot of foreshadowing but personally I kept questioning if what I thought was going to happen was really going to happen, if they would really go that far.
The movie is definitely shocking but I like that, it feels uncensored and real.

Yes, what happens in the movie is disgusting but the movie is very aware of that. It's not supposed to be a happy movie, it's supposed to be commentary on the race issue in the US.
It does go very far but things similar to this definitely happen irl too.
