I want to know how my LGBTQIA community fam handles it if they’re in the closet and their family is homophobic? :(

I’m out whenever I’m not at home. Everyone else knows I’m bisexual. I go to LGBTQIA forums, rallies (pride marches), art workshops, etc. I advocate for gender equality and I write, create artworks, and volunteer whenever I have the time to discuss about gender and sexuality. But whenever I’m at home, I have to drop all that and pretend that my life outside doesn’t exist.

    How do the others survive?

i was never really in the closet so much as i never formally came out, if that makes sense. my mother knew about my "friend" but i never outright said we were banging every chance we got, though she suspected it cause she wasnt stupid. during a fight she brought it up and asked me and i said "yeah, so what?" she knew there was nothing to be done about it and just left it at that. we had bigger problems anyway.

i dont know what your home life is like or how your family will respond, but as long as you wont get kicked out or anything i see no sense in hiding. if they truly love you theyll learn to accept it.

I’ll actually get kicked out. And I’ll get a lot of cussing before I get kicked out. My mom told me when I was 12 (I was 12 jeez) that she would rather see me get pregnant and marry at an early age than become a lesbian. I have an uncle who’s a bit feminine and they use it against him during arguments. Or just with any chance they get. They call him faggot and insane. I’ve used my experiences in my advocacies but I’m ashamed that I would totally shed it off once I step inside my house.

if it'll make life easier i'd just keep it quiet until you move out. after that.. well that's up to you.

my mother and my sister were the only family i had (and my sister always knew and was fine with it) so it honestly wasn't a big concern for me. i only kept it quiet to avoid problems. if my mother had kicked me out over it then i would have accepted it and moved on. if anyone, even family, felt so strongly angered by my sexuality i wouldn't want to know them anyway.

Yeah :( I’m a bit envious that you have a mom who accepted who you are. I mean, I love my family but it gets really suffocating sometimes with the hate comments, the prejudice. I’m sorry. I’m ranting because my mom kept saying “disgusting” and “they’re spreading disease and immorality to children” because she watched that episode in black mirror today that had an lgbt theme.

I think once I move out, I’ll be able to act however I want. I never really considered myself as cisgendered (just that I have to be).

well she's dead now, and it wasn't acceptance out of empathy but rather her simply facing reality. though we sorted out a lot of our problems before she died.

Not really the right person to talk about it since I came out as trans and made a compromise with my parents who said they will love me no matter what

But then again, the rest of my family is probably homophobic and its not rare to hear other kids say homophobic things cause of their parents so i am very much in the closet about being bi and not cis as it could ruin my life :<
Honestly, finding people who can relate to stuff that you feel helps a lot
Talking to lgbt people online and hearing about their happiness in marrying the love of their life despite it costing the people close to them gives me courage
Its hard, yes and will happen for many years to come but I believe in the fact that lgbt+ will be normalised one day and youve already worked a lot towards it ^^

I find comfort in the fact that one day i'll be the parent that fully accepts their child no matter what, even if it might not work out in my life - people like you are making the world a better place for future generations who will be less likely to feel like you have to

Thanks <3 I always love reading and listening to successful LGBT love stories. And I love talking to other community members and have friendly debates or information swapping. I also want to be that parent that’s accepting and whom my child can be comfortable opening up with. Sorry, just curious, are you a transwoman or transman?

I'm bisexual and live in one of the most homophobic countries on earth like if anyone knew about me I'll be hanged it's that bad. but I came out to my bestie who didn't understand me at first or was surprised but she's now one of the lgbt allies and supports them than I do lol. It's really comforting hearing other lgbt people stories and advice
