A revised bill has been put in motion, which will prohibit Korean celebrities with criminal records from appearing on television.

On November 25, Congressman Oh Young Hoon of the Democratic Party of Korea put a revised bill in motion that will prohibit Korean celebrities with criminal records from appearing on television.

The revised bill prohibits broadcasters from casting celebrities with criminal records related to drugs, sexual assault, drinking under the influence, and gambling that has led to confinement, imprisonment, or capital punishment.

If the bill is passed, celebrities with criminal records will no longer be able to return to television after their hiatus.

Under the current law, broadcasters are forbidden from encouraging acts of crime, but many celebrities eventually return to the screen after a period of self-reflection.

Among the celebrities currently active on Korean television, there are quite a few who have a criminal history.

Actor Ju Ji Hoon was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 1-year probation for the use of drugs, and Lee Soo Geun and Tony An were found guilty of gambling.

In addition, BIGBANG‘s T.O.P was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 2-year probation for the use of marijuana, and stars such as S.E.S‘s Shoo, JYJ‘s Park Yoochun, and more have been sentenced to probation for various crimes.

I don't want the bill to pass. Everyone deserves a second chance. Just because they have a criminal records doesn't mean they don't deserve a second chance. It is unfair.

Especially when it is not a big criminal record.

It’s a bit ridiculous to not offer people a second chance unless they’ve done something truly horrible like rape or other physical violence.
Drug and substance abuse can be rehabilitated, but being violent very rarely can.

That's kind of unfair to the ones that truly changed and worked to gain their fame back.

I'm a bit worried what this might do to the ones affected, they might spiral deeper or back into criminal activities due to lack of work. I don't really see this as a solution to anything - I'd understand kids idolizing the ones with criminal background etc, but how many of those casually watching these shows are aware of anyone's record? Even big fans of the show are more likely to research the characters instead of diving deep into an actor's background.
Besides, if they have a record they've probably already been punished. This just feels like a politician's need to do something.

I want some bill that don't give second chance to rape, Ilegal filming-spreading of woman/sexual activity, drug dealer. I think gambling can get another chance because gambling is an activity that give negative impact directly to the perpetrators, and not directly to the general public.
And maybe a bill that talking about hate comment, once people get into investigation they can get the second chance, but after that if they are still making hate comments toward celebrities, they'll not get another chance.
    hmm

Kinda ridiculous like in the end it depends on the circumstances. What if they got criminal records from when they were kid like wonho' case, we all know he has rough childhood. It's not fair for those who truly changed and worked hard. At this point south korea really gonna take their 'utopia' to another level

People can change but doesnt mean there wont be consequences for their past actions. They can start anew elsewhere if their intention/remorse is genuine. Being able to be on TV should have no relevance to the "change".

May seem "unfair" but say if someone got killed because of irresponsible DUI, they would not get a second chance at life either. Now thats unfair.
