It's Strange When You Think About It

Sometimes when I think about it it's strange.

How immersed I am in Korean popular culture.

I barely pay attention to my own country's celebrities and movies and shows.

Barely know who's popular these days. Or the popular shows and movies.

But on the other hand I'm keenly aware of who is popular in Korean pop. List off names of the players and figures. Know all the companies. Keep up with much of the gossip and rumors. The happenings. Dating. Etc.

Similarly I pay close attention to the Korean drama world and its actors and actresses. The big shows. Etc.

But I can barely tell you what's popular in my homeland. Or what's going on in there. Beyond what I sometimes see on Netflix.

The popular culture of a small country in Asia has somehow become my pop culture. My entertainment and celebrity reference.

When I think of famous people of the top of my head. They're all Korean lol.

Sometimes it's strange when I think about it.

How big a part of Korean pop culture has become to my daily life.

What about you? Anyone find themselves in similar situations?

Kpop boys are hotter and cuter than male celebs in the west. So yeah, for me it's only natural.

Not really that strange...before I immigrated to the US I was all about only American celebs. And many people in my country used to be that way. It’s never seen as strange if people obsess over American celebs instead of their own right so why should Korean be any different.

That's true. I didn't mean strange in a bad way.

Just more unexpected. I guess for me.

If you would have told me 15 years ago I'd be immersed in South Korean pop culture and lose track of my own country's I wouldn't have believed it.

I can relate, but my country's media culture is much less massive than America's. In your case, you're probably so overwhelmed by what's largely pop mainstream that it might be more difficult to find what you like, while somewhere in Korea, it's readily available.

Sometimes I worry how much I barely have any sense of national identity through my taste and even some of my behavior - it's like when I meet people irl I can barely talk about media we mutually like, but my country's media and often culture doesn't match who I am too well. The culture is a bit crude and rough, overly traditional, in one sociological book, for example, historians believed we were shaped to be almost like a "warrior" nation in our mentality due to constant historical struggles, but even that works through me sometimes, even if I don't feel like it. You can feel it in our culture and media, the crude and tough humor, no bullshit attitude, and it has grown on me through the years.

Same. I barely keep up with what's popular in my country.

Yes I relate to that. I sometimes struggle to find common ground with acquaintance or people I meet here because I don't have the same base.

Have to find other areas to relate with on.

It's an interesting feeling being friends with some people purely based on personality and not on common interests, it definitely feels different than friendships where your interests are much more mutual. I feel almost like an alien at times, trying to assimilate, but my personality is also much more reserved than the regular person here, so ha, I'm a double outcast :teeheek:

Korea's soft power is increasing and might reach the same level as America's

Then it won't seem unnatural anymore
