I Love And Hate V-Lives. What Should I Do?

    So this V-Live business....

    I mean it's awesome! Sure...

I get to see Tzuyu cook things and be adorable. Watch Chipmunk Nayoung draw Pokemon. Watch Sana eat ice cream like a squirrel. Hell I could spend all day on there drowning in pretty kpop girls.

    But.....

Couldn't this have all been done on Youtube?

I get it... I get... Kpop = Korean. Naver = Korean. I mean that's great you want to keep it in house. Keep that control. Get that cash.

But won't someone please think of the non-Korean peasants like me?

Sure, I'm still happy watching live on your Korean platform while pretty Tzuyu burns Korean soup... It's great.... but in the back of my mind all I can think about is shit I wish this was on YouTube.

I imagine some old entertainment big shot at Naver couldn't figure out how to Like his video on Youtube and in his elderly frustration ordered his peons to go and make him a new video site.

"Build me an inferior video hosting platform" is what he must have said.

So now we got V-Live. The biggest, stupidest exclusive distribution platform for all our kpop favorites.

Now each day when I want to see Chaeyeon in a school uniform I have to search half V-Live to find DIA's Can't Stop. Because I can't favorite that shit.

How am I supposed to exercise my American entitlement properly if I have to watch these things on your Korean site?

Hey Naver... Google already figured this thing out. Why you gotta throw a stick in my bicycle wheel?

    Thoughts on V-Live?

    :D

i've never actually watched stuff on vlive before so i can't really say anything about it tbh
but i know that some western youtubers etc do livestreams on whatever website they stream on and they read the comments/respond to fans and whatnot on that site only, but it's streaming on youtube at the same time to give easier viewing access to people who can't use those sites for whatever reason
it'd be cool if vlive had a facility like that for us losers who can't use korean sites

The only times I watch v-lives in when the videos is in relation to the music release and concerts. Everything else about it is boring to me. I'll probably watch a couple videos if I'm dying from boredom.

I hate and love them too, but not for the same reason. Don't get me wrong, I could stare at my faves all day, but that doesn't mean anything if I don't understand. It's even worse if it's live video so you don't know when it'll end and someone will have the chance to put in subs.

P.S God bless those who actually do that. I salute you.

uhh but even western artists do livestreams on like younow etc....vlive is the korean equivalent to that. If they did it on youtube it wouldnt be live then...the whole point is to do it live. Unless u mean going live on youtube but that would be the same as using Vlive lol ?

They passed a law 2-3 years ago more or less blocking YouTube as major video sharing site in Korea. All major broadcast and entertainment companies agreed to it. Actually not 100% if it was actual law, or just massive co-op by the businesses. Korean content will be shown outside Korea, but inside Korea most Kpop YouTube content is blocked.

It was specifically designed to promote naver and Korean companies as YouTube was seriously eating into their business. It was just before Vlives really launched big time.

Yeah, searching the video I want is a nightmare lol But I like the interface more, youtube gets uglier with each update.

I do use it and enjoy it.

There are downsides to it however.

For starters it's not as robust as YouTube. For instance I can't even favorite a video, do playlists etc. Also, because of the reduced traffic in comparison with YouTube you're much less likely to find subs in your language for all but the most popular videos and artists.

Naver V App is targeted for Koreans not the international audience although V App is the only place you will get English Subs for SME and YGE's MVs if they uploaded to V App as neither companies has subs on their YT channels. Vlive.tv is where you can watch everything online without downloading the APP. The difference is that not all paid content can be assessed through the web, but paid content shouldn't be on YT either. Unlike YT, Vlive.tv has no known retrictions from any country, and we all know how many China based fans there are.

Subs are another issue, most subs on V App are by fans, depending on the fans, you can get subs within hours or never, however no fan subs will be uploaded to an Official Youtube Channel. Only major events are Live Subbed, this depends on the company though.

But the question is why aren't Korean companies using YT if it is supposedly better? Again it goes back to Naver V App being a localised product that also supports local Korean Entertainers. Naver Corporation's 2016 Operating profit for 2016 passed a billion dollars, so there would be confidence in their product over a foreign one.

Seems you're watching the wrong v-lives.

The prospect of seeing pretty Nayoung giggle and draw cute pictures of Pikachu gets me up in the morning.

I love vlives, it keeps me updated and takes off some of the wait inbetween comebacks (It's nice since Gugudan is getting 1 comeback a year.) So even with the slightly clunky website I really don't mind, personally.
