Why are almost half of Japan's millennials still virgins?

Tokyo (CNN) Japanese millennials just aren't having sex.

That's according to a government survey published last week, claiming that 42% of men and 44.2% of women -- almost half of Japan's millennial singles aged between 18 to 34 -- are virgins.

While some prefer it that way, others would like their fortunes to change, with 85.7% of men and 89.3% of women harboring hopes of marriage in the future. The survey did not look at same-sex partners.

Japan's lack of interest in sex is blamed on everything from a stagnant economy to Japanese manga fans favoring fantasy over reality.

    Changing social norms

The latest government survey found that 42 % of men aged between 18 to 34 were still virgins.
Japan has one of the world's lowest birthrates and is home to a severely aging population, with a recent survey finding 34.6 million Japanese aged over 65.

But despite, the government's attempts to boost the number of marriages and children, this year's survey results from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, don't reveal a swerve in the right direction.

Nancy Snow, a professor of public diplomacy from the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, told CNN that changing social and economic norms contributed to the decrease in relationships between men and women.

"Men are making about a third to half of what they used to make during Japan's economic boom years in the 1980s. Some men's sense of self is tied to their salary and they feel threatened by women who are empowering themselves," said Snow.

She explained that the income decrease made men in Japan feel less confident in attracting Japan's increasingly successful class of women, who have become used to earning their own money and putting themselves first.

"While men are going from a cradle to grave trajectory, there are a lot of professional women with disposable incomes, who think that marriage might not just be worth it," said Snow.

    'Solving the virgin problem'

Sexual apathy is extremely troubling for Japan, which has the world's most rapidly aging population and is where citizens are not producing enough children to sustain a healthy economy in the coming years.

There are support groups for men who want to overcome their anxiety of approaching women.
White Hands, a Tokyo-based non-profit offers regular nude art classes, where mostly middle-aged men sketch naked female models. The classes, complete with textbooks, also try to help people feel more comfortable with their sexuality.

Class organizer Shingo Sakatsume, who calls himself a "sex helper," understands how growing interest in the fantasy world of anime is leading single men to choose entertainment over real love and sex.

"By solving the virgin problem, I think we can solve many other problems related to sex," Sakatsume, told CNN in 2015.

Snow asserted that such nude art classes could potentially be more helpful if there were also women on hand to draw naked male models.

"Here's an opportunity to bring men and women together -- they could have wine to break the ice and communicate more," said Snow. "To just make it men looking at a female model perpetuates the problem."

    Is 35 the new 25?

Though the Japanese population is aging at a breakneck speed, Snow said that the latest survey only looked at young people as data sets and didn't take into account their specific stories or circumstances.

"If you're living until you're 90, then putting off having a dating partner till your thirties until you've found yourself might seem rational -- there's a lot more self-exploration going on," said Snow.

'In Love' With a Robot? Why Sex With Machines May 'Cause Psychopathic Disorders'

The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (NIPSSR) surveyed 2,706 men and 2,570 women aged 18-34, and found that, in addition to the rising percentage of young Japanese who have never had sex, nearly 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not currently in a sexual relationship.

“The government won’t be pleased that sexlessness is becoming as Japanese as sumo and sake,” Japan Times reported. “The administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has talked up boosting the birthrate through support for child care, but until the nation bones up on bedroom gymnastics there’ll be no medals to hand out.”

Nearly 90 percent of survey respondents told researchers that they do want to get married “sometime in the future,” but 30 percent said they are not currently looking for a relationship.

“They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality,” said Futoshi Ishii, head of the NIPSSR population dynamics research department. “That’s why people marry later or stay single for life, contributing to the nation’s low birthrate.”

The same study was conducted in 2010. At the time 36.2 percent of men and 38.7 percent of women were reportedly virgins.

they have the term "herbivore" to describe people who are not interested in relationships.. one of my former students told me it's not that they lack interest, it's more like their priority is something else (career, lifestyle, etc.).. but he's a herbivore so maybe he's just being defensive..

having a family and raising kids is really expensive there, though, so not everybody is eager to get married..

I heared that room rents for families are extremly expensive in Tokyo. For a square meter ~$100 USD in the city.
Itself in outer districts (50 km away) you pay ~$2,000 USD for 50 qm appartment (bath + 2 rooms for parents + 2 childs)

yeah, I heard so, too.. I think it's comparatively cheaper to live in countryside but everybody loves to live in the city because it's more convenient.. :whatr:

I would like to ask some of my single students if the article you posted is true but they might be offended.. :teeheek:

It makes sense, some people want to get married much later like in their 30s because of their career, I've actually heard that a lot. And some people feel like when they get married and have kids they lose their sense of freedom so they hold it off till much later.

True. Getting married + starting family means more responsibility and less freedom. But I think this mindset isn't limited to Japan. :eyebrowsr:

I have read a slightly different take on this, but along the same lines.

Japanese teens are so focused on grades, and getting into a good school, that it consumes their life from age 10 or so onward. They do not have the time, or the opportunity, to explore the normal sexual/dating learning curve that most teens in other countries learn. They also don't learn how to properly interact with members of the opposite sex, how to treat women, how to treat men, etc. Therefore, when they get out of college and start a job, their behavioral skills around members of the opposite sex are juvenile at best. They are starting at the 12 yr. old level. Abuse is very common, as is divorce. Relationships can be very odd. They just never had the opportunity to learn how to behave.

So many young Japanese professionals, when viewing this behavior, and their options, simply chose to forego all the (teenage) dating angst, and intimate relationship building, by avoiding it altogether and focusing their energy on non-interactive/non-personal outlets such as anime, gaming, or porn.

When did being a virgin ever become a "problem"?
There's nothing wrong with being a virgin. You're not weird for not having sex.

but women have time limit for curtain things like having kids would be much harder for women when they get over 35 , also many men prefer to marry younger women then older ones , so it all would work in disadvantage for women to wait and put career first .

I see a lot of kpop stars who are 30 but still aren't married, and you can still have kids when you're 40. It just all depends on each individual

having kids in old age is very risky for both the mother and child , also if you had child in your 40's when are you gonna raise them , if you lived till they became legal adult you might be in your 60's and wouldn't even have chance to see their grandchildren cuz they would probability also want to have kids later in their lives .

and kpop idols many of them do have secret relationships , i wouldn't be surprised if they have hidden families and children .

    Okay hoooollldd up
First of all, don't cling to that risky business too much. It gets a bit over pushed, you can have a child at or after 40 no problem. In fact it might be favorable for you and the child because you will have a stable income, rather then someone pregnant at 20.
I don't see why possibly dying before grandchildren is a big deal tbh, it's just other humans.
Also secret families and children ? Maybe men, but females can not hide being pregnant, kinda a dead give away.

Korea is facing a similar situation many millianials are also still virgins.

It all has to do with the culture, work ethic, and school work, and social norms.

It's starting to slowly have similar situations here in the US too.
