I see the term "flops" thrown around everywhere these days and it drives me absolutely nuts. I think of it as a derogatory term for underrated groups, usually used by people who stan popular ones. It's supposed to mean a group that fails or doesn't do as well as they used to, but I feel like people use it just when referring to a less popular group that they just don't like.

What's your definition of the term "flop" in K-Pop and when can it be appropriately used?

don't you dare make any snide comments, you meanie. I see you.

Well if some groups don't sell as much as someone's faves then that makes the group a "flop" to those people. :/

well honestly, twice is a flop that turned out great lol. their debut styling and concept is really bad. ooh aah's mv is very confusing imo. but their following comebacks made up for it. so they got un-floped(?) (is this even a word?)

a flop is the other half of the flip.

but seriously, i don't use this word or like when others do, because it's being used in exchange for failure, when 8/10 there is no actual failure - just something people want to trash, hate on, dislike for sheer fear of their favorite group not doing as well, or pretend is doing bad to somehow boost their personal self esteem.

a failure can have a clear action behind it - a flop? that's just what your opinion leads you to believe.

it seems like now a days, if a group doesn't have a highly active/established online presence internationally/on social media they're a flop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Problem i've seen with people using the word flop is they have no idea what they are talking about whether with the group they are calling a flop or with the industry and tend to use it in a way that just makes them look as stupid as they probably are.

There are groups that flop and calling them a flop is kinda rude, but cuz the word is "trendy" ppl like to use it way to much so basicly anybody that isn't number one can be called a flop nowdays

In general it's just being used as a term to spout hate, cause the actual flop groups aren't ever mentioned since they debut and disband in the matter of days pretty much, and are therefore never heard of here. Like considering the number of debuts a year the groups actually mentioned in the forum is the golden top ten percent or something, the ones that don't instantly die off.

Flop is supposed to mean like you said, but now it has become an inside joke among some famdoms along with the word nugu..
Reveluvs use the word flop when RV achieved something to piss off the haters because at one point RV were called flops by some fandoms.. Similarly, onces use the word declining when Twice achieved something to piss off the haters..
It's all about being salty in the forums..

Different groups have different definitions of flop.

For example, for Lovelyz, anything that doesn't chart in top 100 is a flop.

For TWICE anything that doesn't all-kill is a flop.

For BLACKPINK anything that doesn't say BOOM BOOM DDU DU DDU DU KA POW SMASH is a flop.

Flop is relative term, each group has their own status for flopping

I think the term 'flop' has and is being used to either ridicule another group's sales or as a way to throw shade. I have seen flop used towards groups who it shouldn't be (Bigbang) and towards groups that are just bursting out onto the scene. It seems to me that people measure what a flop is by their own favorite groups' standards. I could be wrong, but that's what I have observed.

"Flop" is relative. I think that any groups the majority of k-pop fans have never heard of could be considered, but if they have any sort of decent following or notoriety, then they haven't "flopped" per se.

When the stans or companies hype the groups to a certain extend and the groups end up failing to reach the heights expected then we could label them as flops?
