Big Bang mostly blew up in 2008 with their hit song Lies, but why do fans now days associate Big Bang and TVXQ together when TVXQ debuted in 2003 and split around the time Big Bang was blowing up?

During the OT5 era of TVXQ, SS501 was largely considered the rival of TVXQ and this comparison makes a lot more since to me than Big Bang.

I think the true rival of BIGBANG was Super Junior tho

People trying to group unproblematic Kings(except for yoochun) with Big bang.

TVXQ has been popular for so long that they are going to be compared to every boy group after them. The same goes to most popular group that have become legend.

Same reason people compare h.o.t and g.o.d even though g.o.d blew up around the same time h.o.t was on their way out.

Tvxq and bigbang are 2nd gen in hindsight

I think the generations have a major flaw, first early 2000s groups like g.o.d should not be the same gen as 90s groups. Also second generation should be split in half. I don't see how groups like Infinite can be considered in the same gen as groups like TVXQ.

TVXQ fans still sometimes use red balloons instead of lightsticks.

YG liked to mediaplay his groups with the biggest names.

It's easy to assume for the sole reason that there wasn't a big fanwar between the two fandoms. some beef here and there but nothing major.

Rivalry - none of course. But the comparisons were huge among non fans that weren't part of the respective fandoms. And history thus repeats itself.

So true but it's because of YG... YG media played Bigbang so much with TVXQ.
in 2004, TVXQ blew up in Korea with their debut song Hug
in 2008, Bigbang blew up in Korea with Haru Haru
in 2008, TVXQ blew up internationally with Mirotic
in 2012 Bigbang blew up internationally with Fantastic Baby

TVXQ's rival had always been SS501

Percentage of votes for the Top Singer/Artist for the year under S. Korea Gallup survey.
The very survey that crowned SNSD as the NGG.

Lol yea surveys are a big reference! /sarcasm off . They surveyed around 1K people tho. I mean, just look at 2009. TVXQ was stil at their peak but they are not on the list although 2PM, who was so-so popular comparedd to TVXQ, SS501, Super Junior etc, are there.

Yeah, it's 1k of random people ranging from the 10s to 50s. It's a pool of people from a bigger pool. Is it accurate? Ofc not. But it will tell the general trend of it. I doubt people in the 50s are even fans of BB. They usually just pick whoever they know or heard of from that long list of acts for that year. Most talked about, most heard of. Just like EXO in 2013 & 2014 after Growl, and seeing how the trend is from 2016 to 2018, the list seems pretty legit.

2PM was generally popular among the public in 2009 and 2010.
That's why 2PM vs Bigbang is the Top 2 showdown the knetz would like to see in 2009 right after Yoo Jae Suk vs Kang Hodong.
    https://sookyeong.wordpress.com/200...-the-top-2-showdown-netizens-wish-to-see/amp/
    [IMG]

TvN News also mentioned 2PM vs Bigbang is the biggest showdown Koreans anticipated in 2010 (even though Bigbang weren't even active as a group in those 2 years. Lol.)
    https://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/2397373.html

And both Suju and TVXQ was in the list too in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
But ofc, if I applied your sarcasm, Bigbang is at no.13 in 2014 and no.8 in 2016 and 2017 (though they weren't exactly active as a group also these 2 years too. No comebacks whatsoever except in Dec'16). So does this means B2ST/EXO/BTS already bigger than Bigbang in those years? hmmm.....ofc not.
It's just shows that those groups are more popular for that year (they did have comebacks and so on).

All I know is that, it's 2019 and koreans still chants to Sunset Glow (a 2008 song) and other Bigbang songs in sports events, festivals/carnivals and etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is a TvN survey among the reporters in terms of who has the relevance among public back in 2009. BigBang never were rivals with TVXQ. The time they hit the nation with Lies, TVXQ already had entire Asia in their palm. The time they hit international popularity is different also. TVXQ hit big with Mirotic in 2008 whereas BigBang hit it in 2012 with Fantastic Baby.

Their popularity in China.... Jaejoong at #1, Yunho at #3.

    Of course, can't forget Japan.

Also, y'all push forward Melon (which was a baby back in 08), but Dosirak was the most widely used platform at the time, and TVXQ's Mirotic was the third most downloaded song there behind Wonder Girls and BigBang (but we can't really forget the album sales, can we?). 500,000 copies.
