Long time lurker, first time poster here. I figured now would be a fitting time to get started.

So I’ve always taken somewhat of an interest in music show wins. Over the years, I’ve seen numerous rankings of artists with the most wins that people have created, but they never seemed quite accurate to me. Specifically, these lists often minimized the accomplishments of older artists, and failed to include data from older music shows.

Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been spending much more time at home. As a result, I’ve had much more free time than usual, and thus decided to build my own database of music show wins, with data reaching all the way back to the 1980s. As far as I know, nothing this comprehensive has been attempted before.

My methodology was basically to incorporate as much data as I could find on Wikipedia. Wins are easy enough to locate for the current crop of music shows, but were much more difficult to uncover for older ones. In fact, many of the older music shows only had Wikipedia articles written in Korean. In addition to having to translate text from hangul, I also had to deal with inconsistent formatting between Wikipedia articles, and thus the raw data had to be manipulated to conform to a standard arrangement. I’ve integrated full or partial data from the following music shows:

    iTV: Hot3 Big10
    JTBC: Music on Top
KBS: Bravo New Generation, Music Bank, Top 10 Songs
KMTV: Decision! Is It Popular 43, Music Triangle, Show Music Tank
    Korea MTV: MTV Countdown
    MBC Music: Show Champion
MBC: Choice Best Popular Songs, Everyone's Popular Songs, Live Music Camp, Live Young Times, Music Camp, Popular Songs Best 50, Show! Music Core, Show Network
Mnet: Gayo Best 27, M Countdown
    NTV: N-Top Inkigayo
    SBS MTV: The Show
SBS: Inkigayo, Star Seoul Star, TV Gayo 20

However, despite cataloguing over 5800 music show wins, I know my database is incomplete. There are a number of older shows for which I simply couldn’t locate complete (or any) information for. I’d appreciate it if anyone could assist with the shows below:

MBC: 무궁화 인기가요 (Mugunghwa Inkigayo) [aired from 1971-10-08 to 1971-12-24]
MBC: 금주의 인기가요 (Geumjuui Inkigayo) [aired from 1972-01-07 to 1975-10-04]
    MBC: 인기가요20 (Inkigayo 20) [aired from 1975-10-11 to 1977-03-31]
MBC: MBC 인기가요제 (MBC Inkigayoje) [aired from 1977-11-05 to 1978-04-09]
MBC: 금주의 인기가요 (Geumjuui Inkigayo) [aired from 1979-04-06 to 1981-03-11]
MBC: 인기가요 퍼레이드 (Inkigayo Parade) [aired from 1981-03-19 to 1981-09-24]
MBC: 내가 뽑은 인기가요 (Naega Ppob-Eun Inkigayo) [aired from 1983-11-04 to 1984-04-27]
KMTV: 쇼 뮤직탱크 (Show Music Tank) [need 2008 winners if they exist]
KMTV: 결정 인기가요 43 (Decision! Is It Popular 43)
    ITV: Hot3 Big10 [aired from 2001-02-05 to 2002-04-07]
Mnet: 가요베스트 27 (Gayo Best 27) [aired from 1995 to 2003]
Mnet: 가요베스트 (Gayo Best) [aired from 2003 to 2004-07-17]
Channel V: 새한 코리안 탑20 (Saehan Korean Top 20)
    NTV: N-top 인기가요 (N-top Inkigayo)
    Korea MTV: 카운트다운 (Countdown)

In any case, here’s the ranking of artists with the most music shows wins, along with the dates of their first and last wins. Only artists with 13 or more wins are listed, and wins are current as of 2020-07-26:

    1. EXO – 107 wins, 6/14/2013 to 12/14/2019 [doesn't include Exo-K's Overdose wins since it's debatable if those should be included]

Yes I'd agree assuming that no one else comes back within that same time frame (they're averaging around 18.5 wins for their last two comebacks), but it appears that BTS is only having one comeback a year, so that's definitely going to slow their progress. I think Twice has a decent shot of matching EXO this week. After that, Twice is probably going to have two comebacks per year, and at maybe 8-10 wins per comeback, I believe the gap will likely be maintained for a while. Now if BTS starts coming back twice a year, then all bets are off.

Ah yes they did, but keep in mind that music show wins for this week are based off data gathered from last week. ;)

I do remember reading something about that. What's the reason behind them coming back so soon? And is there a suspected comeback date in mind?

Cause they can't tour, and not really but people suspect an August/September comeback.

Also I'm surprised EXO only have 107 cauae i thought they had 117 total wins? Is the 117 number including solos and subunit wins then?

Ah thanks for the clarification about BTS.

Haha I was wondering when someone would mention the "EXO with 117" wins thing. Yes, EXO gets to 117 only if you stack subunit wins. On a related note, Girls' Generation also has 117 wins if you include their TTS subunit. Thus, I imagine that the person who declared that EXO has 117 wins while SNSD has only 100 was biased toward EXO. ;)

You're welcome and good to know! That does seem like clear exo bias lol.

This could've helped you a lot.

Edit: Unless you are the creator of this spreadsheet :whatk:

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! That's definitely not my work. It's a similar concept, though with a much smaller data set. For example, that spreadsheet states that Kim Gun-mo has only 7 wins, when in fact he has a whopping 80, including 18 just for his 1995 mega-hit 잘못된 만남 ("Wrong Encounter").

I'm sorry, i thought IU could be top more but she only had 69 wins? Maybe because her physical sales is low, right? Because if only digital than she would be ranked higher

Yep IU has 65 wins, which is very respectable. Obviously she's super strong in terms of digital charting. Her physicals aren't as dominant, though they're still quite solid (she's sold almost a million albums after all). In addition, I'd say her fandom size and YouTube views are of moderate strength. Another thing to note is that IU doesn't promote all that much.

I have been informed EXO does have 117 wins as a group, are you certain of your information?

Hmm what's the source of this information? Can this source provide the full listing of EXO's supposed 117 *full group* wins? Is this source including wins from non-Korean shows perhaps? I'm pretty certain that I didn't somehow miss 17 wins, but if I did, I'll gladly update my database.

Exo promoted overdose as exo-k (sometimes exo) in Korea and they have 10 wins from it and those should be counted I believe. It's not a subunit song.
Exo have 117 wins and I remember it was 117 when they had their 5th obsession win.
