On November 16, the Kyunggido police announced that they have arrested a 30-year-old woman who strangled and killed her own 21-month-old daughter.

According to the police report, the woman gave birth last January and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had been receiving treatment since April.

In the police interview, the woman reportedly stated, "I felt like if I didn't kill my own daughter, someone else would've."

Recent studies have shown that 1 out of 10 new mothers in Korea become depressed after giving birth. However, those who get professional help are rare, and these cases of mothers harming their own babies are alarming the Korean society.

Postpartum depression is no joke especially to those new mother or moms who just gave birth. They always think their babies are monsters. Hopefully S.Korean knows more about this and give help to theese moms. Hopefully woman in S.Korean will educate more about this disease and if they think they get the syndrome, they will get help from their family, friends or love ones.

that's a bit of an over-generalisation. For a lot of women, with PPD, they feel totally overwhelmed over the responsibility and feel like they aren't able to protect their babies. It's not necessarily that they think their babies are monsters but just that they cannot cope and the only way to handle the situation is unfortunately take drastic measures.

It seems like Korea need to step up their public health service to educate and help these women during postnatal period. These women are rarely seeking for professional help is probably due to stigma and because they are uneducated on this topic.

Falsely believing that others want to kill your child is not a symptom of Bipolar disorder.  I wonder if she had those thoughts for a long time (paranoia/schizophrenia) if it was caused by a psychosis. It's very important to mention this because the stigma against people suffering from Bipolar disorder is already pretty bad as it is right now.

not only bipolar but having postpartum depression might be the key factor for her to harm the baby.

More like the birth amplified her problems. I wonder where the baby´s father was...

this is so awful.  I feel so bad for the baby, mother, and people surrounding them.

When my mama... be like "I made you, I certainly can break you". Shit just got REAL!

I am sad for the poor baby, but I also feel bad for the mother, not only was she going through postpartum depression, but she is bipolar, that is a dangerous combination.  I believe  this could have been prevented if mental illness wasn't such a taboo in Korea.

People often don't seek help for mental illnesses because of the stigma in so many countries. Mental health needs to be more discussed.
