A game like 'Pokémon Go' was released in Korea five years ago?

Apparently, an augmented reality game much like 'Pokémon Go' existed in Korea five years ago.

Back in 2011, KT Corporation, South Korea's largest communications/telephone company, had introduced an augmented reality game for mobile devices similar to 'Pokémon Go' called 'Olleh Catch Catch.'

The game involved the running of an app that would use GPS and a map overlay to reveal the locations of 'monsters' on the streets, much like the explosively popular 'Pokémon Go.'

Unfortunately, 'Olleh Catch Catch' didn't catch on and phased out in a year following its launch. It appears it failed to gain traction with the mainstream masses as the game lacked the familiarity and popularity of franchises like Pokémon.

The exact same game ingress was also released years ago, only it was about catching some random monsters. Also by niantic (the creator of pokemon go) but that game failed. To be honest, the pokemon name is really the one that brings this game to where it is now. plus a lot of people know pokemon.

... but those aint pokemons! Honestly I love pokemon go but the concept is not that interesting if it isn't about pokemons. You can catch different kinds, you get to fight and to get more things that are related to the pokemon world.

The game is cool. It's just that it fits the Pokemon theme better

just like everything else in life. pokemon go is like the big 3 in kpop. even though the big 3 groups aren't different or better than other idol groups, because of the brand, they instantly become popular lol.

hm first time i saw a comparison like this and id haver to aree with u!XD

To be honest the game is not that fun. It depends too much on the area and you find people sitting there for hours at the same spot. It's only great because it's pokemon. If it wasn't pokemon I doubt anyone will be sitting out in the wind in the middle of the night like that.

South Korea is so ahead of their time.

The internet speed there is insane! I have 150/150 internet at home and I used to think that was fast. Then I went to Japan and that blew away my internet speed. THEN I went to Korea and the internet there is so crazy. You get signal even in the subway. There's no place in South Korea that has bad internet signal.

u get signal in the subway in sweden too... nothing special :)

Come to the US. There's places outdoors where you can't get signal.

there are a few games like this, the only reason pokemon go is popular is because of the pokemon franchise, nothing more. Imagine digimon GO, you think it would be as popular? No.

Armyinthehouse kingakife Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Digimon isn´t a great exaple to me, maybe becasue where i live it´s common to like it a lot (some like me even more than Pokemo). But i agree with your opinion ^^

AOA_Seolhyunxo kingakife Thursday, July 28, 2016

I don't think Digimon Go is a great example because the main characters don't catch Digimons lol and it suits Pokemon or any theme that has catching something in the anime in it will be pretty popular. Like finding the seven dragonballs except for the fact that there's only 7 dragonballs and nothing more.
