Politician Kim Moo Sung makes racist remark towards Nigerian student

Buzz
An insensitive comment made by Kim Moo Sung, Saenuri Party's delegate and a National Assembly member, towards an Nigerian student studying abroad in Korea has netizens in an uproar.

Kim was part of Saenuri Party's Youth Committee's 'Briquette Delivery of Love' volunteer service, organized by the members of the youth party. While he was interacting with the youth, he had made a tactless remark at 26-year-old Nigerian student Babalola Adekunle Joshua that went, "The coal briquettes and your face are the same color," which was received with much backlash from the public. Realizing the thoughtlessness behind his words, Kim immediately wrote on Facebook, explaining, "It was an inappropriate remark where I didn't consider that a friendly expression could be hurtful."

Regarding what Kim had remarked towards him, Adekunle said in an interview with Focus News, "I didn't know what he had said. The only thing I remember is the word 'face' and even when I understood the meaning [behind what Kim said], it's not a big deal," brushing the incident off his shoulder. Adekunie added, "My dark skin is my pride. I think your inner self is more important than how you look."
