Typing in Hangul (Korean) into Google search yields porn?

Have you ever tried typing hangul, aka the Korean alphabet on Google? The results may just shock you. 


When you search the vowels and consonant sounds to hangul on Google, pictures of half-naked (or nearly naked women)--some of which are suspected to have been taken without permission--fill your screen. 


One Russian student, who is currently studying the Korean language, relayed her disbelief at encountering these lewd photos in an interview with KBS. She said, "When you see the search results, you may end up in a bad mood. Because most people don't know that these are the photos that show up...

A lecturer who teaches English shared similar sentiments as the student, saying, "This is really unbelievable. The students use Google the most and probably search consonants and vowels a lot using it." However, the erotic photos don't only show up when one searches hangul consonant and vowel sounds; they also generate with seemingly innocent words such as 'street' and 'younger sister.' 


Netizens are deducing that unlike domestic search engines, foreign search engines don't filter the terms that are related to 'pornographic material.' 


KBS reported on November 23, "Google Korea stated that because the web pages' content contains the relevant consonants and vowels, they can't prevent these kinds of results from generating. The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) relayed that they can impose restrictions on web pages and sites containing pornographic content but they cannot take issue with the results and algorithms themselves.
