According to various global media outlet reports, a Greek TV sports commentator Dimosthenis Karmiris was fired after making a racist comment during the '2020 Tokyo Olympics'.
The Washington Post reported earlier on July 27 that Karmiris was invited as a guest commentator on Greece's ERT Television for a broadcast of South Korea vs. Greece at the men's singles table tennis preliminaries.
During this preliminary round, South Korea's Jung Young Sik beat Greece's Panagiotis Gionis to move on to the quarterfinals. After Greece's loss, Dimosthenis Karmiris remarked, “Their eyes are narrow so I can’t understand how they can see the ball moving back and forth.”
When criticism toward the racist comment flooded online, ERT announced later that day, “Racist comments have no place on public television. The collaboration between ERT and Dimosthenis Karmiris was terminated today, immediately after the morning show.”
