Mamamoo's Solar Raises Awareness About Female Genital Mutilation

To commemorate International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Mamamoo's Solar took the opportunity to shed some light on this horrific traditional practice. In a video titled 'The most painful traditional ritual for women ... is the worst', Solar explains what Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) means, admitting to having done a lot of research on this topic for the video.

FGM is 'a procedure involving partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia or injury to the female genital organs for non-medical purposes.' It is a procedure that poses life-threatening risks as it is often tasked to the village elders rather than skilled medical professionals.

A procedure as dire as this does not leave the victim unscathed, Solar explains that apart from being very painful, women often suffer infections from poor sanitary conditions, haemorrhaging and obstetric fistula. This is 'chronic leakage of urine/faeces from between the bladder and vagina or bladder and rectum as the body loses its ability to regulate bowel movement.'

According to Unicef Korea, an estimated 2 billion women from 30 countries have undergone FGM and from a 2013 statistical data, countries such as Somalia, Guinea, Eygpt, Mali and other countries of North Africa, an average of over 90% of women have had to undergo FGM.

To conclude the 9-minute video, Solar advises that the people who would like to take action can donate to organizations such as 'World Vision' or 'Plan Korea'. She also stresses that showing support is not a matter of donating or not donating, 'Even doing it in your heart, that's all showing support.'

It's so good of her to have the courage to look into such a confronting topic and talk about it. The horror some of these women go through as a result of something they never had any choice about is unimaginable.

As a parent of a male child I have to take a moment here to also point out that male genital mutilation in the form of circumcision is still widespread in some places for apparent medical reasons, even though it's usually unnecessary and can in some cases come with its own complications. So if you have a son in the future and are not comfortable with having that procedure done, don't feel pressured into it by fears of health issues. Many, many uncircumcised men around the world are just fine and only have to take a bit of extra care with their hygiene.

It’s good she’s speaking out on this abhorrent procedure. Millions of women and girls undergo extreme pain that can have devastating effects both physically and mentally and is unnecessary
