f(x) is back, bringing 11 new tracks your way! Known for their distinct, unique musical style and ability to adopt challenging dance routines, they've dropped their third full-length album following 'Pink Tape.'

The album starts off with the title track "Red Light," which scored an all-kill, slaying the charts at no. 1 on a staggering number of eight music sites - Bugs, Daum, Genie, Melon, Mnet, Olleh Music, Naver Music, and Soribada. I was pumped up when I first heard it. Very electro-house and very reminiscent of their older, pre-2013 output. Stylistically, it reminded me of "NU ABO" with the start-stop machine-like verses. The lyrics ask you to stop and enjoy life. I just say stop and enjoy this track for awhile.

"MILK" is a pleasant listen, starting off with the sounds of a cat, apparently defending its milk. It made me laugh, except for the sound of a gun being cocked. This track is smooth like its namesake. I can imagine a remix of this song being put to Caribbean steel drums. The song is about trying to use milk to cool down after a heated breakup. I love this tune. The repeated refrain "Pour it on my heart, pour it in my heart, my milk, burned" is incredibly catchy.

The third track is "Butterfly." The staccato verses backed by a synth track are pure f(x) with a chorus that seems to float lazily like clouds on a summer day. A nice and skillfully executed piece of soft pop that alternates between catchy and airy. Here the girls compare a lover to a butterfly.

Next up is "Rainbow," mid-tempo and playful. I like the chorus, but Amber's repeated line "kongdak kongdak kongdak kongdak kongdak kongdak Rainbow" was jarring, lending an uneven feel to the song.

"All Night" is velvety and playful in a good way. Teddy Riley is responsible for this one and it shows. Except for the Korean lyrics, "All Night" would not sound out of place on top 40 radio. Funky and upbeat, the whole song works from the verses to the chorus.

For those who do not already know, "Vacance" is French for vacation and is similar to "bakangseu," the word Koreans have adopted to mean the same thing. Not hard to figure out what this track is about. A very upbeat and enjoyable party track.

"Spit it Out" reminds me a lot of "Zig Zag" from 2012's 'Electric Shock.' That's not a problem as I like both these tracks. The song is about spitting out a lover's lies that give one indigestion. Rapid-fire raps, hurried vocals, staccato-style song structure, and electronic breaks combine to make this song incredibly catchy and fun.

Another piece of electro-pop, "Boom Bang Boom" almost appears to dial down the tempo, and the girls weave their vocals nicely in the main verses, but the chorus, "Boom Bang Boom," is a little out of place. Fortunately, it doesn't pop up as often as it could. It's not a bad tune, it's just that the chorus doesn't have enough set up to it and is too sudden for my taste. The lyrics speak of standing up for yourself and being confident.

"Dracula" is uptempo with staccato vocals, like we've come to expect and love from f(x), married together skillfully with silky harmonies while Amber belts out verses in between. An odd choice for summer, this song properly belongs on a Halloween party mixtape. That is easily overlooked for this is a standout track.

The 10th song, "Summer Lover," starts out laid-back, but when they reach the chorus they belt it out. This is pure K-Pop, people, from the catchy beat to the repeated lyrics. And I like it. I can't tell you why, but it is a nice fit to this album.

The final song is "Paper Heart," an easy-going mid-tempo track with very pretty parts and a locomotive-like chugging beat. Beginning with a ukulele or banjo, the song takes on an ethereal quality as it progresses. As you might expect, the girl is asking her lover to be careful with her heart, delicate like paper. Hook-filled and accomplished, it's a great ending song to a great album.

In case you couldn't tell, I enjoyed this album a lot. Some of the songs remind me of their earlier, more experimental albums, which is a great thing.  'Pink Tape' was not to my liking, seeming too generic and trying to be more accessible, and they dumbed down their dance moves for the single "Rum Pum Pum." As a techno fan, I can definitely suggest this album to anyone who wants a lot of synth to their K-Pop.

Recommended tracks: "Red Light," "Dracula," "All Night," "Spit it Out."

MV REVIEW

By the time this article was being written up, the video for "Red Light" racked up 4.5 million views and had 2 million views on its first day out. Apparently there's been some controversy surrounding it from accusations of Bible burning to the song itself getting banned from play by KBS until the word "Caterpillar" was changed, Caterpillar being the name of a company that manufactures mining equipment, construction machines, and locomotive engines.

The girls have gone for a darker image with this MV. The video evidently takes place inside an airport hangar or something similar. Darkened sets, light streaming through windows, various outfits, and black & white scenes are interspersed with color. According to press releases, Krystal was tired of looking pretty, and so they deliberately shot for less colorful and cute imagery.

While the dance moves are reminiscent of "Rum Pum Pum," the video itself has a very different feel. Some of the outfits are of a military-sexy cut, similar to 4minute's "I My Me Mine." It lends the girls a very different image, and it seems to work here. They also smile a great deal less than in MVs like "Hot Summer," giving the video a more serious air.

I'm not sure what the phone, the burning book, or the heterochromian cat have to do with anything, but they add to the dynamic environment. The abrupt cuts, costume changes, and strange symbolic imagery help energize this video. In a strange way, it reminds me of a darker, more somber "Electric Shock." I have to give kudos to the directors. It might be called "Red Light" but there's no stopping as I've watched this every day, multiple times a day since its release and I haven't tired of it yet.  Maybe it's the tune itself.

Why does this not have a higher rating? It's beautiful, and f(x) was definitely in their element.

I really loved Paper Heart the most, though. I love the low drum beating in the background, it kind of reminds me of Celtic music or something haha

All Night simply rocked it whether watching or just listening. All the girls got to show their singing and Luna really opens up on this tune. I'll bet I've given the vid a thousand hits myself. A perfect tune for f(x). Looks like Vic is giving Sulli a run for her money in the "visuals" category here....

Really? I thought that Red Light was absolutely fantastic, but was a little less experimental than Pink Tape.
Pink Tape had much more variety when it came to genres and tempo. The first time I listened to Pink Tape I thought it was very disjointed and weird and was definitely not catering to the masses (but eventually I fell in love with it).
Most songs on this album tend to stick with f(x)'s signature electro pop sound. I'm not complaining because I adore it :D But that's my opinion.
I just love how unique f(x)'s sound is compared to the rest of SM (and the rest of the kpop world tbh). One of my favourite albums this year so far.

"Red Light" 's lyrics represent a competitive world that rushes straight into the wall, that's why we need a Red Light to stop the destruction of humanity. "Caterpillar" is mentioned in the lyrics because it's a famous USA brand of industrial construction which are used to destroy mainly the nature and all the ecosystem. We need this "red light" to realize the danger we feel all, but we must find the "blue light", the solution. I love how the video clip shows a lot of symbolism : the reign of technology (robots), the destruction of the knowledge of the past (the burned book), the war, the conflict, anarchism (black cat) etc. The melody is destabilizing and gives meaning to the lyrics : the song exemplifies the tone of the lyrics, the spoken words give a more powerful effect (ex: when they say "Because otherwise you would become a witness who will be remove", "This is the reality, listen to my voice", "this is a nightmare". In the instrumental we have a mixture of a sound of a needle of a clock (time is short), the sound of steps (a human army) and the sound of alarm sirens in the chorus (danger). I love how deep is the concept of the comeback of F(x), I'm proud of SM production. They really managed to renew the Kpop in a more innovative and experimental way.

I honestly attached to the album. And I liked Amber's part in Rainbow. Maybe that's only me? Then again I like House and Trap music. This definitely deviated from the mainstream and I'm impressed that f(x) took such bold steps and made an album that was steeped in contemporary sounds. Bravo f(x) for not being "overtly sexual" which is a desperate cry that tells me "I'm not popular, I have to think of something"! Thank you f(x) for not creating a generic love song as your title and for getting these K-poppers contemplating and thinking. Thank you SM for the visuals and editing, and no, not a poorly created boxed set. Thank you f(x) for executing a darker image of yourselves, for giving us a more "real" you, and expressing your talents more. Amber, thank you for Summer Lover and Paper Heart, you seriously know how to make some good music.

I look forward to their next quality album.

Rainbow is my favourite song on the album. I love f(x) because they were created to put out strange and different music from the mainstream sounds of SMs other girl group GG. To me f(x) was at their worst when they put out Pinnochio and Electrik Shock, those were so mainstream they should have been GG songs or a new SM groups songs, they didn't f(x) at all. I'm glad after those two they went back to their roots, effin loved Rum Pumx3 and now Red Light and Rainbow are MY HOT JAMS.

I was quite impressed with this album. I've never really been a fan of f(x) with the exception of few songs but I'm loving this album. Love Rainbow and I guess I'm one of the few people that liked Red Light. Also, Luna was giving life with that blue hair in the MV.

SM might underrate f(x) so much but they give f(x) the best albums.  I LOVED every track, except for Summer Lover and Paper Hearts, which were too generic for my taste.

Kpop should learn that album that has 10-12 tracks should have at least 3 singles from it, I hate how Kpop (except YG) only releases one single from an album, because there are usually amazing songs from albums and it's so unfair for only a single track to get all the attention.

Their concept was beyond amazing. Everything was so pretty, the angles, the filters OMG I can't. Probably one of my favourite concepts in all of kpop history.

<Red Light> an addictive album~ Yes, all 11 songs, are just like 'drugs' which slowly captures your mind, to listen to it non-stop, one after another…Not being biased, it's a highly recommended Kpop album that you will thumb up for these five girls, f(x)!!   <Red Light> is an album that is not entirely very kpop style~ I'm not into those 'noisy', very techno, heavy songs~ So, unique f(x) shows me how a kpop group album can be like~ 11 songs, with the hit song, Red Light MV receiving 5 Millions plus views since it first released... I simply love all the songs! Well, "Paper Heart" capture my heart completely in the end as my most favourite~ The best is to listen with earphones so that you can listen carefully, their awesome music with the fives' unique vocals~ From debut till now, I believe the girls put in a lot of efforts to train their vocals! They r a group which can harmonies perfectly, no doubt for their LIVE now~ I just hope to see more supports given to f(x) as it is not easy to come back once a year with a full-length album this time. From their individual teasers to group teaser to release of MV till album release and the comeback stage performance, if you see the past comeback and now, you will see how much efforts are put to let them comeback with a different f(x) since all the members are now more matured so that they can try a different concept for their album. Indeed, this change really give many people n fans huge surprise. Maybe there are some negative remarks, I still see many supportive views/opinions on them. They are a very unique kpop girlgroup as they really use their talents and not the sexy/sweet concept to win the hearts of many fans... No offense.... I just want to voice out for f(x) as I really admire and adore them for being genuine and shows the sincerity to everyone. f(Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli & Krystal), fighting!!! Hope to see you girls having the very first solo f(x) concert soon!! You all deserve the solo concert!
