SHINee 'Everybody'

There are few - if any- pop groups, Korean or not, that can touch or even come close to SHINee's technical abilities. With what are widely regarded as some of the best live vocals and some of the most challenging and most perfectly executed live choreography in the business, they really are on another level when it comes to professionalism and showmanship. Listening to a SHINee album or watching one of their performances is like going to a ballet- technical perfection is the aim, you know exactly what you're coming into, but there's still always that WOW factor of "I can't believe humans are capable of doing that."

SEE ALSO: Former US president Obama mentions SHINee in his speech at 'The 8th Asian Leadership Conference'

That said, SHINee is a pop group. As high as their skill level is, they run the risk of appearing cold or distant by being too unattainably perfect at what they do. We saw this issue with Part I of the 'Dream Girl' albums- the package was airtight, but the product felt a little too sterile. Part II successfully warmed things up by taking darker, grittier, and more sentimental turns, bringing us skill + personality, which is a killer combo for SHINee.

While the entirety of 'Everybody' is a showcase of all-around technical brilliance, it feels like a bit of a step backwards from 'Dream Girl: Part II'- it's almost too perfect and robotic. This is a tough critique to give, because how do you tell someone that they're too good? It sounds like a sappy it's-not-you-it's-me break-up line. The problem here, however, isn't that the skill level is too high, but that the material lacks personality. SHINee and their songwriters need to make sure to include and promote songs on their albums that have character and personality and life to them so that SHINee doesn't come off as unrelatable and cold as the mechanical dancing machines they portray in their video.

PS - I watched Key and Eunji on 'We Got Married' - can someone please give them a show to host together? They're hilarious!

One can always count on SHINee (And their supporting SM staff) to entertain us with their amazing vocals, dance skills and humour. 2013 has been a very... SHINee year, if I may put it in that way.
Starting with Dream Girl, which had a very creative MV ( as per SM standards atleast), a crazily catchy tune, crazy floral and table cloth print clothes which only SHINee pulls off like a boss, and a pretty decent dance routine. The Triple Crown win was very well-deserved, if you ask me. As for the songs in the album, they screamed of SHINee. It had a very characteristic SHINee feel to it.

Then came Why So Serious and their second album. I hate saying this but Why So Serious, though not a bad song, but definitely not one of SHINee's best songs, and Jonghyun's absence felt really strong. I mean, SHINee's a 5-member group, not a 4-member group. I was sure as hell disappointed with Why So Serious but THEN I heard the album songs, AND I KID YOU NOT, EVERY FREAKING ONE OF THE SONGS WAS AMAZING. There was the creepy but entrancing Orgel, the sexy and mature Evil and Nightmare, the upbeat tunes of Medusa I and Excuse Me Miss. I felt if the title track was chosen as either Orgel or Evil, it would have done complete justice to the concept of the second Misconceptions album but SM does go a bit crazy sometimes. In comparison with to the other album songs, Why So Serious seemed a bit dull.

Misconceptions Of Us hardly got any promotion even though it had two of the most eargasmic songs ever, namely Better Off and Selene 6.23.

And then, SHINee came back with Everybody! Tbh, after the slightly dull experience of Why So Serious, I was absolutely overwhelmed with fangirl ;emotions when I watched the MV of Everybody and heard the song. I am seeing people comparing Symptoms and Everybody, but the songs are two completely different genres! Symptoms is this sensual - albeit a bit sad- ;R&B track written by our very own Kim Jonghyun (God bless this boy!) and composed absolutely BEAUTIFULLY by the production staff, and the accompanying dance to it is killer, and what happens when you combine the song, the singers, and the dance? Mass murder.

Hahahahaha anyway, since this is an album review, I'll just talk about the songs.

1) Everybody :-

Contrary to what a LOT of people are feeling about the title track, I actually loved it the moment I heard it and I still do. I mean, the song's catchy, has an amazing chorus and a killer choreography, pretty much everything I've been wanting from SHINee after Why So Serious and yeah, I love it. Yes, it isn't an R&B song, it isn't like their previous songs, it isn't like SHINee ( Pshaw! SHINee has so many styles, they probably qualify for the "SHINee style" genre! I mean, every time they have a come back, they're all like "Oh so this time we're trying out a new style--" and blah blah blah and I'm all like "OH SHUT UP YOU GUYS HAVE TOO MANY STYLES TO SPEAK OF ANYWAY) . But I wonder, if it was like their previous songs, wouldn't you complain that it's just like so and so song of theirs? Anyway, difference of opinion probably, I just like this song lolololol.
I am actually in love with the lyrics of the song because firstly, it has a very fantasy-like Pied Piper feel to it. Secondly, it doesn't talk about love. I don't have anything against love ( I LOVE ANYTHING ROMANTIC AND FLUFFY) but it's good they tried out something different.
The toy soldier feel, the masks, etc, it all makes sense if you read the lyrics carefully.
; ; ;I'm glad this song doesn't have a rap and instead of that EVERYBODY sang, and so did Choi Minho! Four of them got a go at the high notes and I'm happy that SM is letting each of them showcase their vocal skills. Even though the song is pretty dubsteppy (Yes, I know the genre's Complextro), it doesn't over their fantastic singing ability.

All in all, I'm really pleased with the song.
; ; ;

2)Close the Door :-

;The moment I heard this song in the medley, I was floored and I was sure it'd become one of my favourite songs. This song is beautiful, emphasis on the word BEAUTIFUL. Yes, areumdawo. SHINee always kills these ballad-type songs (It is a ballad right? ). A long moment of appreciation for the damn amazing harmonisation and Jinki boy's sexy English. The song has such an amazing flow to it and the lyrics, damn, the lyrics. The amount of emotions in this song is too freaking high.
Idk why but this song has this really French/Italian feel to it, or maybe a Venetian feel to it. Idk why. Like, I feel this song could be included in Nodame Cantabile anime series and be totally IN place.
Probably the violin in it.

3) Colourful :-

;OMG THIS SONG SCREAMS SHINee (atleast for me). Even if it wasn't SHINee's song and some other artist sang it, somewhere, a Shawol would say, "Wow! It has such a SHINee feel to it!"
If you ask me, the song has a really "magical" and "colourful" feel to it and gives off a a very Jpop-ish feel ( WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOVE).
I think the USP of this song is that it can lift your mood. You are bound to feel happy after listening to this song. ;

4) Destination :-
This song is crazy okay, crazy in a good way. It's so powerful and dynamic! ;
This would sound so crazily amazing at a concert, with all the Shawols fanchanting the "Na na na na" part and waving their pearlescent aqua glowsticks. Yeah yeah, I know, I'm swaying away from the topic.
Plus it's so meaningful. It doesn't talk about love, but it's about the hardships which can confuse us and we might not be sure whether we'll be able to reach our destination or not.
This song has one of the best Minho raps ever.
Damn amazing if you ask me.

5) One Minute Back :-
This song is scarily addictive. The beats, the arrangement, music, damn, everything is so.... different! Like, it doesn't sound like any of the mainstream kpop which I've heard. ;
When I first heard the song, I didn't really like it too much ( Don't kill me! ) but the second time I heard it, I became obsessed with it. ;

6) Queen of New York :-
;This song took a LOT of time to grow on me. I think the lyrics of the song are really cool, and has a bit of a country feel to it. Nam sayin'? Like, "I was ridin' my tractor, and out in the fields, plucking a lone daisy, I saw a purty little girl, and I think it was love at first sight"..... OKAY FINE I'll STOP. ;

7) SYMPTOMS:-
HANDS DOWN THE BEST FREAKING BEST SONG IN THIS ALBUM AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST SHINee SONGS OF THE YEAR.
;ENOUGH SAID.

So yeah, that's what I feel about this album.
^_^
Peace out yo!
