Wonder Girls, Se7en and BoA

NYC's local news station NY1 has been running a promo for their upcoming Asian Heritage Week segment, in which they will air interviews with the Wonder Girls, Se7en and Utada!

I was able to briefly catch up with Lewis Dodley (Evening Anchor NY1) at Se7en's NYC Single Release Party at Circle Nightclub, where we discussed which Asian artist would break through first in the US Market. I won't reveal where we left off, but take our poll below, who do you think will break through first? Wonder Girls, BoA, Utada, Se7en, or Crown J?!?!

Which Asian artist do you think will break through first?

i think the wonder girls’ catchy beats and addictive dances are the way to go.

as long as they all break through, its all good!! WONDER GIRLS, SE7EN, FLYBOY ENT, BoA!!

@45 ... CROWN J ROCKS

ehsna_wonder_fan's avatar

@45. Yeah. Wonder Girls would be the next Spice Girls. I HOPE.

I chose Utada. My vote may be a little biased, since I’m a fan, but she aside from Crown J is the most fluent in english and has been getting a lot of publicity.
BoA is second, she has some alright dance tracks, which can help make her popular.

I’m not sure why Wonder Girls are even debuting right now, since from the english interviews I’ve watched of theirs, they are the worst off in english ability.

Se7en has been taking too long to debut, I don’t know how well he will do.

Samaher's avatar

None have a chance lol jk I dont know maybe Se7en or Utada no clue lol

jensterx3's avatar

BoA of course.

I personally have the most faith in Utada and Crown J. They’re both fluent in English, and have lived here. I think Americans will favor that.

I really don’t think the Wonder Girls’ concept will fly here, though.

WELL, I’m not sure who will break, through, if any.
WG - definitely not because their a girl group who can’t speak English, nor sing
Se7en/Crown J - probably not because their ‘hiphop’ is nothing new
BoA - maybe, with the right promotions

I voted for Utada because her song/voice/style are my favorite out of these singers.
Her songs are great, and her English is nearly flawless.

YBDong's avatar

Utada for sure.

superrtard's avatar

Utada but i’m pretty confident that if Se7en does it properly, unlike how he’s handling himself nowadays, he would have a damn good chance as well.

As much as i’d hate to say it, Crown J may even be succesful. I don’t think the US is ready for Wondergirls. I reckon it was a bad move for them.

Oh another thing, out of all of these choices, BoA has the worst English speaking skills. I tried to see what you meant about WGs bad English, and from what I could tell, it seems that their pronunciation is fine, but their vocabulary is limited. Since they are younger, they should be able to adapt faster to the language, if not, heck when you sing in English sometimes the accent sounds alright. LOL

for a fan i want Wonder Girls to be the first one, but i think BoA or Utada will break through first.

NONE. No one is playing their songs on the radio OR on TV.
No one will know who the heck they are.
I HATE Wonder Girls. But i’m buying their album like x863969.
Supporting ALL Asian Artists.
Screw Rihanna & Lady GaGa

MOARStrawberry's avatar

I think that America has been dying for something as fresh as the Wonder Girls.  Acts like Lady GaGa prove that we’re still open to originality and a bit of craziness.  If this were 2006 and GaGa were trying to debut, nobody would have believed in her or taken her seriously.  Now look.
America is probably ready for the Wonder Girls, but the fans who have already been paying attention won’t think so.  I think they have to play their cards right, and get on national television, then things will go great.  JYP has money…just save 2PM a few shows or something, and use that cost to push WG.  They can do this.  They will.

IceBreaker's avatar

definitely BoA

harman101's avatar

i thought boa broke through already?
well wish them all gud luck!

MOARStrawberry's avatar

harman101, nobody has ‘broke through.’  Many have tried to, and the one closest to actual success (not just “number 1” on some obscure chart nobody follows) is Utada.  BoA needs much better marketing strategies than she’s been given, and she needs to focus - stop catering to Japan for half a damn second.  If father SM didn’t have ADHD things might have worked out better.

i say BoA. all i hear is BoA when i enter clothing stores these days

i love my kpop but i`m voting for Utada .
she`s had more exposure in america ,
so she`s slightly ahead , but hey .. who knows ?
i can see BoA making it too , but se7en ,
i`m not exactly sure about him .. i didn`t really like girls . :/
wondergirls .. err , i don`t think so .. not yet at least .
actually they haven`t released anything yet , so i can`t really say anything

pixi3stik's avatar

SEVEN, BOA AND CROWN J SUFFER FROM BEING UNORIGINAL. wONDERGIRLS WILL AT LEAST BE FRESH and target the younger market, which is quick to jump on board with wondergirl esque pop ness

MOARStrawberry's avatar

Partially agreed with pixi3stik.

Somebody needs to whore the hell out of Wonder Girls to radiostations, every form of MTV, get them on TV shows, etc…

I do agree teens would jump on WG.

America is starting to be fun again.

The thing about Utada is… she’s always screwing up somewhere. To the point where I think she’s just messing around, just wanting to release whatever creativity she knows won’t fly in Japan. I mean, if I had as much money as her, I’d do the same. She’s just not putting that extra effort to really win fans in America. Her promotions, the way the album was done and packaged (cuz the songs are great in my opinion), just everything about the album besides the songs is so off. Not to mention her promoting is weak.
Se7en, he’s just not consistent. But he definitely is getting better and I’m so happy about that. I definitely hope to see more. BoA’s been quiet, but when everything was going down, she constantly had interviews and went to clubs and radios.
Crown J… eh, no comment.
Wonder Girls… I think the POP girl group thing is long gone in America. Unless they can come out with club music or R&B, I don’t see much happening for them. So like I said, I love WG but only in Korea.

I’m betting on utada.
she’s been the closest to “breaking through”.
she got to #4 on hot dance club play on the billboard charts. and as #70 said, she’s had more exposure in the US. she also has a major advantage since she was born in the US.
boa and se7en haven’t gotten on any charts and they still need to work on their english, but I’ll put boa ahead of se7en because she has an album out, 2mvs and some of her songs are actually pretty good.
and as for the wonder girls, I’ve heard nothing about them.

lightofscorpio's avatar

UTADA ALREADY IS GETTING PLAYED AND REQUESTED ON THE RADIO….....
so dont compare her to the rest of these who dont get radio play.

Daikirai's avatar

Never heard of NY1..

Utada has already been played on the radio… =/
BoA has had several performances around the country..
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for WG and Se7en :[  and definitely not Crown J, who has barely been promoted to NON-fans.. us fans already know about him X.x;

I hope that they can all really make themselves known to people who aren’t already fans.

I’ve been supporting all these Asian artists, got BoA and Utada’s album but I’m gonna have to say Utada has the best chance, I’ve already heard her song on the radio a couple of times. Her album was top 2 on the Top Pop Albums on iTunes. Her song is climbing the Bill Board chart slowly and steadily. She was also on Good Morning America and Ryan Seacrest’s Show.
This video surprised me, I couldn’t believe how much people went, and it’s not just Asians that went (unlike BoA’s MTV Iggy’s visit): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8skry_utada-hikaru-back-to-us-market_news

As for the others, Wonder Girls needs (I’m hoping) to stop the ‘cute-sy’ act, because we all know that the American audience aren’t into those kind of stuff.
Crown J? Ummm… no, I like the guy but I’m also hoping that he doesn’t overreact the whole ‘Hip-Hop/Rap/Gangsta’ style. Lose the “A!”, kayyy?
Se7en has a shot, it was a good thing collaborating with Lil’ Kim, but is it enough?

Also, to any label workers (JYP, SM, whoever) who think they could use help writing English adaptations of their songs, I will help you.  For free.  No catch.  You don’t even have to pretend I exist when push comes to shove; I only want to do this for the artists having a chance at being successful and relevant with some good, catchy English.  email is .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

I prefer not to hear their genre in US radios…

Wonder Girls “cutesy” LMAO biggest lie in the industry. Sure “Tell Me” and “Ee babo” were on the “cute” side, but their music is from from that. If anyone actually bothers to listen to their other singles besides the ones they promoted. Heck “Irony” was far from being cutsey, yet no one liked that one?

seriously all these artists could be ruling the charts if it weren’t for people not playing their songs.
Actually WG English has improved. Especially Yeeun(if you watch Welcome To Wonderland it’s actually..flawless.) before she sounded like a nail salon lady. Sunmi & Sohee both are actually very good with pronunciation. Yoobin & Yeeun can both talk in conversation with English people, but Yoobin needs to work on pronunciation. Sunye needs the most improvement, i love her (: Plus WG do have catchy songs.
LOL like no one voted for Crown J. Maybe because he’s such a gangster wannabe.
BoA should be topping the charts soon enough. Jjang! FTW.
Utada who? No one goes for people who actually really care about their music.
se7en screw him. parties instead of promoting nice.
America should have things like Music Core, Music Bank & things like that. Every American artist are fucking greedy.
Wonder Girls & BoA FTW.

squ!shy's avatar

deep down i go for BoA as my number 1 choice
but i also feel Wonder Girls and SE7EN can have their chance too
Utada has released her album This is the One
but i don’t feel it has reached much success as BoA with her first album (maybe thats just me and my bias towards BoA… whatev)
i see people saying… Utada for sure but she has been around in America for quite some time now… so where is the change?
no matter what i support all these artists coming into the American market. they need to work hard and promote themselves to the American people, but with fans we can do our best to back them up and support them in whatever they do.
[now Johnny i am truly curious to know the end of that discussion!!!]

well they all have an equal chance ...but im bias ..so SE7EN!

trashstar's avatar

utada. because she’s fluent in english and americans will rip you apart if you speak like boa or the wonder girls and are trying to make it here
plus she composes her own songs

I have New York one channel!  I really can’t say who will make it… -.- I can’t decide T^T

maaya's avatar

Utada had a single debut back in 2004 in the States…...so she’s has technically debuted.
It’s kind of sad in a way cause no matter what Asian artists in the U.S will always be compared to already established artists here.

Best of luck to all of them. We need more Asians representing here!

MOARStrawberry's avatar

Totally agree with 85 in saying that we need stuff like Music Core/etc over here.  And guess what?  We’re getting it (supposedly).  After TRL died out, there seemed to be no really good outlet for music on TV, but it’s coming back.  Simon Fueller, the same guy who invented the American Idol series (which draws an avg 30 million viewers per episode) is preparing a music oriented countdown-and-performance show that will be a huge launching platform for artists of all genres.  It will be like TRL in 1999-2002, except it will last.  There used to be that show that you needed to perform on to have a successful album…that disappeared, and it will come back if Simon Fueller and the TV networks take this seriously.  MTV is done for, but if they get a show like this on a “normal” network like NBC (actually, NBC or ABC would be IDEAL! especially with viewer counts) then all of these artists (and American ones) have much more of a chance than they have had in a while.  Trust me, kids miss these shows.  Music Core/Inkigayo-style stuff would be absolutely perfect over here if executed correctly.

medirin's avatar

I voted for Se7en not because I believe he’ll be the most successful, but because I hope he will be. Fangirling aside, I think Utada is the one most likely to be successful. She’s actually a native English-speaker and she makes decent R&B/pop songs. BoA and Se7en could make it, but they still have the language barrier. Wonder Girls and Crown J have no chance. I don’t think the American public will take them seriously. Then again, Soulja Boy is fairly popular in America, so I’d say it’s anyone’s game.

lol just cause Utada’s on the radio a lot doesn’t mean she’s getting anywhere cause she obviously isn’t. I say BoA even though her english isn’t that great, but i actually liked her album. it doesn’t matter if Utada can speak the best english, obviously it doesn’t matter cause her first album sucked in the US.

Also, Utada gets points for originality.  Writes her own stuff, plays instruments, just overall an original pop artist.  Again, America likes that; look at GaGa.

Also, to clarify, I’m not a huge GaGa fan, but I’m analyzing the current trends and she’s is what’s “in” here.
