Wonder Girls, Se7en and BoA

NYC's local news station NY1 has been running a promo for their upcoming Asian Heritage Week segment, in which they will air interviews with the Wonder Girls, Se7en and Utada!

I was able to briefly catch up with Lewis Dodley (Evening Anchor NY1) at Se7en's NYC Single Release Party at Circle Nightclub, where we discussed which Asian artist would break through first in the US Market. I won't reveal where we left off, but take our poll below, who do you think will break through first? Wonder Girls, BoA, Utada, Se7en, or Crown J?!?!

Which Asian artist do you think will break through first?

@2boa4u. People can say whomever they want to say. And the only reason she’s getting airplay isn’t because she’s signed with Def Jam. It’s because she’s making more of an effort and if her song tanked I’m sure people wouldn’t be requesting it and the radio stations wouldn’t play it either. I support BoA but I wish she would have done a little of everything to show off her full potential. Utada put a little of everything on this album so it should definitely appeal. She is slowly but surely being recognized, and her next single release should definitely be something like Dirty Desire or On and On and make it a fun video. I definitely think UTADA will break some boundaries!

UTADA FTW!

hmm, i love utada’s music, but personally dont think it will break through in the states. its just not what that states are all into right now. se7en, dont know about him. i think i’m going to have to go with the wonder girls, just because they got recognized and became really big in korea only after a short period of time. I’m still rooting for BoA though :( if it were up to me, it would be all of them because i love them all ^_^ minus crown j i dont really know his music that well lol smile

I have to vote for Utada, since I keep hearing her on the radio, I see her promotional posters everywhere, and she’s already broke the top 100 on Billboard.

Actually, I can’t really choose one. I mean, they’re all competing with some really big stars. I mean Se7en and Crown J is competing against like Akon, NeYo, Kanye West,  Eminem[who just came back], etc. While Utada and BoA are competing against Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady GaGa[Yeah, Lady GaGa is like really famous right now], Pink, Keri Hilson, Katy Perry,  etc. Wonder Girls doesn’t have much competition but here are a few: The Pussycat Dolls, Danity Kane[What happened to them?!], The Saturdays[extremely talented girls, but aren’t very famous yet], etc. There aren’t many girl groups in the states. Maybe there is, but I’m not really sure. But, if I had to pick, BoA. She already was on KIIS FM. And she’s even being promoted via Maplestory, which is a extremely popular game. My second would be Utada because she had her song on Kingdom Hearts and she’s very talented also. I like Wonder Girls, but I’m not sure if they’ll succeed in the States or not.

It definitely has to be Utada. I recently heard her song “come back to me” and I’m absolutely in love with it. And she doesn’t have an ascent so when I’m listening to her songs it feels like I’m listening to an English singer not Asian. But I do like BoA as well. However, her english songs don’t really appeal to me.

BoA or se7en definitely they both have american RnB style, utada? too japanese (no offense),WG? mmmm..impossible..n Who da hel* is Crown J?

I hate to say this, but I think SE7EN will break first. I like se7en, but I am a huge BoA fan. BoA’s doing a bit of stuff right now, but SE7EN’s got the advantage. He’s working with Lil Kim,who has a bit more background in the American music industry than Flo Rida, who only worked with BoA on a REMIX. Also, Utada’s been in the American music industry since about…1998, and hasn’t had much progress. Maybe Utada will come out on top. But like I said, SE7EN has the advantage. He’s already had his video on 106 and park, which has coverage on good music..

i luv boa,but her popularity in america is below sea level inspite of massive promotions and appearances,.i was disappoint on here english album, all songs are pop.she should include jazz, gospels, soulrock, contemporaries, urban, new age, world beat etc to make her album versatile.my friends say her album is so boring and the music is forgettable….speaking of charice,i cant wait until fall to just to buy her world debut album.i heard its a mix of different song genries to showcase her vocal versatilities, yes everyone is listening whe she sing and cant wait to buy here album.shes a certified asian diva.yes, she deserve it

You got to be kidding me. WonderGirls over Boa is a joke. Not to mention Utada has a much bigger following then all of them combined. She is at least known here and is backed by a major label being Def Jam Island Records lol.  I would say it is a toss up between Boa and Utada. Although I put my bets on Utada at the moment.  Her album is doing very well considering and has gotten solid reviews overall. Not to mention has gotten some major TV and radio promos which helps. Boa’s Debut on the other hand has been somewhat mixed. Although she is gaining some ground finally with a much needed TV plug thanks to Asuka Kondoh (So You Think You Can Dance.  WonderGirls on the other hand haven’t even been around that long.  What makes them think they can best out Utada which doesn’t have the language barrier and support of a major Record Label.  Not to mention as another post said she is Asian American which people are going to be more likely to support first I think.

Boa might be gaining a stronger following in the Asian community but that isn’t going to get to very far in and of itself. Although Boa from a marketing standpoint might have an advantage. She is an incredible dancer, funny, very likable which will translate well with viewers. Boa is also is very photogenic (sex appeal basically like it or not which does help. Not to mention her English already is quite good in comparison to WG which is not where it needs to be. . Both Utada & Boa have years of experience under their belt in various markets which gives them an advantage. They have been at this long before WonderGirls was even a blip on the radar.  In the end WonderGirls hasn’t even conquered Asia yet and taking on the US market is a bit premature.

utada and especially charice is a major breakthrough in u.s.a.(both of them got positive reviews!)they have a class of their own,not copy cat.their voice has strong character which can drawn attentions to anyone who listen.boa wonder girls se7en has no own distinct voice, vocal styles and their voice is thin and weak.

to succeed in american showbiz?! they need to have back up from influencial showbiz personalities, positive reviews and comments from music entertainment critics, appearance on high rated shows and star studed events.music video and radio appearance is not enough, although it help a little bit…..both utada and boa gain recognition in u.s. because they are pretty, charice is the most succesfull not because shes pretty, she has the voice and she is unique, seven and crown j mmm frozen
conclusion:i vote charice utada and boa-peace

I agree that Utada likely has the best chance as many people have at least heard of her .. Not to mention she is doing a much better job promoting her album which is getting solid reviews.  I also have heard her on da radio and in all the music stores and her CDs are in stock which means she is selling. Boa is nowhere to be found and most retailters haven’t even heard of her and yet they have of Utada. Boa has gotten about zero radio play as well. . Wondergirls are likely to fail as well unless they can pull a rabbit out of their hat.  Their English is nowhere near where it needs to be and really need to bring something new if they have any chance at all of succeeding.
