Wonder Girls plans for America revealed

From 27th June, the Wonder Girls will begin a new chapter in America as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 (American leg), with their last on 22nd August. They will be opening for the Jonas Brothers for 13 of their concerts in 7 cities, so check the schedule for the actual dates. English versions of their Korean hit songs Nobody and Tell Me will also be released soon.

According to a JYP Entertainment representative, "The Wonder Girls had signed with one of Hollywood's top talent agencies, CAA in October 2008. They also inked a contract with Jonas Brothers company, Jonas Group to join them on their concert tour. They will also release the english version of Nobody first followed by Tell Me through digital channels. Their full-length english album will be available in September or October."

Sun and So Hee

With regards to using Nobody as the debut single, the JYP Entertainment representative explained, "Through discussions with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and Jonas Group, they felt that Nobody had an irresistible charm surrounding it. The music and overall feel of the song were perfect plus it helped to accentuate the image of the Wonder Girls very well. Industry critics in America also felt that the retro 80s disco style of Nobody would be particularly refreshing, especially in the American music scene."

Yoo Bin and Yenny

As the producer for the Wonder Girls, JY Park also outlined to the media about his strategy with regards to Asian singers debuting in the European and American music markets. He said, "Formerly, Asian singers would rush to do collaborations with musicians in that country when they enter that market. But that's a grave mistake. We cannot just hand our artistes over to the American-European producers, we have to stand our ground and maintain our own unique flavor. Although the Wonder Girls and I are kinda nervous, we are also contended and excited about this at the same time. This is something that we have planned together for a long time, so I am sure we will not let everyone down. We hope that everyone will continue to show their support for us."

So Hee and Mimi

Before the Wonder Girls, SM Entertainment's BoA and YG Entertainment's Se7en have already make inroads into the American music scene. Everyone is full of anticipation about the Wonder Girls debut next. Meanwhile, continue to stay tuned to AKP for the latest on the Wonder Girls and our exclusive coverage on their debut.

I agree with 35…He’s still using Jonas Brothers Popularity so just HOW is he any different from Se7en using the popularity Lil Kim has?
If he wants to do it all alone and stuff, don’t use the Jonas Brothers, just release the song and see how it’ll go with promotions and stuff, ugh.

Good Luck to the girls though.

@49 There is space for pure Asian singers in America as long as they can make an impact through their talent or whatever. In fact, one of them just cracked the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

I don’t think JYP ever stated that they would be successful in America… if they couldn’t break it in US, at least they tried and I will support them anyway. At first I thought jyp was a bit cocky too but after watching his interview, I’ve changed my attitude towards him…and he’s not that stupid like some of uguys may think he is
@37 - I totally agree

Though I’m not too fond of the Jonas Brothers, the fact that the Wonder Girls will be the opening act for their tour is just huge! This is going to be great exposure for the girls. I am most definitely looking forward to seeing how well they do here and hope for nothing but success for them. I honestly hope that they’ll make it big here. <3

Who would have thought that WG was the first to sign a contract with CAA. But I have faith in JYP and the WG they know what they are doing. But I’m really excited for this… Hope they can make a name for themselves and prove other people wrong. :D WG Hwaiting!

If they’ll fail it would be because of their accents… Sad, but true.

hahah i wish them the best!!! and i think what JYP said was very true… Asian singers shouldn’t come to america and try to debut changing their style of music….. they should just stay the way they are!!!

I am excited yet nervous at this debut in America.
All of what JYP says is fully reasonable
and the talent agency has got it right in regards to the current american music scene

lets all hope for the best~

I can’t wait!!! I wish I could go to the Jonas Brothers tour but I won’t in the in US at that time. It’s always when I’m not here -_- I wish they had the concert in AC, NJ again.

This just shows that JYP is very smart and sensible. I’ll admit I had my doubts that they’d be successful, but this is AMAZING exposure. I hope they have fun, and get the recognition they deserve!! ^^

Not a fan of the Jonas Brothers infact, I have a very strong dislike to them. That being said, WG going on tour with them is huge.

“We cannot just hand our artistes over to the American-European producers, we have to stand our ground and maintain our own unique flavor.”

I agree with this. Others might feel that JYP is too cocky, me too but I think he’s been pretty smart so far as to in regards to WG advancing to America. It’s good that they’re making a english version of Nobody, it’s a damm catchy song and who know it’s America, anything can happen. 1 year down the road, the WG might just be the biggest thing in Hollywood and we’ll all be eating our words.

well,, hard to believe that they ‘re finally making it..
America.. huh.. it should be hard, i’m thinking that Americans will not like the style of the songs..
But since they’re from KOREA~~, i hope they ‘re going to do well!
i afraid they’re going to have failure TT..

Rayn's avatar

well.. JYP is taking a different approach to his marketing strategy and it seems pretty risky. In my opinion it will either go really really good or really really bad. Well for BoA, Se7en, Rain, and Utada they’re doing okay but they’re hardly making a huge impact over at the US market. I think it’s gonna be all or nothing for the wonder girls, good luck to them!

i still dont believe it. I wanna wait till i see jonas brothers say it themselves.
in the back of my mind i wonder what the reception will be. A bunch of 10-17 year old girls are at the concert waiting for the jonas brothers to come out and they see the wondergirls? nobody knows who they are. might be awkward.

Part of me is happy but the other part is pretty worried. WG is a really awesome band and they’re really cute and collaberated with the Jonas Brothers, it’ll be pretty epic. Plus, Jonas are a REALLY huge group and when fans see WG, they’ll either love them… or hate them. Hopefully, there won’t be all that much Asian racism or steriotypes and America will love them… >.<

I love how so many of you are naive enough to think that talent is all it takes in America.

Tavo's avatar

I’m sorry but WG won’t make it far =/. Why did they choose to collaborate with Jonas? Their fans are full of girls…American girls aren’t into cutesy.stuff.

i’m so excited!!!!!

ahh i see all the naysayers and pessimists are back. but yeah i admit, even jyp, the girls, and us fans are nervous about their debut. will america embrace korean pop music? that’s really the big question. you can speculate and hate all you want, but no one knows for sure what’ll happen. i’m just proud that they are doing their best in getting themselves exposed to america. it’s up to america to respond or not.

kc!'s avatar

hmm this is a big stuff for the girls. as it stated in the article CAA and jonas group sign a contract for them and Jonas group wanted them to start the opening for JONAS Brother.  so in some point they are not using Jonas Brother to break through cos they didnt ask for it. The Jonas Group ask them to do so. And Jonas Group even choose what song that it is great for them to use for there debut so that means they are really talented in what so ever. I can’t wait for for them to debut.

Im so proud for the girls. T T (tears of joys)

going to try and support them by going to one of those concerts~

I’m so nervous for them…I hope everything works out for the best..
So CAA signed with Wonder Girls way before signing with Boa.
So apparently WG are the first ones to sign to a big agency. Yeah!
Plus they are signed with Jonas Group. Mad Props to JYP!
GOGOGO WONDER GIRLS!!!!

I really can’t imagine the Wonder Girls with the Jonas Brothers. Still a weird combination. But hey, I’m glad to see that they are doing something. I can’t wait to hear ‘tell me’
