Wonder Girls plans for America revealed

From 27th June, the Wonder Girls will begin a new chapter in America as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 (American leg), with their last on 22nd August. They will be opening for the Jonas Brothers for 13 of their concerts in 7 cities, so check the schedule for the actual dates. English versions of their Korean hit songs Nobody and Tell Me will also be released soon.

According to a JYP Entertainment representative, "The Wonder Girls had signed with one of Hollywood's top talent agencies, CAA in October 2008. They also inked a contract with Jonas Brothers company, Jonas Group to join them on their concert tour. They will also release the english version of Nobody first followed by Tell Me through digital channels. Their full-length english album will be available in September or October."

Sun and So Hee

With regards to using Nobody as the debut single, the JYP Entertainment representative explained, "Through discussions with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and Jonas Group, they felt that Nobody had an irresistible charm surrounding it. The music and overall feel of the song were perfect plus it helped to accentuate the image of the Wonder Girls very well. Industry critics in America also felt that the retro 80s disco style of Nobody would be particularly refreshing, especially in the American music scene."

Yoo Bin and Yenny

As the producer for the Wonder Girls, JY Park also outlined to the media about his strategy with regards to Asian singers debuting in the European and American music markets. He said, "Formerly, Asian singers would rush to do collaborations with musicians in that country when they enter that market. But that's a grave mistake. We cannot just hand our artistes over to the American-European producers, we have to stand our ground and maintain our own unique flavor. Although the Wonder Girls and I are kinda nervous, we are also contended and excited about this at the same time. This is something that we have planned together for a long time, so I am sure we will not let everyone down. We hope that everyone will continue to show their support for us."

So Hee and Mimi

Before the Wonder Girls, SM Entertainment's BoA and YG Entertainment's Se7en have already make inroads into the American music scene. Everyone is full of anticipation about the Wonder Girls debut next. Meanwhile, continue to stay tuned to AKP for the latest on the Wonder Girls and our exclusive coverage on their debut.

I don’t think that JYP is a complete idiot.  He knows what he’s doing when it comes to the music industry, but it’s not easy for anyone to predict how an audience will respond to debuting artists.  At least the Wonder Girls are sticking with the style that they do best.

They are really taking small baby steps on their debut. I admire JYP for that. Slow and steady but it will pay off in the end.

i wish they would take more time to their debuting then just rushing them in….sheesh..they should try to teach them more english and singing because there’s goin to be a lot of criticism towards them…i think jyp is aiming more towards which artist is gonna be the first asian artist to succeed in america…..i seriously feel bad for min g-soul and that other lady…seriously wut were they for??? did they train all those years for nothing?? i mean wonder girls can’t really sing except ye eun and they all can’t speak eng….same with the other companies why don’t any of them use an artist that could speak english? wutever they all suck :p

DAMN!! Wonder Girls sure is gonna make it big. I like JYP’s strategy of not collaborating with American artists just yet. I hope WG can make it even bigger later on. I would really like to see them take US in their hands. YAY!

MOARStrawberry's avatar

Just as planned…Juuuust as planned.  Get these girls on Disneychannel!  This WILL work!  English “Tell me?”  Now I’m really excited.  If they do Irony and So Hot as well, this will be PERFECT.  They can bring the mini-album idea to the USA too!

I have hope.  WG FIGHTING!

I’ll let ya know how the gals do when I go to the Jonas Bros concer this month. *yeah, had to buy em for the little sister so Im going along. Looks like the gals will be on this tour concert in my town. Just checked the schedule. Looks like they also avoided all the redneck towns down south. puhahahahaha! sorry..anyhow..we’ll see how it goes. Im nervous for all the asians trying to go for it but I’ll pray for them at the same time.
WG aja!

MOARStrawberry's avatar

@121 - damn good thing they avoided the rednecks.  It needs to get popular with the good people in the country before they hitch on like the sheep they are.  I can see why WG won’t be in NJ yet.

i’m excited for the Wonder Girls, but too bad they have to tour with those Jonas brothers. since they are the opening act they will definitely get good exposure. they will probably have to sing more than 2 songs in English, i wonder what they will be. i hope you fans that can go & can stand the Jonas’ can take some fan video of the Wonder Girls’ performances.

I think people really don’t get the American mind-set sure they aren’t going to be all over everyone’s bedrooms in posters but I personally think our music tastes are wide and vary. Sure we might not sit down and listen to any particular artist non-stop and most people like to try new and different things with their music tastes. And Opening for the Jonas Brothers is an amazing idea since the age group of their fans is young they won’t have any racist issues to deal with. Plus those idiots usually eat up shit anyway so WG will be new and exciting. Infact I’ve already heard tell me and nobody played at my school on numerous occasions and even my friends that do have a problem with too much asian stuff like their music. So whatever happens will happen, but it’s not going to be nearly as bad as people are going to think. The only way they can go is up.

Retro music is in btw for alternative listeners. As is multi-language rap.

ahhh *feels anxious*. i want them to do well, and i think opening for the jonas brothers is gonna be huge. Just the other day i was playing so hot of my phone and another one of my friends was like “omg what is this song, i really like it” - and she is a jonas brother mega fan- so i’d say the potential is definitely there. fingers crossed ^^

It is common sense. Those who like the Jonas Brothers like the sound of a white voice a lot and asians sound white. Forget what anyone looks like or what the accent is, there are a lot of white accents after all. If all you hear is the voice and music, asians fall into the same group as white vocalists, so of course if a very large group of US fans in love with their sound it will most likely be the fans of white singing groups that are already popular in the US. You go where the market is.

@121 and 122
June 15, 2009
Jonas Brothers   Cowboys Stadium
Dallas, TX   -
June 20, 2009
Jonas Brothers   Bank of Oklahoma Center
Tulsa, OK   -
Stadium Of Fire: Jonas Brothers     LaVell Edwards
Provo, UT
July 4, 2009

Maybe all you did was a quick scan to see if Atlanta was listed, where you claim the bad people are. Maybe you are just jealous because no one there wanted to be bad with you if you visited, and if you never have, then you don’t know what you are talking about.

euh. jonas brothers is the best JYP can get? well, it’s funny he said ‘stand on our ground’ while he is tailing jonas brothers fame in the first place. gee. just admit it, old man, your artists are not talented enough to collaborate with US musicians. period. of all those asian singers who come to debut in US, wg has the weakest talent.
