Wonder Girls plans for America revealed

From 27th June, the Wonder Girls will begin a new chapter in America as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 (American leg), with their last on 22nd August. They will be opening for the Jonas Brothers for 13 of their concerts in 7 cities, so check the schedule for the actual dates. English versions of their Korean hit songs Nobody and Tell Me will also be released soon.

According to a JYP Entertainment representative, "The Wonder Girls had signed with one of Hollywood's top talent agencies, CAA in October 2008. They also inked a contract with Jonas Brothers company, Jonas Group to join them on their concert tour. They will also release the english version of Nobody first followed by Tell Me through digital channels. Their full-length english album will be available in September or October."

Sun and So Hee

With regards to using Nobody as the debut single, the JYP Entertainment representative explained, "Through discussions with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and Jonas Group, they felt that Nobody had an irresistible charm surrounding it. The music and overall feel of the song were perfect plus it helped to accentuate the image of the Wonder Girls very well. Industry critics in America also felt that the retro 80s disco style of Nobody would be particularly refreshing, especially in the American music scene."

Yoo Bin and Yenny

As the producer for the Wonder Girls, JY Park also outlined to the media about his strategy with regards to Asian singers debuting in the European and American music markets. He said, "Formerly, Asian singers would rush to do collaborations with musicians in that country when they enter that market. But that's a grave mistake. We cannot just hand our artistes over to the American-European producers, we have to stand our ground and maintain our own unique flavor. Although the Wonder Girls and I are kinda nervous, we are also contended and excited about this at the same time. This is something that we have planned together for a long time, so I am sure we will not let everyone down. We hope that everyone will continue to show their support for us."

So Hee and Mimi

Before the Wonder Girls, SM Entertainment's BoA and YG Entertainment's Se7en have already make inroads into the American music scene. Everyone is full of anticipation about the Wonder Girls debut next. Meanwhile, continue to stay tuned to AKP for the latest on the Wonder Girls and our exclusive coverage on their debut.

I’m anxious about their debut - fingers crossed that Nobody & Tell Me sound okay in English! Either way though, a tour with Jonas Brothers is HUGE. Congrats to them & best of luck! x)

The album sounds exciting, but I guess this makes it official that WG won’t be making a comeback in Korea this year… :(

At first I though Asian singers don’t really have a bright future in the American industry but after the Wonder Girls were confirmed to tour with Jonas Brothers… I’m now having second thoughts and I think with just the right moves they could really make it big! I’m looking forward to the English version of Nobody and Tell Me.. now I can sing along fully to their songs… WG hwaiting!!! Hope they can make it really BIG!! <33

is this really true? because i don’t think so. in fact jonas brothers had a facebook livechat this morning and they talked about their new album and tour BUT they never mentioned wondergirls or any other asian acts as their opening. in FACT it was the band HONOR Society that will open for them.and as a true kpop fan and jonas brothers fan., it just doesn’t fit to me. and wondergirls will probably receive some major backlash from the uber exuberant fangirls of the jobros.

lawlietta's avatar

Also, regarding the whole ‘past artists are too quick to collab & incoming Asians must retain some of their own uniqueness’ - I’m so glad JYP is really examining other incoming artists & learning from them.

@5: i dont really think asian singers dont have a bright future in america… i mean… look at boA…. and rain…...  =]

Good job, Wondergirls and JYP! Even if they don’t make it, I’ll still be proud of them for giving it their all.

Considering what the rep said, it looks like the rumor about JB producing for WG was false.

“Formerly, Asian singers would rush to do collaborations with musicians in that country when they enter that market. But that’s a grave mistake.”

He got it right! K-pop on a pop tour with US pop just being themselves, being fresh and different. I hope they hit it really big.

Good luck WG, hope Sohee doesn’t ruin it for them. From the interview awhile ago, all of their english improved a lot except for Sohee. Hers is still bad, just like her singing.

Im happy for them but i still don’t know what to think.
Their rushing everything. I don’t care if it’s the jonas brothers. their being rushed. All these artists are being rushed into something they aren’t completely ready for.
BoA’s with CAA too. so I don’t see how this is a huge deal.

pat.chunggg's avatar

i really wanna hear an english version to nobody. think it would be neat.

@27 ditto totally agree about sohee. Get ready for some harsh criticisms from americans of she doesn’t improve fast in singing.

juliannnnn's avatar

its going to be an interesting route for them.  As JYP stated most asian artists attach themselves to a big name in the American music scene to become big themselves.  It’ll be interesting to see how the wonder girls will fair just to make it on their own.  Even though the Jonas Brothers are attached to the wonder girls, they are not part of their songs.  JYPE has done all of this on their own.  i hope the wonder girls make the American market and not be bashed by the zealots of the music industry.

PS i wonder if jonas fans are scary like Cassies and ELFs, lol

no avatar

that line by JYP seems like a jab at Se7en and the way he entered. JYP is cool and all, but that’s really a bogus thing to say.

no avatar

So it’s okay to leech off an already existing American group’s popularity to launch a career for a group of lackluster talents but it’s not okay to work with American pop producers? And since when were the Wonder Girls a fresh unique sound?

no avatar

i love the way he just dissed BoA, Se7en, and Rain… oh~ giggles~ xD

Good luck to ‘em all.

no avatar

as asian, they should be fully supportive of every asian singers that are trying to make in America, not bring them down
good luck and i will support WG all the way lol
also, other asian singers as well smile

ambot,..'s avatar

i don’t really know why JYP is so confident in debuting WG in the US,.. maybe bcause of the catchy song?,.. he said that they have to stand their own ground but they didn’t even establish that much in Asia where they should begin first,.. you know~ having their support first bfore getting the attention of the Asians who are living in the states,..

I’m really curious as to how the english versions will sound. I honestly think though, that “So Hot” would do better in America than Tell Me. Nobody is a tossup, very campy, but maybe the whole retro thing will work out.

Ayane's avatar

@40 - I agree, So Hot would be a way better choice. I think people here would much prefer it to Tell Me or even Nobody. I like all those songs, but I don’t think others would. Other songs by them, that I think would do well is This Fool (Eebabo) and Irony. @27 - When Sohee isn’t singing with her “cute” voice she’s a pretty good singer. Ever here her sing Eebabo? She actually has a Medium/Deep singing voice. However, ‘cause of how she looks, they make her sing high and her voice cracks. ]:

now0anon's avatar

yuck they’re going to bring over ‘tell me’ also? I’m still not sure why that song was a hit in Korea, I hated it. And I don’t know what exactly “unique” flavor the WG offer other than what…being Asian and doing their own songs brought over from Korea? Well more power to them, maybe they can pull in the love of all the tweens who have yet to get jaded with prejudices yet. Just imagine what Disney will do if it gets its grubby hands on them…

Pop's avatar

I’m imaging what people are going to say, “WTF. Asians?!” D: Lol, I hope they don’t get booed off the stage. Tell Me sounds like shit.. it’s sounds like it could be used for Nickelodeon or Disney. Nobody..? Hmm.. I want to see how people will react. JYP needs to stop being so cocky. Does he not know what is catchy in Korea and in America. It will be a failure if nothing happens.

sparkpandy's avatar

ugh jonas brothers.
well, even if they don’t make it after joining them on tour ~ they might gain some new fans. :]
