The appeal of Korean Stars to different age groups in Japan

The phenomenon known as Hallyu (Korean Wave) was first coined by the Chinese back around 2000 as Korean culture and goods started rapidly spreading through Asia. It hit full bloom in Japan around 2003 when BoA was making music there and Winter Sonata aired for the first time, launching Bae Yong Joon (Yonsama) into super stardom. With the success of TVXQ/DBSK in Japan, Sportsseoul.com and Daum recently had an article up talking up the different Korean stars in Japan and which age group favors them.

In the age bracket of teens - early 30's, most people like Korean musicians but don't really know much about the actors / actresses in dramas. A Japanese High School shared her world with the Sportsseoul journalist and stated that they don't know anything about the Korean dramas but they listen to Korean music. The singers that are appealing to this age bracket are TVXQ, BoA, SS501, and FT Island. All these artists have released albums in Japan and had many activities there. Big Bang recently started their foray into Japan and is slowly getting more and more recognition. Mr. Yuki, a local Japanese journalist stated that TVXQ's popularity is on par with Johnny's Idol Groups. He thinks the reason for this is because TVXQ's looks, music, and style is very well matched to the Japanese tastes. Because of this, their popularity in Japan is no surprise.

In the age bracket of late 30's +, there are some that like Korean music (mainly TVXQ) but this age bracket is mostly concentrated on the dramas. They're big fans of Bae Yong Joon, Song Seung Hun, Kwon Sang Woo, and Lee Byung Hun. These older women were mostly attracted by the looks of the actors and their kindness / warmness / friendliness in the dramas.

I thought this dichotomy of young and old was interesting. Thanks to Junsulv@OneTVXQ Forums for sharing and also check out the OneTVXQ Forums.

@4 it obviously means snsd and 2ne1 dont appeal to the japanese crowd.
maybe if they promoted there they might. japanese arent like other international fans.
they dont care unless the artist is actually in their country actively promoting. then they get interested.

Of course BoA and DBSK is famous in Japan…how many years are they promoting their music in Japan already, especially BoA. She has never once released a Korean song since “Girls On Top” if i am not wrong.

Main reason cause she can earn more in the Japanese market as well, but that’s another thing aside from this article though =/

goldenGAZE's avatar

^Lol when i first got into kpop (2007 ish) i had already heard of BoA but i really thought she was Japanese, i was shocked when i found out she was a korean artist.

Anyways, it’s interesting to see how the younger folks like the music side of things whilst the older peeps are into the dramas.  I’m more of music fan myself with the occasional dramas.

There’s one thing about Japanese people that I like, they judge or like an artist or singer based on overall quality. Besides the endless argument about talent or entertainment in the johnny group, which I find questionable to my standards, the japanese people love an artist not only based on talent or looks alone but quality of music, personality, and character. I find the korean scene tend to lean more towards ‘idol groups’ and that infinite war between who’s better and what not, which i find amusing. But the fact that BoA and DBSK broke those ‘idol’ standards, is impressive. I also think they have improved a lot more in japan, and are more well respected. There has been a LOT of artist not only in Japan but Korea who praises them like crazy. I wished korean audience can see that too… but hey, who am i to say.
P.S.——> There’s an article you’re totally missing in this allkpop. the fact that TVXQ just broke the record for the first foreign artist (not only in asia) to obtain number 1 on the oricon concert DVD in over 6 years, since Led Zepellin, even more copies sold than the Beatles. And the first Asian artist since 20 years. Their digital single also made number 1 on cyber charts, as well as yunho’s checkmate and junsu’s xiahtic. Then there’s DOUBLE J-YC’s number 1 too….

@29: well said~

young girls especially the high school students`re really into Tohoshinki these days.you probably would never ever see teenagers linger around the k-music section at those music stores like tower records etc before,but now there`re like tons of young fangirls fall head over heels right and left here in japan for Tohoshinki now.of course same goes to those obaachan and ojiichan too~*^^*

It took me awhile to get into the scene but with the internet nowadays, it’s a lot easier.
