SNSD Controversies: Not Fighting, No Plagiarism

SNSD: Fighting? Plagarism? Wrong.

Another day, another SNSD controversy. Only this time, netizens have presented us with a double dose of issues relating to SM's female nonagon. And, just like the Yoona-Tiffany-underoo hullabaloo, initial tabloid-fodder has given way to reasonable explanations.

First, we have the Jessica-Seohyun Music Core incident. While performing "Etude" on MBC Music Core on June 27th, Jessica appeared to blow up at Seohyun for getting in her way, shoving Seohyun while spewing out "juh gee rah, ss**** (go away, f*****!).

Netizens pounced on the apparent discord within the So Nyuhs, but the whole thing was just a prank. Koreans have this common birthday prank in which they act like megajerks towards the birthday boy/girl, only to unveil a surprise party and laugh off all of the pretend hate. As Seohyun's birthday was on June 28th, Jessica was simply enacting that fake hate. Considering how much netizens overreact to these kinds of things, however, it probably wasn't the best idea to publicly carry out that prank during a live performance.
______________________________________________

The second controversy is over ownership of SNSD's new single, "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)". Netizens dug up a song by Uzbekistani pop singer Dineyra released a few months ago that sounds very similar to SNSD's song.

Due to SM Entertainment's past remake issues, many people were quick to assume that the company had simply bought another already-released song. But, news reports are stating that the song is supposed to be SM's and SM's only. They officially purchased the music from Universal Music Publishing Group on February 1st, 2009, with the song's lyrics and K-pop-ification done by SM-hired Yoo Young Jin and Yoo Han Jin. Universal Music Publishing Group has stated that they believe their song's demo tape was leaked, and is considering legal action against the producers of Dineyra's song.

But regardless of what happens between UMPG and the Uzibekistani entertainment world, the important thing for us K-pop fans is that SM and SNSD are free of any guilt on this particular issue, and that we can listen to "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)" without any controversies lingering in the back of our minds.

Uzbekistan?????????????? I didn’t even know that country really existed! lol.

~Loco_Roco~'s avatar

IMO, SM shouldn’t take any action since the song of the other group came out first anyway. Demos don’t leak that easily. How many issues like this has SM had?! I can’t even feel bad anymore. The Jessica + Seo Hyun thing is clearly a misunderstanding though. Crazy netizens XD But…she should have done the prank backstage (if it was even a prank at all lol).

Pop's avatar

whoa.. way to be original, SM.

I really find it funny when people react negatively when it comes to SNSD’s controversies but never do when it comes to other groups. There are so many biased comments around here. Anyway, I still love SNSD.

I wonder if people ACTUALLY read the article. THE SONG WAS ONLY GIVEN TO SM and not to that other woman. LOL.

whatever. bad publicity is still publicity.

Seriously do some of you even read the article or just jump straight to the video? If the song was not leaked before SNSD version came out it’d not be called “un-original” right? SM probably hasn’t even heard of the Dineyra version. How is it un-original then? Genie is not even a remake of Dineyra version.

I think the problem isn’t if they have copyright issues or not. I think the problem is that they make it seem like they are great artist because they make they’re songs which they don’t. I’m glad atleast someone like JYP is in the k-pop industry. I have great respect for him.

i think the Uzbekistan version is WAY BETTER….even the choreography. another point, WE ONLY HEARD ONE SIDE OF THE STORY from UMPG. WE SHOULDN’T MAKE ANY CONCLUSIONS YET, what if the other camp claims otherwise? IT’S NOT FAIR NOT TO HEAR THE OTHER SIDE FIRST.

The song is really similar though!

azalea's avatar

the singer Dineyra has a better version for me (song & choreography). and her voice is better than the 9 nine girls combined LOL but the problem is that her song is plagiarized.

no avatar

wow that songs sounds like exactly the same - ishh

Literati Tempo's avatar

It sounds the same. Maybe they were both sold the rights. Whatever I though they said something about copyrights getting lax now. The songs are the same, SNSD is a full fledged uber successful group who the bak are they giving Demo tapes out too?

Tvxq4everLove's avatar

From Universal Music Europe:

‘We own this song. Dsign are Universal writers. Girls’ Generation / SM were given this song exclusively to record and release.

The Uzbekistan release is an unauthorized, and unlawful version and not approved by us. GG/SM are at no fault at all. A press message will be sent out shortly. ‘

THE SONG WAS GIVEN TO SM EXCLUSIVELY. THE UXBEKISTAN RELEASE IS AN UNAUTHORIZED AND UNLAWFUL VERSION AND NOT APPROVED BY UNIVERSAL MUSIC EUROPE.
So the one copying is this Dineyra’s company.
SNSD FIGHTING!!!!!!!

The song issue could happen to anyone; there are so many songs in the world, some are bound to sound alike. But whether it was a prank or not, the first thing I realized was, “She did this SeoHyun DURING the Etude performance?” I saw that little shove when I watched that same video, so I knew something was going on. Doing that on stage (intentional or not) wasn’t very professional, was it, ‘Sica’?

no avatar

Holy crap, that’s such a legit copy. You don’t even have to re-listen to it a bunch of times, you can tell it’s the exact same once you listen to the Uzbekistan version. Stupid SM, poor SNSD. :/

sm in music business almost like retail business….. buying things and sell again…..in different package. does not sound so nice, but made lots of money.

THE UZBEKISTANS HAS NOT RELEASED THEIR SIDE OF THE STORY YET SO WE SHOULDN’T MAKE ANY CONCLUSIONS, BELIEVING STATEMENTS GIVEN BY ONE SIDE ALONE IN THIS CASE UNIVERSAL MUSIC IS NOT JUST RIGHT. Even if SME may have the rights to the song BUT DINEYRA RELEASED HER VERSION MONTHS BEFORE SNSD DID. AND NOT TO MENTION THAT THE UZBEKISTANI VERION IS WAY BETTER.

lmao. dey deff sound the same. dayumm.

i wonder how netizens do this.

like men its from Uzbekistan!?

how the hell did they found that song?

crazy.

no avatar

Lol… I didn’t even know Uzbekistan had a music industry. What a surprise. Also, the Jessi-bitch thing is obviously a prank. The timing is just too coincidental, and it’s very unexpected. But funny nonetheless. Jessica can swear!

no avatar

it’s just the same,, the whole song.. only lyrics.. is total different..
so erhmm.. unoriginal.. xD
but anyway.. I don’t care xP
don’t really like the song anywayy.. lol

i wonder how netizens even found a Uzbekistani song. Do they even knoe where it is? It’s not like it’s got anything remotely close to Korean. Poor SNSD, 3 controversies in like 1 week ._.

I am amazed at the amount stupid kids commenting in this article, you should learn to read or stop being ignorant and actually READ the article. SM did not COPY anyone. SM bought the song off UMPG and was modified by some people and was given to SNSD. WAY before SNSD’s comeback their demo was LEAKED and was plagiarized by Dineyra’s company. And don’t forget to read the last paragraph.

no avatar

haha that’s an odd thing to do on sum1’s bday. though i find it funny to see that from jessica. o god i hope they didn’t copy that song

mjyee's avatar

snsd fighting!
since sm has the rights to the song and lyrics they are not at fault
but it looks bad on the girls because dineyra released the song “first”
too bad snsd’s song is better smile

witch's avatar

jeez….a prank? i so do not believe.jessica’s expression should be laughing or something not full of hate…end snsd’s genie sound way better!!
