Queen Seon Duk

MBC's big budget sageuk Queen Seon Duk will finally be making it's way onto tv screens on 25th May. The highly anticipated Queen Seon Duk is the final of 3 sageuks this year that centers around a female heroine. The other 2, KBS2TV The Iron Empress and SBS Ja Myung Go have both met with lukewarm responses in Korea (although I am watching and liking them both) with ratings not reaching up to expectations, the earlier suffering from historical inaccuracies and the latter being a fusion between sageuk and fantasy. Although one can attribute it to a waning interest in sageuk dramas in recent times, there are signs that Queen Seon Duk might just buck the trend.

The 50 episode sageuk drama is about the lifestory of Princess Duk Man who later becomes Queen Seon Duk (Lee Yo Won), the first Queen of Silla. Her life sees Silla engaged in numerous conflicts in the turbulent era of the Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla) while internally, she has to contend against her biggest political rival and the 2nd most powerful female in the court, Mi Shil (Go Hyun Jung). Park Ye Jin and Uhm Tae Woong also play important roles in the drama, the earlier gives birth to Kim Chun Chu (Yoo Seung Ho) who becomes the 29th king of Silla while the latter is famed Silla general Kim Yoo Shin. Park Jung Chul, Kim Nam Gil, veterans Jo Min Ki, Lee Moon Shik, Lee Soon Jae, Shin Goo, etc are also in the drama who adds to the star factor.

The cast of Queen Seon Duk

Factors that might see Queen Seon Duk become a success.

1. It's taking over the timeslot vacated by popular and current top-rated drama Queen of Housewives. Unsuspecting viewers will just spill over.

2. The impressive cast. You can always count on the veterans to deliver.

3. A fresh focus and look at Silla history.

4. Weak competition from SBS Ja Myung Go, KBS2TV The Slingshot/Story of a Man (follow-up is The Man Who Can't Get Married)

And Queen Seon Duk's entry will mean that we have 2 sageuk dramas competing directly against each other on Monday and Tuesday nights. Now, won't it be interesting if KBS moves The Iron Empress to the same timeslot. But then again, it would just be overdoing it and wishful thinking. Here's a Queen Seon Duk 6 minute preview.

The two leading ladies look really alike especially in the photo where it’s only them. The bottom of their faces look so similar. They’re clothes are pretty, what time is this set in? (Sorry I know nil of Korean history)

I love the costume. Very beautiful.

Sorry this is really random but in the photos with lots of people in it, there’s a guy with a chinese Qing dynasty manchu haircut/ plait at the very bottom?  Is he chinese or is he Korean but dressed as a chinese? (he looks kinda familiar) Anyways, I like their costumes.

I don’t mean to be overly critical of these historical dramas, but…. is she wearing a western style crown in some of those photos? A little ridiculous, no?

@ what, # 14:
it would be better in the future if you did some research of Korean history before you “risk being overly critical of these historical dramas”.  the crown she is wearing is not “western” in any way. It looks almost exactly like a crown excavated from a Shilla tomb (5-6th centuries) except that one had more jade pieces hanging off of it and more dangles on the bottom.

No it is not a western style crown. It is an actual Silla crown found in her grave I believe, it’s one of the national treasures and I have a miniature of it. It’s actually way more elaborate than a western one and is made up of very small parts and jade pieces that move when you move. It’s also made of very thin gold and the real thing is a marvel.

Ugh, I sound like such a patriot. but I love seon duk, she’s one of my favorite monarchs throughout history. You know, I have this theory that the Women queen dramas are not doing well because Koreans don’t like to see women in power. just a theory. I may be proved wrong with this one.

I was really referring to the one she’s wearing on the last picture, not that more elaborate golden one, which I am familiar with myself. That said, after some research I am starting to believe that the costumes she’s wearing are not the traditional court clothing either. Oh well, so much for something supposedly portraying at least 50% accurate real history.

Nice cast! This series looks good!
I am currently loving Princess Ja Myung Go! Really great series!

juhaynee's avatar

I was hoping for better ratings of Ja myung Go cause the cast is great and the plot is okay too…though i dont like the fantasy bit of it.

I wish Park Ye Jin had a bigger role, but I guess this is good enough.

This looks really good! Lady Yejin I bet will be wonderful! And Park Soojin of Sugar is there, too? interesting.

lol omg for the first time in a longgg time - im actually looking forward to a saeguk. all the other saeguks this year did not live up to expectations.

Yaaaay!  Duuude, I love Lee Yo Won!!  Her past characters are a little annoying because they’re all cry babies (Fashion 70s, Bad Love), but I can’t help but love her!  smile  And I literally think Park Ye Jin is only good in saeguk dramas…now don’t hate, I really really love PYJ but I honestly tried so hard to like Hateful But Once Again and it’s not working.  Her acting did not do it for me.  And awww, I thought Princess Ja Myung Go would get better ratings, too.  I really like that drama.  smile  The child actors are the bomb!

p-p-p-props to the costume dept and to the art direction crew.  love the rich embroidery and the detail-heavy headpieces.  and the kick-ass throne.  but will i actually watch a period drama?  will depend on how bad the miniseries are.
