Shine’s Kelly Attempts Suicide

Shines Kelly Attempts Suicide

Reports have surfaced that Kelly, leader of the relatively unknown female electronic band, Shine, attempted suicide in the early morning hours yesterday.

She took a reported 40 sleeping pills but was luckily found quickly enough to survive. The reasons could have been many but her company said that due to her responsibilities as a leader it was tiring for her. Shine is currently under going member changes and preparing to go overseas to perform.

Although her company officials said it wasn't a Werther effect attempt at a suicide, you have to know, that it most likely was. In the past year, we've had celebrity figures such as a late president or a famous TV celebrity commit suicide. Studies have shown that people that are on the edge are more inclined to commit suicide when a famous person does, hence the Werther effect.

It's sad that these celebrities are going through a tough time and I'm no psychologist, but I will be the first to call them out on their cowardice and irresponsibility. Now of course, there are many factors leading up to a decision to commit suicide and every case is different but come on! These people need to know that there are many people that look up to them as role models. There are many things fracked up in this world that leads a person to the brink, but don't succumb. Celebrities, I beg you, listen to my plea! There are many that look up to you and many fans that love and adore you, so take courage and be strong, for tomorrow WILL be a better day! Here's hoping for brighter days for Shine's Kelly, let good things shine upon you.

koreans tend to think so weak when it comes to having troubles in life. they seem to think the best way to solve it is to “off” themselves. that’s cowardly.
i no longer feel sorry for these suicidal weaklings.

If she can’t bear to be the leader, then do something else.
Get out from that crappy entertainment industry before it’s too late. Go get yourself a degree or something.
Idiot.

That’s the thing about Korean people. They think everything’s a trend.

I don’t think scolding these people is the right thing to do, you’re also speaking ill of the dead. I would image that you’ve never been depressed. It doesn’t matter how rich or famous you are, when you are depressed nothing matters. Especially since depression is often a chemical imbalance that cannot be correctly through therapy and definitely not through will alone. I wish more people recognized metal illness as a real illness but I know many people still think you can just positively think your way out of depression. I think what most likely attributes to all these suicides is the attitude that depression is not a disease, which makes people ashamed to get help when they really need it. And @ 3, that’s awful and you sound racist.

like serously, wtf. I’m mean, not to be harsh, suicide is a serious thing, but gosh. Really?...really. not over every little thing you kill ureself over. but i dont know about her. i dont want to make assumptions. Its sad that some people have to resort to that.
thats how it looks to me…

@ 8 you’re an idiot. so you think what i said is racists? so what if i made a comment like “koreans are the best dancers” ~ would that make me a supremist? no.  i can’ t help but notice the suicide frequency in korean culture, that is why i mention koreans. so you expect everyone to feel sorry for those people who hates their life and think they can’t go on therefore kill themselves.  that’s fine by you, but i don’t have to like it.

The rate of suicides in Korea in 2006 was 21.9 per 100,000 people. It’s just that in the past year some celebrities have done so that you think it’s high.

All those suicides. when will it end? What a lot of people don’t realize is that death solves nothing. A lot of souls are not at peace. Suicide only turns a temporary situation (debt, heartbreak, blame, etc…) that could probably be solved eventually and into a permanent one (that person’s soul ends up haunting that location while forever looking for peace in the afterlife). I think most people have been depressed at some point in their lives, including me but we all fight our way through it. Choosing suicide is a very selfish thing to do. What about the friends and family left behind? They’re scarred for life now.

tablo once said that suicide can be seen as a way of survival
if u think abou tit really deeply, he does make sense

its sad whenever ppl want to die T.T

loraborax3's avatar

i agree it doesn’t solve anything. they’re just trying to run away from the problem. i hate that the public is calling it a “trend”. I feel this is due to lack of awareness about how society has a huge impact on the person and their needs. especially by the way netizens are intolerable and the society are run by conformity and lack of social change.

Frankly I dont see what’s the hoo-haa is all about? If she wants to commit suicide just let her be. She or rather I think if everybody has the right to live, then everybody have the right to die. Is saving her a good thing? It’s just violating her rights because she have already made her choice. I dont think its selfish at all. Making one live against their wishes now thats selfish.

what is with every damn cleleb commiting suicide?! they may think that tehir life is too bad but they must think to themselves that there are ppl whose lives are wayy worse and probably derive their motivation from the good music and the determination of their favourite musician.. i know i always find myself happier after i listen to DBSK.. and watching them fight on for their dream and for what they believe definitely makes me more determined.. i agree with the writer.. after becoming a celebrity, their are hundreds of people who want to be like you, love you and idolize you. you become their EVERYTHING.. and they have a huge amout of responsibilities on themselves—esp. “idol” groups —as the fans are more than likely to copy them, what if this starts a chain of events.. what then?? I hate to be pressurizing but the celebs DO possess an enormous amount of influence on people and its high time they all realised that.

and if this was a publicity stunt.. GOD! YOU ARE PATHETIC!!!

Depression is an illness you dumbasses.  If they were of actual sound mind to think of the ones who loved them, they wouldn’t be depressed in the first place.

If you keep thinking depression is so simple as not being “selfish or cowardly,” then chances are you’ll be as unprepared as those victims in the same situation.

Understand how to help these people, and you’ll probably end up avoiding their plight in doing so.  Or you could just be a jackass who’ll be just as vulnerable due to your ignorance and apathy.

Suicide is such a touchy topic ~
Anyways, I just hope she gets the help she needs and wish her the best.

Ah, I remember, during the Epik High concert, Tablo was talking about how,
in Korea, its looked down upon to “get help”

As soon as you see or even mention a psychiatrist/therapist, you’re labeled as a nutcase.

So, honestly, Korean society should open their eyes and get a clue,
Just because you hold it in, and tell everyone else you’re fine, doesn’t mean you’re gonna be okay.

I hope in the future people will seek help BEFORE they try stupid things like suicide,

Kelly ... Fighting!!

xihn's avatar

@21 the problem is, suicide often leaves other people connected to the suicide-er in trouble/grief/etc.
ex. say a man couldn’t pay back some debts and committed suicide, leaving his wife and kids behind to suffer
that is so selfish and so uncalled for
i don’t think there are many people in the world who could kill themselves and not deeply affect someone else in some way

in Kelly’s case, she’s hurts the people she is a role model for, her family, friends, her group members + company, and who knows what else

i hope kelly starts feeling better and realizing that killing herself doesn’t solve her own problems and causes more problems for others

Riiiight. Because every suicidal person wants to hear “you’re selfish and irresponsible” when they’re depressed enough as it is - really, that just makes the desperation to die all the more powerful. The slightly optimistic tone towards the end of the article is drowned out by the sheer ignorance that dominates the rest of the post. I guess a person is hard pressed to find any empathy in the world.

Regardless, I hope she recovers and manages to find some joy again. Surviving a suicide attempt might be the opportunity she needs to reevaluate her life.

From reading this article and comments, clearly people don’t know anything about psychology, depression, and suicide. If you don’t know then you should just wish your condolences or just stay silent and keep those comments judging these people to yourselves. I’d hate to think that any of allkpop’s readers are depressed or have thought of suicide or have lost friends/family to suicide and came here and read all these awful comments.

Bob DaBuilda?!'s avatar

Ok these suicides are getting ridiculous. I know I should be saying “Oh I feel so bad, I have sympathy blah blah blah”, but I don’t anymore. Depression or not, get some frickin’ help, who cares what Koreans think? Get help in secret or something.

And really, attempted suicide over leadership roles? Not getting acting roles? Come on, this is stupid. There are people who live much harder lives, who pick themselves up every day and survive. It must be values they learn in society or something.

CORRECT: They are cowards and irresponsible. I know it might sound cold, but jeez don’t they realize they leave their families and friends to suffer for THEIR mistakes. They are so selfish to take their lives and believe it’s all over. There are people in the world that hope to live one more day and these idiotic people take their lives like it’s worth nothing.

this is very sad. ):
it’s like.. GEES. every week on allkpop, another artist has taken their own life.
thank the Lord she survived. i don’t understand how they can feel SO BAD as to follow such a thing as suicide.
it’s selfish and you’re right~ so many people, YOUNG PEOPLE TOO, look up to them and adore them and love them, even if they don’t know them on such a personal level, it just doesn’t matter.
may brighter days keep her strong. <3

Just want to add to what some other people have already said: Depression is NOT the same as feeling sad, stressed or frustrated. It’s NOT the same as having a crappy day at work or school. And it usually can’t be solved (easily, at least) through talking or even therapy.

Most depressed people are already aware of how selfish they’re being. And guess what? That just makes it worse. They know they’re being difficult for their friends and family, but they can’t help it. Honestly, so many people say things like “There are so many others out there who have it way worse,” but that’s not the point. Those people don’t have depression. They have strong, healthy minds and are able to fight on and get on with their lives. People with depression don’t have this ability.

That’s right, you’re not a psychologist- because what you said was narrow and insensitive, we don’t know what was going on in her head. What right do you have to judge. If we are to blame, blame the korean government and their lack of suicide prevention schemes. and ill addressing towards depression awareness, or their education programs where teachers are still abusive towards students, and society where people strive for unachieveable perfection.  Korea has the 8th heighest rate of suicide because there are too many people who think like you- lecturing them to suck it up and get over it without considering the need for help and preventions in the first place.

I’ve gone through depression before, and if someone like you said what you said up there to me, it would have driven me to suicide even more. You’ve just added further pressure what with extra responsabilities then slamming them for cowardice and irriesponsibility. People choice this path to escape the pressure and mental pain they are going though- great advice. NOT.

Tablo [from Epik High] even spoke out about it during the NY concert
about fear of visiting a shrink cause then you are automatically labeled as a crazy person so people don’t speak out about their fears or depression… they bottle it all inside. Tablo spoke the truth. Yes, they are cowards, irresponsible, and should think about their family & friends, but when you are in a depressive state. those things truly don’t come to mind except all the negativity; symbolically like a black cloud floating above… i’ve been through really tough times and death sounds like a great option cause you escape from your own troubles. you don’t have to live in anguish or pain… i truly hope she can fight thru her problems and be strong once again~

no avatar

“cowardness and irresponsibility”? that’s a very ignorant thing to say. it’s definitely not the way to approach or tackle depression.

honestly i think you’re being the irresponsible one… depression is a really debilitating illness.

go take a psychology paper asap.
